FOCUS HEROES RECOGNITION: NANCY JUMA

This week, the spotlight shines on the ever-shining star herself — Nancy Juma — a powerhouse of song, drama, leadership, and community passion whose God-given gifts have touched countless lives and left footprints that can never fade.

From the very first day she stepped into the FOCUS family, Nancy’s golden voice and magnetic stage presence turned ordinary moments into extraordinary experiences. Whether standing in church pews, commanding football grounds, filling busy marketplaces with song, serenading coffee plantation workers, inspiring students in classrooms, or even performing before two Heads of State — Nancy made sure the message of hope, empowerment, and transformation always landed right in the hearts of the people.

With FOCUS, art was never just art — it became a weapon for transformation. And at the very center of it all was Nancy. Together, we scooped trophies, certificates, and awards at National Drama and Music Festivals, owned the legendary G-Pange Youth Festivals, and even produced a full music album with Nancy as the lead soloist. Her voice wasn’t just heard — it healed, empowered, and inspired.

But Nancy’s brilliance was not confined to the stage. Her commitment opened international doors, earning her a fully sponsored trip to the USA to represent FOCUS at a global conference — proof that when passion meets purpose, the possibilities are limitless.

Inspired by her journey with FOCUS, Nancy pursued Community Development at JKUAT. She went on to pioneer the Young Women Initiative (YWI), supporting and empowering young mothers. From this, the young mothers birthed Pamoja Dada, an independent initiative providing psychosocial support and practical solutions to adolescent girls and mothers navigating challenging circumstances. Today, Nancy continues to serve with honor in the Siaya County Government — shaping policies, supporting families, and championing community transformation.

And Nancy didn’t just shine alone — she trained others in singing and acting, refusing to keep her gift to herself. She mentored, empowered, and opened doors for many, becoming a true support system for the youth, young mothers, and the entire community. She is an actor, a musician, a mentor, a community champion, a leader, a devoted mother, and a loving wife — a role model whose contributions are still felt and celebrated today.

With humor, passion, and unmatched artistry, Nancy has shown us that when talent is nurtured, dreams grow wings. Her story is a testimony that he who gives receives in abundance.

And in Nancy’s own words:

> “I am forever grateful to FOCUS for the platform. I had no idea about community service, charity, or social work — but FOCUS helped me discover my calling and build a career I now pursue with so much love and passion. It gave me the opportunity to meet national and international opinion leaders — all from my volunteerism at FOCUS. Truly, he who gives receives in abundance.”

Today, we don’t just recognize Nancy Juma — we celebrate her! From a vibrant high school graduate with a golden voice to a respected public servant shaping lives, Nancy is living proof that when dreams are shared with community, they blossom into legacies.

Hero Recognition: John Kim (Kim ama Waflora)

Every great story has its heroes, and for FOCUS, one of those heroes is none other than John Kimani, famously known as Kim ama Waflora.

Over 25 years ago, Kim and a few young dreamers in Ruiru came together—not with money or fancy offices—but with a passion for theatre. What started as a small traveling drama group quickly transformed into something bigger: Theatre for Development. At the height of the HIV and AIDS crisis, Kim and his team used the stage as their classroom, teaching, entertaining, and inspiring young people with life-saving messages.

But Kim didn’t stop at the stage. He and his colleagues looked around their community and saw orphans and vulnerable children who needed love, food, and education. That’s how the daycare and support center was born—the very foundation that has grown into what we now proudly call FOCUS. Imagine this: more than 25 years later, our daily feeding program at Githunguri Primary is still running strong, serving hundreds of thousands of hot, delicious meals since then, to children who might have gone hungry. Kim was part of that beginning. 💪🍛

Through the years, Kim wore many hats—peer educator, community leader, church youth leader, home-based care provider—you name it. He was always at the frontlines of service, and his energy was contagious. Many of today’s life-changing FOCUS programs, like PEPEA (which now equips thousands of boys and girls with life skills and hygiene packs), trace their roots back to the peer education movement Kim championed.

