Restoring Nature, Transforming Lives in Kinangop
A new chapter in environmental restoration and community empowerment is unfolding in Kinangop, Nyandarua County. COPICAD, a non-governmental organization, has launched a six-year project, with support from the World Resources Institute, aimed at creating lasting positive change for both communities and the environment.
The project will see the planting of 70,000 trees in the Aberdare Forest and in homes along River Mukungi and Kitiri. This effort will help protect water sources, restore ecosystems, and improve climate resilience in the area.
At the same time, the project focuses on improving livelihoods. 150 community members will benefit from apple farming. Over 100 beehives will also be distributed to support beekeeping. This will help families earn income from honey, wax, and other bee products.
To begin this journey, meetings were held with community members from Karima, Katiri, Magooko and Kabi Mbao. The community welcomed the project with great excitement and support.
This initiative shows how environmental action can also improve lives and build stronger communities. As the project begins, Kinangop stands as a promising example of how local action can protect nature while improving lives.
