Across our farm gardens, pumpkin plants are showing strong and healthy progress, from young vines spreading across the soil to mature plants producing large, nutritious pumpkins ready for harvest.

Through Sustainable Regenerative Farming practices such as mulching, soil care, and regular watering, Farming and health education."FHE". continues to strengthen food production while promoting better nutrition, environmental sustainability, and livelihood opportunities for families in Kakuma and Turkana County.

These gardens are more than farming spaces. They are living classrooms where communities learn practical agricultural skills, improve food security, and build resilience through locally driven solutions.

Every growing plant reflects the dedication of farmers, caregivers, and young people working together to create healthier futures and sustainable sources of income.

Step by step, seed by seed, communities are growing not only food, but hope, resilience, and opportunity.

Special thanks to hashtag for continuing to trust and support our Refugee-Led Integrated Regenerative Agriculture and Inclusive Education Initiatives in Turkana County.

In Kalobeyei, communities are embracing mushroom farming as a sustainable solution for nutrition, income generation, and food security.

Through the Farming and health education."FHE". mushroom farming initiative, mothers, caregivers, and young people are gaining practical skills in oyster mushroom production while building resilient livelihoods in Kakuma and Turkana County.

Through income-generating farming, the initiative helps families improve child health, strengthen household nutrition, and build sustainable economic opportunities based on Sustainable Regenerative Farming and health education.

Every harvest reflects dedication, teamwork, and community-driven impact. The fresh mushrooms being produced are nutritious, affordable, and locally grown to benefit families within the community.

Beyond improving diets, the initiative is creating livelihood opportunities, strengthening practical farming knowledge, and promoting environmentally sustainable practices that can continue for generations.

When communities grow their own food, they also grow resilience, dignity, and hope for the future.

Special thanks to hashtag for continuing to trust and support our Refugee-Led Integrated Regenerative Agriculture and Inclusive Education Initiatives in Turkana County.

We warmly welcome everyone to visit the FHE Kalobeyei Hub, learn more about mushroom farming, and support local livelihoods by purchasing fresh mushrooms directly from the farm.

At Farming and health education."FHE".Our Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) sessions are deeply connected to practical Regenerative farming activities.

Here, children learn Sustainable Regenerative Farming while also developing teamwork, communication, leadership, responsibility, and self-confidence through hands-on participation.

By combining farming with SEL, FHE creates a safe and engaging environment where children not only understand how to grow healthy food, but also how to support one another, solve problems together, and build positive relationships.

In the garden, you can see children eagerly observing vegetables, asking thoughtful questions, sharing ideas, and working together to nurture crops.

Beyond farming, these sessions provide a safe and supportive space that promotes emotional well-being, healthy lifestyles, food security awareness, and community participation.

By empowering children with practical knowledge and positive social skills, FHE is helping shape a generation that values sustainability, responsibility, and collective growth.

Small hands in the soil today are planting the seeds of stronger communities tomorrow.
Special thanks to hashtag for their continuing trusting us and for providing funding for our Refugee-Led Integrated Regenerative Agriculture and Inclusive
Education Initiatives in Turkana County.

In Kalobeyei Hub, our mentor conducted home visits and follow-up support sessions with beneficiaries of the Nurture+ Kakuma initiative.

Through this innovation, strengthens maternal well-being, nutrition, breastfeeding support, and early childhood development for refugee families by combining maternal health education, psychosocial support, and income-generating micro-farming activities.

These follow-up visits are part of FHEโ€™s commitment to ensuring mothers and caregivers not only receive farming tools and vegetable seeds but also gain the practical skills and mentorship needed to build sustainable livelihoods and healthier families.

During the visits, mentors assessed the progress of kitchen gardens established by beneficiaries and provided hands-on guidance in soil preparation, crop management, watering methods, and plant protection.

Mothers and caregivers actively demonstrated the sustainable farming techniques learned during training, showing dedication to improving household nutrition, food security, and child wellbeing.

These activities reflect FHEโ€™s community-grounded approach to creating long-term impact across Kakuma and Kalobeyei, supporting families beyond training and empowering them toward resilience and self-reliance.

Together, we are growing more than gardens; we are nurturing healthier children, empowered mothers, and stronger communities.

Today, we proudly spotlight Elsa Raubenheimer Lilienfeld for her incredible contribution to the +Kakuma project led by Farming & Health Education (FHE).
With decades of experience in education and a deep commitment to community-driven learning, hashtag supported the development of a practical, culturally relevant training booklet that is now empowering 20 mentoers and over 500 mothers and caregivers in Kakuma.
This booklet is more than a resource, it is a tool for sustainable learning. It continues to guide women beyond training sessions, strengthening mother circles, peer-to-peer support, and long-term mentorship within the community.
Through this initiative, knowledge does not end in the classroom, it lives on in homes, in conversations, and in the daily practices of mothers shaping healthier futures for their children.
Elsa Raubenheimer Lilienfeld is a retired education academic and democratic education consultant with school, university and alternative teaching experience in Africa and Australia.

After training 3,000+ teachers at university level, her current interests include supporting informal educators to establish basic early childhood educational skills with very limited resources through the DLS Children's Club. From time to time she trains facilitators to offer online learning content (multiple courses) adapted for use in low-resourced, multicultural communities.

Under the banner of Democratic Learning Services and in close consultation with the relevant communities, Elsa has developed and presented Positive Parenting, English, SEL and Community Health courses offered to refugees. The latter includes the health content and mentor training for the 2026 Nurture+ Kakuma project for FHE.

In 2020 Elsa started the Dolls & Lions Project in Kakuma Refugee Camp enabling a team of local women to produce crocheted dolls and lions to distribute to the children. This therapeutic project aims to encourage empathy and nurturing skills in children. To date 1,500+ toys have been handed out. Some crochet training has also been offered through this project.

Believing that a strong education is both a stepping stone to opportunities and the foundation for strong communities, Elsa also mentors university students from Africa and the Middle East during their quest for further education.

We celebrate this milestone and the power of collaboration in building resilient, informed, and empowered communities.