Today, Kim is miles away in France, but his impact is felt both here at home and abroad. He has reinvented himself as an Agent and Brand Ambassador for companies such as Equity Bank, Birdview Insurance, Nyota Njema Real Estate, Diaspora Properties, Lemfi, and more. He is also an events organizer, bringing Kenyans in France together through annual summer barbecues, East African football tournaments, and even the monthly Swahili Mass in Paris (now that’s unique! 🙌).

And because he can’t stop giving, every December on his birthday, Kim rallies support for vulnerable families in Kenya—a tradition he has kept for over a decade. Hundreds of families have felt the warmth of his generosity, proving that true heroes don’t just celebrate themselves; they celebrate others.

Kim himself says, “FOCUS gave me a good foundation. The passion to care for others and support the community was instilled in me in the early 2000s when we birthed FOCUS. I am forever grateful.”

As we celebrate John Kimani, we celebrate a man who helped plant a seed that has grown into a mighty tree—one that now shelters thousands through education, feeding programs, mentorship, and hope. His story reminds us that service has no borders. From Ruiru to Paris, Kim continues to embody what FOCUS stands for: compassion, vision, and action.

Hongera Kim! Your journey proves that when service is at the heart of what we do, the impact lasts for generations. Katuosis Trucking Joachim Wangui PEPEA mentorship

If you are from Runda yaani Ruiru Ndani and you have been in Ruiru for sometimes you must have met a youth group by the name Focus. Here is the fruit of their work then.

THE STORY OF MARGARET WANGARI – FROM VULNERABILITY TO EMPOWERMENT

When Margaret Wangari first joined the Focus Orphan and Vulnerable Children (OvC) Program, she was about seven years old and had never stepped into a classroom. Life had already placed immense burdens on her young shoulders—she was an orphan living with her aging grandparents, who survived only through scarce and unreliable casual labor. To Margaret, education felt like a dream too far to reach.

But in the hearts of a small group of unemployed young people, a seed of compassion and determination had been planted. Though they had little themselves, they believed that every child deserves a chance to learn, to dream, and to live with dignity. They embraced Margaret through the Focus OvC Program. With their support, and that of generous partners, she was enrolled at Focus Nursery School. The school was run by youth who, though many lacked formal training in early childhood education, had an unshakable desire to support and empower children like Margaret. She was late to start schooling, but it was never too late for hope.

Margaret later joined Githunguri Primary School, where she studied diligently and completed her primary education. Against all odds, she excelled in her Grade 8 exams and secured a place at Komothai Secondary School. This achievement was only possible because the Focus team and their supporters refused to give up on her.

One of the greatest lifelines for Margaret and many others was the feeding program. Every day, Focus youth carried hot lunch to her and fellow learners. What started as a humble act of love has grown into a structured feeding program that still runs today at Githunguri Primary, supporting more than 150 learners. Such programs are vital—they not only keep children in school but also improve concentration, performance, and attendance. A hungry child cannot learn, but a nourished child can dream and thrive.

High school presented new challenges. Focus did not have enough funds to fully support Margaret and her peers through secondary school. Yet the youth did not relent. They knocked on doors, visited offices, and tirelessly sought bursaries to ensure no child under their care missed a class. Their persistence bore fruit. Margaret successfully completed her secondary education, laying a solid foundation for her future.

After high school, she was blessed with opportunities to work in several companies. Each small step built her confidence, strengthened her independence, and equipped her with the ability to make informed life choices.

Today, Margaret Wangari is a living testament to the power of education and community support. She is an empowered young woman, married, and blessed with two children whom she is able to care for independently. Even after the loss of her grandparents, she has remained resilient, drawing strength from the foundation laid for her years ago by the Focus family.

Her journey is more than personal triumph—it is proof that when a community, even one made up of struggling youth, comes together with compassion and vision, lives can be transformed. Education broke the cycle of poverty for Margaret, and now she is shaping a better future for her children. This is how societies change—not through miracles, but through love, sacrifice, and the courage to stand with the vulnerable.

We deeply appreciate all those who stood in the gap for Wangari: the unemployed youth who chose service over despair, the partners and sponsors who believed in her, and the wider Focus family who walked with her every step of the way. Their sacrifice not only transformed her life but also lit a beacon of hope for many other vulnerable children.

