πŸ“’ Bridging the Digital Divide in Mombasa!
For three days, Vision of the Blind (VOB) brought together 100 participants from Nyali and Kisauni sub-counties in Mombasa for a transformative digital literacy and civic participation training, thanks to FEMNET through the EU Kenya delegation. Persons with physical, visual, hearing, and psychosocial disabilities among other categories of impairments, came together to learn, share, and demand better access to technology.

Our Swahili motto was: "Tunataka mawasiliano bora, si bora mawasiliano" (We need inclusive communication, rather than communication for granted).

But the reality remains: the high cost of assistive technology continues to be a major barrier, and tailored digital literacy programs are still too few. We can change this, but we need everyone on board.

Are you a Person with Disability living in Changamwe, Jomvu, Kisauni, or Nyali Sub-Counties of Mombasa County?
Vision of the Blind (VOB) invites you to participate in a Baseline Survey on Digital Literacy and Civic Participation of Persons with Disabilities.
The survey seeks to understand the challenges and opportunities that persons with disabilities experience in accessing and using digital technologies and participating in civic and public life. Your experiences and opinions will help inform interventions that promote digital inclusion, accessible civic engagement, and disability-inclusive development.

Your participation is voluntary, and all information shared will be treated with confidentiality and used solely for the purposes of this study.
This survey is being conducted by Vision of the Blind (VOB) under the Meaningful Engagement for Transformative Action (META) Project, supported by the European Union Delegation to Kenya through a consortium comprising FEMNET, the SDGs Kenya Forum, and Women Engage for a Common Future (WECF).

Introductory workshop under schools2030 project, convened at sapphire hotel Mombasa:
Purpose: A research study to strengthen tools and guidance to support teachers in ensuring learning environments are inclusive for children with Disabilities.
We represented Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPD's) at the forum whose objective was for stakeholders to agree on various aspects of the project in order to set the pace for maximum results.
Key takeaways:

 Evidence based mitigation was viewed to be the most preferable bridge to real, gainful and meaningful inclusion of Children with Disabilities in matters access to preprimary education in order to lay down a strong foundation for their future.

 Partners appreciated the fact that going forward to the future, deliberate actions needed to be put in place so as to enhance participation of OPD's in similar and any other related initiatives.

US-Kenya Strategic Trade and Investment Partnership (STIP) discussions for the labor chapter: attended by: Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU), Kenya Female Advisory Organization (KEFADO), Gender Equality and social inclusion (GESI), Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA), Office of the Data Protection, Department of Trade among other Kenya government departments.
Hudson (CEO Vision of the Blind), Jemimah from APDK Mombasa and Omari Ali Tandara, chairman Kilindini Youth Deaf Empowerment CBO, articulated submissions on behalf of negotiators with Disabilities.

The meeting was quite interesting as it was an eye opener to most of the duty-bearers.

We were happy to register commitments from US government to consider our recommendations.

UDPK nominated negotiators with Disabilities from Mombasa County to represent the Disability fraternity in the US-Kenya Strategic trade and investment partnership (STIP) discussions for the labor chapter. The team embarked on a consultative meeting which was chaired by USAID whereby we managed to collect and compile submissions received from the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), and OPD's (including Vision of the Blind) for presentation.
The views were ranging from existing Disability inclusion gaps in both formal and informal sectors and recommendations.

Big thanks to UDPK for supporting the preparatory meeting.
