KILIMANI CITY CROWNED BACK TO SCHOOL CHAMPIONS IN YOUTH PEACE AND EDUCATION INITIATIVE

Kilimani City have been crowned the new champions of the Back to School Tournament, an initiative aimed at promoting peace, education and positive engagement among young people.

The tournament was held under the coordination of Hamis Nassoro, with support from partners including Mwazaro Beach Hotel and Pemba Community Human Rights Centre (PCHRC).

In an exciting final, Kilimani City defeated Golden Arrow 3–2, securing the title in a closely contested match that kept fans on their feet until the final whistle.

Speaking after the match, stakeholders emphasized the importance of using sport as a platform to promote peace, discipline and social cohesion, while encouraging young people to prioritize both formal education and Madrasa education.

The Executive Director of Pemba Community Human Rights Centre called for increased support from development partners, donors and other stakeholders to strengthen youth-focused sports initiatives. He further proposed the establishment of a girls’ football league alongside the boys’ competitions, creating equal opportunities for young women to participate and develop their talents.

PCHRC reaffirmed its commitment to supporting sports as a powerful tool for youth empowerment, crime prevention and drug-abuse prevention. The organization believes that creating safe spaces where young people can play, learn and build their talents can help keep them away from crime, drugs and other harmful activities.

The success of the Back to School Tournament demonstrates the potential of community-led sports initiatives to advance peace, education, youth empowerment and social development.

PCHRC therefore invites donors, development partners, private-sector actors and other stakeholders to invest in and support similar initiatives, particularly those that expand opportunities for girls and vulnerable young people.

Empowering Communities Through Knowledge and Financial Skills

Pemba Community Human Rights Centre (PCHRC), we are committed to building resilient communities by investing in the capacity of youth and women-led groups.

This week, members of Blue Forest Guardian Kichakamkwaju, Shimoni Kwale County participated in a practical one day training on weekly business record keeping, financial management, and monthly reporting. These essential skills will enable the group to improve transparency, monitor business performance, make informed decisions, and strengthen the sustainability of their community enterprises.

The training forms part of PCHRC's broader mission to equip local communities with the knowledge, leadership, and entrepreneurial skills needed to create sustainable livelihoods while promoting environmental conservation along Kenya's coastal region.

By strengthening the capacity of grassroots groups like Blue Forest Guardian, we are helping young people and women become financially independent, improve household incomes, and build stronger, more resilient communities.

Together, we are creating lasting opportunities where communities thrive, local businesses grow, and conservation goes hand in hand with economic empowerment.

Pemba community human rights centre early last week welcome on board!
​We’re beyond thrilled to embark on this journey together as we jump into training focused on creating dignified work opportunities for our youth.

​Last week’s session was all about building real-world entrepreneurship skills. We broke down the fundamentals of Business Modelling from defining value propositions and knowing our customers to setting up revenue streams, managing cost structures, and understanding the power of keeping clear financial records.

​We also dived deep into the Agri-business sector covering everything from aquaculture and pulses to fresh produce and discussed practical ways to support young entrepreneurs through skills training, digital selling, financial support, and market networking.

All thanks goes to the East Africa market development Association for brought these opportunities to our community.

​This is part of a bigger vision, reaching 2,500 youth in Kwale County as part of a broader mission to empower 100,000 young people (ages 18–35) across 32 counties by 2030. Together, we’re shaping a future that is gender-equal, resilient, and full of opportunity.
