L'Arche Kenya

L'Arche Kenya The idea of starting L’Arche in Kenya was born in Nyahururu by the volunteers and staff of St. Martin CSA.

L’Arche Kenya is a community of people with and without intellectual disabilities based in Nyahururu promoting inclusion of people with disabilities in the society They wanted to empower the local community to care for and support people with disabilities. In November, 2008, the home welcomed its first members. They decided to call the home Effatha which, in Aramaic, means “open up” or “be opened.”

At L’Arche Kenya, our heartbeat is the mission of “Making Known the Gifts of Persons with Intellectual Disability.” We believe that education is the key that opens the door to these gifts, allowing every learner to thrive in an environment of acceptance and support.

Recently, we hosted an Education Open Day themed “Literacy for People, the Planet and Prosperity.” It was a powerful gathering in Nyahururu that brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education, TSC, NCPWD, and County Bursary Committees, alongside caregivers and learners with special needs.

The day was filled with hope and practical solutions. We were privileged to learn from Madam Susan Mundia (CSO Laikipia North), who shed light on essential government support mechanisms from bursaries and affirmative action to assistive devices and tax exemptions. A vital takeaway for our community was the importance of proper disability registration to unlock these life changing opportunities.

This event wasn't just about discussions; it was about a renewed commitment to retention, transition, and empowerment. Whether through formal schooling or vocational apprenticeship pathways, we are dedicated to ensuring that learners with disabilities have access to opportunities that match their true aspirations.

Our deepest gratitude goes to our partners and donors OPSA Padova - Opera della Provvidenza S. Antonio, L'Arche International, and Agence Française de Développement (AFD) whose investment creates these inclusive spaces where humanity and learning meet.

At L’Arche Kenya, we believe that every tool we master should serve a higher purpose: creating a world where everyone belongs. This week, our dedicated staff took a bold step into the future by participating in a transformative two day AI capacity-building training, generously supported by our partners at Commundo.

Learning about Artificial Intelligence isn't just about efficiency; it’s about finding new ways to amplify the voices of our core members and streamline our service.

We are learning to use this technology responsibly to strengthen our services and ensure no one is left behind.

As we explore these digital frontiers, our focus remains on the ethical and human dimensions of technology. AI can process data, but it cannot replace the humanity, warmth, and personal connection that define our community.

We are committed to using AI as a bridge to greater inclusion and dignity for persons with disabilities.
Thank you, Commundo, for empowering us to grow!

Ndungu is a vibrant young man and cherished core member living in Effatha Home. His days are filled with meaningful work in the farm workshop, where he takes care of feeding chickens and goats. With a friendly personality and a love for making friends, Ndungu is always ready to welcome new people into the community, bringing joy and openness wherever he goes. His presence is a reminder of the gift of belonging and the beauty of friendship.

Beyond his farm duties, Ndungu has recently extended his support to the accounts and finance office, where he helps by emptying dustbins and keeping the space clean. His willingness to serve in different areas reflects his cheerful spirit and dedication to the life of the community. These small but important acts of service show how inclusion allows everyone’s gifts to shine and contribute to the common good.

Ndungu lives with an intellectual disability (autism), yet his resilience, kindness, and enthusiasm continue to inspire those around him. His journey is a testament to the power of inclusion, showing that every person’s contributions enrich the life of L’Arche Kenya. Today, we celebrate Paul for his joyful heart, his hard work, and the way he reminds us that true community is built on friendship, dignity, and shared responsibility.

The Annual Guardians Thanksgiving Day is a cherished occasion at L’Arche Kenya, dedicated to appreciating and honoring the guardians and families of persons with intellectual disabilities.

Guardians are pillars of love, support, protection, and advocacy. Their commitment ensures dignity and belonging for their family members, and today we celebrate their achievements while strengthening the partnership between guardians and our community.

This day is also our annual call to action: to sustain inclusive homes, occupational therapy workshops, and community care.