Yet, countless children like Wangari still wait for someone to believe in them. This is a call to the Church, to organizations, to government, and to society at large: let us invest in the education, health, and future of orphans and vulnerable children. When we support a child, we do more than change one life—we transform entire families, communities, and generations.

Education is the key. Compassion is the door. Together, they unlock a better future.

The seed that was planted years ago by unemployed youth—who had passion and goodwill but no financial muscle—has today become a strong pillar. Many people now stand tall because of an idea birthed and nurtured in the midst of struggle and lack. This should encourage the youth of today: do not fear starting small, even in the most challenging situations. What begins as a humble effort can grow into a movement that transforms lives and generations. FOCUS Dream Center FOCUS Community Based Organization Katuosis Trucking Joachim Wangui.

HEROES SERIES | FOCUS CELEBRATES JOAKIM MWANGI aka KATUOSIS THE TRUCKING GUY
From Donkey Loads in Ndula to Driving 70ft Trucks Across America 🇰🇪➡️🇺🇸

For the past few weeks, we’ve been honouring the remarkable men and women who have walked with us – heroes molded by FOCUS. And today, we bring you a story that will make you laugh, cry, and above all, believe in the power of resilience, hope, and community.

Today, we celebrate JOAKIM MWANGI WANGUI, fondly known as KATUOSIS THE TRUCKING GUY – a name that now echoes across the highways and valleys of the United States of America.

But his journey didn’t begin with diesel engines and roaring highways.
It began with a donkey. 🐴 Yes, you read that right – a humble, dusty-footed donkey.

Humble Beginnings
Born in the semi-arid heartlands between Central and Eastern Kenya, in a tiny village called Ndula, Joakim grew up in a home of two children. Life wasn’t easy – it was dusty, dry, and demanding. From Ndula Primary to trekking kilometres to Ngoliba Secondary, he knew struggle firsthand.

After high school, while others dreamt of offices and college gowns, Joakim started his first “transport company” – with his loyal donkey as his fleet. He delivered firewood, water, manure, and sometimes even helped families relocate – becoming the original ‘Katuosis Movers Ltd.’ – one donkey load at a time!

And here's the kicker – how he managed to balance mattresses, jikos, sufurias, and chicken on a donkey cart while standing just 3 feet tall, only God knows! 🙃 The villagers often laughed, sometimes mocked, but Joakim never stopped. Because deep inside him was a burning dream, and a resilience the world couldn't measure. 💪

A Stage of Possibility
Then came the game-changer.

His uncle, impressed by what Focus was doing in empowering youth, introduced Joakim to our community. And after a memorable audition, Joakim joined FOCUS Youth Group – where his world and ours changed forever.

He wasn’t just a good actor – he was phenomenal. The 3-foot tall man would take on the role of a child with such ease, wit, and humour that audiences couldn't believe he wasn’t really a 10-year-old. His energy lit up every room. His courage uplifted every soul.

And Joakim’s super talent in acting soon became undeniable. He began featuring in major local TV programs as an actor, appeared in commercial adverts, and even helped launch a television series dedicated to stories of people with dwarfism – a first in Kenya and a major cultural milestone.

He became not only a performer but also a powerful advocate, breaking stereotypes and opening space for representation that had never existed before.
Soon, Joakim became a star in our drama troupe, a trainer of trainers, a facilitator, and a community educator. He wasn’t just acting – he was inspiring. And through his visibility and popularity, Joakim realized he had a responsibility bigger than himself.

Changing the Narrative
Using the platform he built, and with full backing from FOCUS, Joakim birthed the Short Stature Society of Kenya (SSSK) – the first of its kind in the country.

For the first time, hundreds of individuals with dwarfism felt seen, heard, and celebrated.

They ran programs, formed a football team (yes, and they’re competitive too! ⚽), held nationwide forums, and hosted media campaigns. He took the sting out of stigma. He turned shame into pride. He turned exclusion into empowerment.

And soon, their work caught the attention of their counterparts in the U.S. – Little People of America. They shared best practices, conducted medical camps, and began a powerful journey of cross-cultural empowerment. This global exposure gave birth to an even bigger vision – Little People of Africa – with none other than Joakim as its founding president.

