THE BEAUTY OF TRADITIONAL OHANGLA MUSIC AND THE ORUTU CONNECTION

INTRODUCTION
Ohangla music is more than just sound. It is culture, identity, and rhythm deeply rooted in the Luo community of Kenya. From village ceremonies to modern stages, Ohangla continues to carry stories, emotions, and traditions across generations.

WHAT IS OHANGLA
Ohangla is a traditional Luo music style built around powerful drums, energetic dancing, and call-and-response singing. It is commonly performed during weddings, funerals, and social gatherings. The rhythm is fast, engaging, and meant to bring people together.

THE POWER OF THE DRUMS
At the heart of Ohangla lies a rich drum ensemble. Multiple drums are played together to create layered rhythms that drive the music. These beats are not just for listening; they are meant to be felt, danced to, and experienced.

THE ORUTU INSTRUMENT
The Orutu is a one-stringed traditional fiddle played using a bow. Its sound is unique, emotional, and almost human-like. It is often used to tell stories, express feelings, and lead melodies within traditional Luo music.

THE OHANGLA AND ORUTU COMBINATION
When Ohangla drums combine with the Orutu, something special happens.

The drums provide energy, rhythm, and movement.
The Orutu adds melody, emotion, and storytelling.

This fusion creates a powerful musical experience that is both lively and deeply expressive. It allows listeners not only to dance but also to connect with the message behind the music.

A MOMENT FROM THE GROUND
In the video below, Jarachar is seen enjoying Ohangla music at a local performance. Juogi has peacefully descended in him, making him dance rhythmically to the beats. The moment captures the deep cultural connection between music, spirit, and expression within the Luo tradition.

CULTURAL IMPORTANCE
This combination preserves Luo heritage and keeps traditional music alive. It reflects community life, social values, and shared experiences. Even today, modern Ohangla artists continue to use these elements, blending tradition with contemporary sounds.

CONCLUSION
Ohangla and Orutu together represent the perfect balance of rhythm and soul. One makes you move, the other makes you feel. Together, they tell the story of a people, their culture, and their identity.

𝗔 𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗙𝗔𝗖𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗙𝗥𝗔𝗨𝗗 𝗜𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗚𝗢𝗟𝗗 𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗗𝗘

In a shocking and increasingly widespread scheme across Kenya, gold scammers have devised a deceptive method involving ordinary household water taps. Criminals are reportedly grinding brass water taps into fine powder and falsely presenting it as gold dust to unsuspecting foreign buyers. This elaborate scam is not only defrauding investors but also fueling a new wave of theft in residential areas.

The fraud exploits the visual similarity between powdered brass and raw gold particles. To an untrained eye, the fine glittering residue can easily pass as unrefined gold, making it an effective tool for deception in illegal trade circles.

𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗖𝗔𝗠 𝗢𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗦

The process begins with the collection of brass materials mainly water taps, valves, and plumbing fittings. These items are then mechanically ground into powder. Scammers package the powder and market it as authentic gold dust, often accompanied by fabricated documents and staged demonstrations to convince buyers.

Foreign investors, especially those unfamiliar with gold verification processes, become prime targets. Many are lured by promises of high returns and discounted gold deals, only to later discover they have been sold worthless material.

𝗦𝗨𝗥𝗚𝗘 𝗜𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗙𝗧 𝗢𝗙 𝗪𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗧𝗔𝗣𝗦 𝗔𝗖𝗥𝗢𝗦𝗦 𝗞𝗘𝗡𝗬𝗔𝗡 𝗛𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗦

As demand for brass materials rises among fraudsters, homeowners across Kenya are now facing a troubling side effect: the theft of water taps and plumbing fixtures. Estates in urban and peri-urban areas have reported increasing cases of stolen taps, leaving homes exposed and water systems damaged.

In many cases, residents wake up to find outdoor taps missing overnight. This not only leads to replacement costs but also water wastage and inconvenience, especially in areas already facing water shortages.

𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗔𝗖𝗧 𝗢𝗡 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗠𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗘𝗦 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗦𝗘𝗖𝗨𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗬

This emerging crime trend is increasing insecurity in neighborhoods and putting pressure on residents to take extra precautions. The theft of such small but essential items reflects a broader problem of opportunistic crime driven by fraudulent markets.

At the same time, the scam damages the reputation of legitimate gold trade within Kenya, making it harder for genuine businesses to operate with trust.

𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗛𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗢𝗪𝗡𝗘𝗥𝗦 𝗜𝗡 𝗞𝗘𝗡𝗬𝗔

Homeowners can take practical steps to protect their property and reduce the risk of theft:

Install lockable tap covers or protective metal cages around outdoor taps to make removal difficult
Replace exposed brass taps with plastic or less attractive alternatives where possible
Ensure outdoor areas are well lit, especially at night, to deter thieves
Install motion sensor lights or simple CCTV cameras which are now widely available in Kenya
Engage community policing initiatives such as Nyumba Kumi to share information and monitor suspicious activity
Turn off and secure external water lines when not in use, especially at night or when away from home
Mark or engrave fixtures to make resale more difficult and discourage theft

𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗔𝗨𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗘𝗦 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗠𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗘𝗦 𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗 𝗗𝗢

Report all theft incidents to local police stations promptly to help track patterns
Local leaders and residents associations should raise awareness about the scam and theft trend
Authorities should regulate scrap metal and brass trade more strictly to limit illegal supply chains
Public education campaigns can help both residents and potential investors avoid falling victim to fraud

𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗖𝗟𝗨𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗔 𝗚𝗥𝗢𝗪𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗗𝗘𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗦 𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡

What may seem like a small household item has now become part of a larger network of fraud and theft. The misuse of water taps in gold scams is a clear example of how criminal innovation can impact everyday life.

For Kenya, addressing this issue requires vigilance from homeowners, cooperation within communities, and stronger enforcement from authorities. With awareness and preventive action, this growing threat can be contained before it spreads further.

REPORT ON FIRE PREVENTION, SCHOOL SECURITY, AND STUDENT SAFETY IN KENYAN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

INTRODUCTION

School fires continue to pose a serious threat to students, staff, and educational infrastructure in Kenya. Loss of lives, destruction of property, disruption of learning, and psychological trauma have resulted from repeated fire incidents in some schools. This report highlights key observations and recommendations aimed at strengthening fire prevention, school security, and student safety.

OBSERVATIONS

INADEQUATE SURVEILLANCE

Many schools lack adequate CCTV coverage. In some institutions, installed cameras are either nonfunctional or do not cover critical areas.

WEAK SECURITY POINTS

Weak perimeter fences, poorly monitored gates, and unsecured access points expose schools to unauthorized entry and criminal activities.

UNSECURED GENERATOR ROOMS

Generator rooms are often poorly protected, creating opportunities for vandalism, sabotage, and unauthorized intrusion.

ELECTRICAL HAZARDS

Poor maintenance of electrical systems has led to exposed wires, hanging cables, faulty switches, damaged sockets, and overloaded circuits, increasing the likelihood of electrical fires.

LIMITED EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

Some schools lack adequate firefighting equipment, clearly marked emergency exits, assembly points, and regular fire drills.

STUDENT UNREST

Certain fire incidents have been associated with student dissatisfaction, poor communication channels, and indiscipline.

RECOMMENDATIONS

INSTALLATION OF CCTV CAMERAS

Schools should install and maintain functional CCTV cameras in corridors, dormitories, classrooms, administration blocks, school gates, generator rooms, every corner of the compound, and all weak points along perimeter fences. The surveillance system should operate continuously and be monitored by authorized personnel.

SAFE EXITS AND ENTRANCES

All entrances and exits should be clearly marked, well lit, secure, and free from obstruction to facilitate safe and rapid evacuation during emergencies.

SECURING GENERATOR ROOMS

Generator rooms should remain locked at all times and be accessible only to authorized personnel. Regular inspections should be conducted to ensure compliance with safety standards.

MAINTENANCE OF ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS

Schools should conduct routine inspections and maintenance of all electrical installations. Exposed wires, hanging cables, faulty switches, damaged sockets, and overloaded circuits should be repaired or replaced immediately.

