Today, Bold Minds Africa joins the global community in observing World Su***de Prevention Day.

This year’s theme, “Changing the Narrative on Su***de,” calls on all of us to start the conversation with empathy, honesty, and hope.

Su***de prevention begins when we replace silence with safe conversations, stigma with understanding, and judgment with support. Asking someone how they are and creating space to listen can help them feel seen, supported, and less alone in their experience.

As an organization, we believe that seeking help is a sign of courage, lived experience matters, and no one should face emotional distress alone.

👉 Start the conversation
Today, check in with someone you care about. Listen without judgment, avoid rushing to fix their feelings, and stay connected. When needed, support them in reaching out to a trusted person or qualified mental-health professional.

💬 Your lived experience can bring hope.
Share a message of encouragement, something that helped you through a difficult season, or a reminder you believe someone experiencing emotional distress needs to hear today.

If you are experiencing thoughts of su***de or feel unsafe, please tell someone you trust and seek urgent support from a qualified mental-health professional or the nearest health facility. Support is available, and reaching out can be the first step towards hope and healing.

“Mental health…is not a destination, but a process. It’s about how you drive, not where you’re going.” ~ Noam Shpancer, PhD

This week’s reflection: Mental health isn’t about reaching a perfect state; it’s about how you show up for yourself every day along the way. In Su***de Prevention and Awareness Month, we remember that every small step towards healing and connection matters.

💚 Bold Minds Africa reminds you that progress isn’t a finish line, it’s the daily choices you make. Your life matters, your story matters, and you are not alone.

What’s ONE small choice you made this week that honored your journey, not just the destination?

September is Su***de Prevention and Awareness Month 🧠💚

At Bold Minds Africa, we are using data and stories to change the narrative on su***de; because behind every statistic is a person, a family, and a community.

This month, we’re joining the global movement to change the narrative on su***de:

✅ From silence to open, honest conversations
✅ From stigma to compassion and support
✅ From shame to hope, help, and healing

The numbers tell part of the story:
🔸 Globally, more than 720,000 people die by su***de every year.
🔸 Su***de is the 3rd leading cause of death among 15 - 29‑year‑olds worldwide.
🔸 In Kenya, reported su***de cases rose from 1,157 in 2018 to 1,596 in 2021, and recent analyses suggest an average of about 5 deaths per day in some periods.
🔸 Among young people in Kenya, about 1 in 5 report lifetime suicidal thoughts, and over 1 in 20 report a lifetime su***de attempt.

These are not just numbers. They are friends, classmates, colleagues, and loved ones.

This month, we move from data to action

💬 Your lived experience matters.
If you’ve struggled with suicidal thoughts, supported someone who did, or walked through deep emotional pain; your story can help others feel less alone and more willing to seek help.

👉 Share one sentence about your journey, what helped you, or a message of hope you wish you’d heard. You don’t have to share details; just what feels safe for you.

If you’re in crisis right now, please reach out to a trusted person or a local helpline. You matter. Your life matters. 💚