The Trucking Guy – A Global Inspiration
But just when you thought the story peaked, Joakim flipped the script again.

Today, Joakim is not just in America – he is criss-crossing U.S. states behind the wheel of a 70ft-long truck. The same boy who never drove a car in Kenya (other than his donkey cart), is now piloting giant machines across thousands of miles – a feat even many 6-foot men fear!

Imagine that!
👉 From donkey in Ndula to diesel engines in Denver.
👉 From Ngoliba Secondary to Miami, Florida.
👉 From being looked down on to being looked up to across continents.

He is now a provider, a global voice, and a mentor to hundreds of youth and individuals living with dwarfism.

The Power of Focus – A Community That Believes
Joakim’s story is not just his alone – it is a testament to the power of community, the impact of inclusion, and the unmatched beauty of believing in people.

✔ FOCUS didn’t give him height. But it gave him hope.
✔ We didn’t buy him a truck. But we gave him a stage.
✔ We didn’t remove the odds against him. But we gave him the tools to beat them.

And Joakim – oh Joakim – he ran with it. 🏃‍♂️
He is now a beacon, a trailblazer, a superstar, and today, one of our most honoured heroes.

WE CELEBRATE YOU, KATUOSIS!
To Joakim Mwangi Wangui – you made us laugh, cry, cheer, and believe.

You taught us that you don’t need to be tall to rise high.
You proved that a big heart always wins.

And today, we celebrate you not just for who you are, but for how you've lifted others.

Keep driving, keep shining, and never forget –
once a FOCUS hero, always a FOCUS hero.

KATUOSIS THE TRUCKING GUY – WE SALUTE YOU!

From Tears to Triumph: The Inspiring Journey of Mary Njeri — Now Mama June

In Ruiru Githunguri village, over two decades ago, a little five-year-old girl named Mary Njeri Waithaka walked through the gates of Focus for the very first time. She carried no school bag, only a heavy heart — the kind that comes from never knowing the love of a mother, for hers passed on while giving her life.

Mary was welcomed and raised by her grandmother — the strong and selfless Cucu ya Gaceri, as she was lovingly called at Focus. Cucu toiled in coffee plantations for years to provide the basics. Life was difficult, but even in those tough moments, Focus chose to stand in the gap — and Mary became one of us.
The Seed of Hope

Mary may have arrived vulnerable, but what we saw in her was unmistakable: pure potential.

She joined Githunguri Primary School, and from day one, she was surrounded by a community of love and radical compassion — young, unemployed but visionary youth who, though they had no money, gave everything they had: their time, energy, and heart.
They:Delivered hot meals to the school every day

Made home visits to check on her well-being

Brought food rations to support the family

Offered after-school tuition and mentorship

They didn’t give because they had much — they gave because they believed. They believed that education is the equalizer, the key that unlocks futures and breaks cycles of poverty. For Mary, that belief became a lifeline.

From Vulnerability to Victory

Mary never missed school due to lack of school fees. She later joined Our Lady of Fatima Kiriko Girls, where, with support from Focus volunteers and generous sponsors, she excelled.

Her determination carried her forward into college, where she pursued a Diploma in Orthopedic and Trauma Medicine and a Certificate in Public Health. True to her resilient spirit, Mary then started a small business to support both herself and her aging grandparents.

She later joined Food for Education, playing a part in ensuring other children received the same nourishment and care she once relied on. Her journey came full circle — from being served to serving others.

Now, She’s Mama June

Today, Mary is not the small, vulnerable girl who once needed a hand. She is Mama June — a loving, present, and purposeful mother to her beautiful daughter, June.

Though currently not working so she can care for her child, Mary is ready to re-enter the workforce. She is actively seeking opportunities to support her daughter and care for her only remaining guardians — her elderly grandparents who once gave her everything.

On a recent visit, the Focus team witnessed a powerful sight: Mary, with her medical knowledge and kind heart, now caring for her ailing grandfather, just as he and Cucu once cared for her. A full circle of love. That is the true fruit of community. That is the true meaning of transformation.

A Heartfelt Appeal

Mary’s story is one of resilience, grace, and gratitude. It is also a tribute to the many unsung heroes — the unemployed youth who stepped up with heart, the sponsors who gave generously, and the teachers and mentors who never let go.