FIRE PREPAREDNESS

Schools should maintain adequate fire extinguishers, install fire detection systems, conduct regular fire drills, establish assembly points, and train staff and students on emergency response procedures.

STUDENT MORALE BOOSTERS

School administrations should strengthen guidance and counseling services, promote sports and talent development programs, establish student leadership forums, introduce academic mentorship initiatives, and implement reward systems for good conduct and academic excellence. These measures help reduce frustration and improve communication between students and school management.

CONFIDENTIAL INTELLIGENCE GATHERING

Teachers and administrators should establish confidential reporting channels through trusted student informants. The identities of such students should remain permanently protected to encourage reporting of planned misconduct, threats, and acts that may endanger the school community.

DISCIPLINARY AND LEGAL ACTION

Students found responsible for arson, destruction of school property, or actions that endanger lives should face appropriate disciplinary measures and legal consequences in accordance with Kenyan laws, due process requirements, and judicial procedures.

CONCLUSION

Preventing school fires requires a coordinated approach involving effective surveillance systems, secure infrastructure, proper electrical maintenance, emergency preparedness, student welfare initiatives, and timely intelligence gathering. Implementing these recommendations will significantly enhance safety, protect lives, preserve property, and create a secure learning environment in Kenyan secondary schools.

back to Benga:

Did you know that Anguai Jagita never sang any of his songs with his own voice and only appeared a few times in his own music videos? Now you know.
Most people used to confuse Anguai with Aronga. In fact, many believed Aronga Jamakosa was Anguai himself, even assuming that the voice in the songs belonged to Anguai. The reality is that several band members played major roles behind the scenes, which is why there was so much confusion among fans.

Kenyan football fans have expressed outrage after Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Vice President Macdonald Mariga was seen lifting the SPORTPESA trophy before it was officially handed to the tournament winners, sparking widespread debate over football protocol and respect for champions.
The controversial moment unfolded during the post-match trophy presentation ceremony, where players and supporters were eagerly awaiting the crowning moment of the competition. However, attention quickly shifted when Mariga was captured raising the trophy ahead of the victorious team's captain and players.
Videos and photographs of the incident quickly spread across social media, triggering a wave of criticism from football fans who viewed the act as inappropriate and disrespectful to the champions.
Many supporters argued that the trophy should first be presented to the winning team, allowing players to celebrate their achievement before any officials participate in the festivities. Fans maintained that trophy presentations are symbolic moments that belong to the players who have worked tirelessly throughout the tournament.
"This was the players' moment, not the administrators' moment," wrote one fan on social media. Others described the incident as unnecessary and questioned whether proper procedures had been followed during the ceremony.
The backlash has reignited concerns among supporters about the role of football administrators during major celebrations. Critics argued that officials should focus on presenting awards before stepping aside and allowing players and coaching staff to enjoy the spotlight.
However, not everyone shared the same view. Some football followers defended Mariga, suggesting there was no ill intent behind the gesture. They argued that the former Harambee Stars midfielder, who enjoyed a distinguished career in European football, may simply have been caught up in the excitement of the occasion.
Supporters of Mariga further noted that trophy celebrations are often emotional and chaotic, making such incidents possible without any deliberate attempt to overshadow the winning team.
Despite these defenses, the incident has intensified calls for clearer guidelines governing trophy presentation ceremonies in Kenyan football. Several stakeholders believe the Football Kenya Federation should establish and strictly enforce protocols that ensure players remain at the center of championship celebrations.
Sports analysts say the controversy highlights the importance of symbolism in football. While the incident lasted only a few moments, it touched on broader issues of respect, leadership, and the traditions that define the sport.
As discussions continue across the country, the episode has become one of the most talked-about moments in Kenyan football this week. Whether viewed as a harmless mistake or a breach of football etiquette, the incident has reignited debate about how major trophies should be presented and who should take center stage during football's most memorable moments.
For many fans, the answer remains simple: trophies should first be lifted by the champions who earned them on the pitch.
