L'Arche Kenya The idea of starting L’Arche in Kenya was born in Nyahururu by the volunteers and staff of St. Martin CSA.

L’Arche Kenya is a community of people with and without intellectual disabilities based in Nyahururu promoting inclusion of people with disabilities in the society They wanted to empower the local community to care for and support people with disabilities. In November, 2008, the home welcomed its first members. They decided to call the home Effatha which, in Aramaic, means “open up” or “be opened.”

This journey to have an Act for People with Disabilities in Nyandarua County began with the L'Arche Kenya engagements with stakeholders in the county in 2020-2021.

The engagements gave birth to the proposed bill which through the year 2025 was sponsored by Joyce Munyua in the county assembly.

It is therefore encouraging to see the bill go through first reading and the ongoing public participation after which the bill will be read the second and the third time.

Muremi, fondly known as Pastor Muremi, is a dedicated day program core member at L’Arche Kenya, working faithfully from Monday to Friday. His gifts shine in both housekeeping and the candle workshop, where he brings compassion and care to every task.
In housekeeping, he is especially committed to wiping tables, a role he carries out with heartfelt dedication. His joy in engaging with people and sharing messages of hope makes him a cherished presence in the community.

Beyond his daily work, Samuel’s deep spirituality has earned him the name Pastor Muremi. He loves to pray for his mother, his auntie, his former school (Kimaru Special School), L’Arche Kenya, and parents everywhere.
His dream is to work hard and support his family, and his faith continues to inspire those around him. Pastor Muremi reminds us that hope, prayer, and compassion are powerful gifts that build stronger communities.

Last week, Our Disabilities Resource Persons (DRPs) gathered at Mochongoi Catholic Parish Center for a training and retreat aimed at strengthening their role in advancing disability inclusion.
The program focused on two key objectives: Equipping DRPs with knowledge and skills in lobbying, advocacy, and awareness. Providing knowledge on personal development in all aspects of life, in line with L’Arche Kenya’s mission of fostering dignity, inclusion, and empowerment for persons with disabilities.
This training and retreat inspired DRPs to continue spreading and supporting the mission of L’Arche Kenya promoting inclusion, safeguarding dignity, and strengthening communities in our target areas and beyond.

Today we celebrate Joe, who has been an Assistant in L’Arche Kenya for more than six years. He is a visionary whose heart beats for inclusion and community. Joe believes in the power of service and friendship, where every person’s hidden gifts especially those with disabilities are seen and honored.

His life is full of stories, reflections, and creative sharing. Through quotes, videos, and invitations, Joe inspires us to see everyday moments as chances to build memories and nurture belonging.

For Joe, faith, mentoring, and teaching are not duties they are his way of helping people grow and feel respected. He reminds us that hope and harmony are built together, never forced.

Joe lives by what he values most: people, service, creativity, and the joy of making each day meaningful.
