🌍🌱 I CHOSE TO ACT — EVEN WHEN I DIDN’T HAVE ENOUGH

As the Coordinator of Nairobi Recyclers, I have learned that you don't need millions to make a difference. You start with what you have.

From Shalom Gardens to Kivuli Centre, we are creating green spaces, growing Pemba grass and kienyeji vegetables, and giving children practical lessons in environmental conservation. 🌿🥬

We are also working with four schools to promote waste segregation and responsible waste management because the environmental future of Nairobi begins with what we teach our children today. ♻️🏫

In Kabiria, we have taken another step by leasing a small piece of land for one year to grow vegetables. It may be small, but it represents food security, sustainable agriculture, community participation and hope. 🌱

We are also introducing “Wazee Tujibambe na Environment”, bringing our elders into environmental activities because their knowledge and experience are valuable to our communities. 👴🏾👵🏾💚

The journey is not easy. Resources are limited, but I believe change does not begin when everything is available—it begins when someone decides to act.

I chose to act.

Nairobi Recyclers is turning waste into opportunity, spaces into gardens and communities into environmental champions. ♻️🌍🌱

I welcome partners, well-wishers, schools, businesses and friends of the environment to join us.

**Dear Friends and Supporters,**

Throughout the month of **August**, **Nairobi Recyclers** will implement a **one-month environmental education project** in **Kabiria**, targeting **20 children**.

The project will equip the children with practical skills in waste segregation, organic manure production from biodegradable waste, tree seedling nursery establishment, kienyeji vegetable farming, and basic landscaping. These skills will help them become responsible environmental stewards, promote food security, improve sanitation, and enable them to share their knowledge with their families and the wider community.

The project will be grounded in **Community Organising* and the *Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD)* approach, building on the strengths, skills, and resources already available within the community to ensure sustainability and local ownership.

We welcome the support and participation of friends, partners, volunteers, and well-wishers as

🌍 FROM WASTE TO HOPE: HOW NAIROBI RECYCLERS IS BUILDING A GREENER, HEALTHIER AND MORE FOOD-SECURE KENYA 🌱♻️

Imagine a Nairobi where every household separates its waste, every market's organic waste becomes rich compost, every school grows its own vegetables, unemployed youth earn a living through green enterprises, older persons continue contributing to society through farming, and children grow up understanding that protecting the environment is everyone's responsibility.

This is not just a dream—it is the future that Nairobi Recyclers is working tirelessly to build.

Every day, tonnes of organic waste from homes, markets, schools, restaurants, and institutions are dumped in landfills where they release methane, pollute our environment, block drainage systems, and contribute to climate change. Yet more than half of this waste can be transformed into valuable resources that regenerate our soils, strengthen food systems, and create sustainable livelihoods.

At Nairobi Recyclers, we believe that waste is not a problem—it is an opportunity waiting to be transformed.

Through our Sustainable Organic Waste Management and Agriculture Programme, we collect, separate, and recycle biodegradable waste into organic compost, liquid fertilizers, soil conditioners, animal feed ingredients, and other environmentally friendly products that support sustainable agriculture and reduce pollution.

Our work goes far beyond recycling.

We are creating community demonstration farms where families, schools, youth groups, and institutions learn practical skills in organic farming, composting, permaculture, rainwater harvesting, kitchen gardening, tree growing, and climate-smart agriculture.

We are empowering young people with green skills that can create employment and entrepreneurship opportunities while protecting the environment.

We are supporting schools to establish environmental clubs where children become champions for climate action and sustainable living.