She is living proof that education breaks the poverty cycle, that love heals, and that communities can raise greatness from humble beginnings.

But today, Mary needs a hand.
She is actively looking for a job — in healthcare, public health, caregiving, or any field where she can grow and continue to give back.

If you or someone you know can connect her to an opportunity, you won’t just be helping her — you’ll be reigniting a legacy of hope that began in pain, grew in love, and is now anchored in purpose.

Mary Njeri — from Gaceri’s little girl to Mama June. A story of hope, healing, and the power of community.

One Child’s Success Can Transform an Entire - Jane Wairimu's story

In the early 2000s, a young girl named Jane Wairimu joined the FOCUS Orphan Care and Support Program.

Jane came from a very humble background. Her mother, a determined woman, sold bananas by the roadside to provide for her large family. Yet, the dream of education for Jane felt distant—until FOCUS stepped in.

Through our program, Jane’s education was fully supported from primary school through high school. With the burden of school fees lifted, she focused on her studies, excelled, and kept her dream of a brighter future alive.

Fast forward to 2024, and Jane’s life is a testimony of transformation. Through FOCUS connections, she secured a job at Food for Education, Kenya, as a Tap to Eat Manager. Within months, her hard work earned her a promotion, and today, she is financially independent and supporting her family.

The cycle of poverty that once overshadowed Jane’s future has been broken. What was once a story of vulnerability is now a story of hope, dignity, and opportunity.

At FOCUS, we believe every child deserves the chance to write their own success story. Jane is living proof that when we invest in education and mentorship, we invest in lasting change.

Breaking the Cycle of Poverty – The Transformational Journey of Jane Wairimu

In the early 2000s, in the quiet heart of a village in Kiambu County, a young girl named Jane Wairimu carried with her a dream—fragile, yet unwavering. She came from a large and struggling family, where her mother, a resilient woman, sold bananas by the roadside to feed her children and keep hope alive. With limited resources and no steady income, education for Jane seemed a distant luxury. But even in the harshest of circumstances, grace has a way of finding its path.

That grace came through FOCUS Orphan Care and Support Program—a humble initiative started by a small group of young, unemployed individuals who may not have had wealth, but were rich in compassion, purpose, and goodwill. They had no big offices or funding at the start—just hearts willing to serve and hands ready to lift those in need.

Jane was among the first children enrolled in the program. From primary school all the way through secondary school, FOCUS ensured her education was fully supported. The weight of school fees was lifted, and in its place, a newfound confidence took root. Jane poured her energy into her studies and blossomed. Her life began to change—not with sudden miracles, but with the steady, quiet power of opportunity, mentorship, and belief.

Jane’s educational journey took her to Our Lady of Fatma Kiriko Girls Secondary School, where she continued to shine. Later, she joined Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), equipping herself with the skills and qualifications to chart a new path in life. The community, the institutions, and the individuals who stood with her became the bridge between her struggle and her success.

In 2024, through networks created by FOCUS, Jane secured a position at Food for Education – Kenya, working as a Tap to Eat Manager. In a few short months, her dedication and leadership earned her a promotion. Today, she stands tall—not just as an employee, but as a beacon of hope. She is now financially independent, providing for her family, and has become the very support system her younger siblings and mother rely on.

The young girl whose dreams once seemed unreachable is now part of an organization that nourishes thousands of school children across Kenya through school feeding programs. She is giving back—paying forward the kindness and support that once sustained her.

Jane Wairimu’s journey is not just her story—it is the story of what happens when communities rise together. It is the story of youth with vision, of mentors who believed, of institutions that opened doors, and of every individual who gave selflessly to lift another.

To those who stood in the gap for Jane—to the volunteers, sponsors, teachers, and friends—thank you. Your support didn’t just educate a child; you transformed a life and inspired a movement.

At FOCUS, we believe that when we invest in one child, we plant the seeds for generational change. Jane is the living proof. Her story reminds us that poverty can be broken—not with pity, but with purpose, partnership, and persistent love.

May her journey inspire us all to keep standing in the gap—for the Janes of today, and for the countless others still waiting for a chance.
