Children who are facing parental neglect at home require empathy, deeper understanding and diving into the rootcause of what looks like irresponsibility and carelessness.

At Lifesong KENYA, we are grateful to neighbors, classmates and teachers who are helping us to get to the rootcause of parental neglect.

SUPERPOWER SERIES: Meet Tausi — THE INFLUENCER

Tausi has always exercised his charm, aura and influence since he was 10 years old. When he was still in school, Tausi used his influence to convince another boy to drop out of school. His voice, so powerful, was pulling people downward.

After dropping out of school, Tausi ended up on the rough and unforgiving streets of Korogocho, where his natural influence kept him out of trouble. He would often stick his neck out, by volunteering to get stuff done, which earned him respect from street gangs leaders.

After a policewoman rescued him, Tausi arrived at our Halfway House, where we immediately noticed something. He would go to school, notice other learners who were struggling and suggest solutions. Other boys listened and followed him.

A few years ago, Tausi was struggling in school and used his influence to convince other boys to quit school. After processing our heartbreak and disappointment, we made a choice. Instead of punishing Tausi’s influence, we used our Co-Active model of coaching and leadership to reframe and redirect his influence into a superpower.

Today, Tausi is helping Lifesong Kenya to identify boys who need support. He notices the silent strugglers and uses his influence to advocate for their welfare.

The same voice that once pulled downward now pulls others from the brink of collapse using influence as his superpower.

At Lifesong Kenya, we don't fix boys. We reframe their troubles and redirects them to their life purpose. Every boy has a superpower that the world hasn't learned to see.

Today, when you see a boy who looks like trouble, or your own son exhibits signs that he is in trouble, do not write him off. Get in touch with us and let's redirect and reframe their troubles.

THE SUPERPOWER SERIES

Over the next 8 weeks, Lifesong KENYA will share the stories of 8 boys from our Halfway House for boys. These are not conventional success stories that follow the familiar arc of broken-to-fixed or lost-to-found. They follow a different arc of misread to redirection.

THE REFRAMING PHILOSOPHY

Thanks to our ongoing collaboration with Helen House, Monica Garcia, Andrea Fleischfresser, Camila Bennett, Daniel Pooch and our founder James Ouma, we are learning that behaviors which appear most destructive often mask the most constructive gifts in our exceptional young men.

The boy who influences others into running away from our Halfway House is not a bad influence but an influencer who needs redirection. The boy who is slow with chores is not lazy but deliberate in his actions.

The boy who lies about school absences is not dishonest but a storyteller who is in crisis. We are learning these valuable lessons, thanks to using the Co-Active model of coaching to "reframe and not to fix."

MEET OUR SUPERHEROES

Week 1 — Tausi: The Influencer The boy who convinced another to drop out of school now convinces boys to stay.

Week 2 — Kaka: The Strategist Called clumsy and slow, his patience nurtures life.

Week 3 — Kiwi: The Observer Misread as rude, his silence sees everything.

Week 4 — Prof: The Mathematician Written off as a truant, he is our most reliable steward.

Week 5 — Split: The Storyteller The boy who lied to survive now writes stories that heal.

Week 6 — Rays: The Protector Rude to his mother, he is now her greatest advocate.

Week 7 — Captain: The Mobilizer Seen as pushy, he keeps our programs running rain or shine.

Week 8 — Keys: The Analyst Overlooked for being quiet, he sees the full picture.

Eight boys and eight superpowers that manifested after we reframed weaknesses and turned them into potent superpower! Join us as we share each story starting, God willing, tomorrow.

Today was a day well spent. Lifesong SWB team traveled to Kensvalley for our first friendly matches where our team emerged top in both categories. Our team also received accolades for showing calmness on the ball, maturity and discipline.

Under 13 Team:

Game 1. Lifesong SWB vs Kensvalley Academy 2-1
Game 2. Lifesong SWB vs Bobbystar Academy 1-1 (Won on penalties 2-0 as our keeper saved a couple of penalties.)

Under 16 Team:

Game 1. Lifesong SWB vs Bobbystar Academy 2-1
Game 2. Lifesong SWB vs Bobbystar Academy 0-0 (We won 2-1 on aggregate).

It was a very wonderful experience for our boys who have never traveled out of the village for footballing purposes.

"I have never imagined visiting such a prestigious school like Kensvalley and I am grateful that football brought me here," Under 13 Team Captain.

On to the next one!

It rained last night and made the football pitch muddy. But, that didn't stop our boys from reading Naisula Tours Marsabit County written by
Vera Omwocha and Hussein Munira and published by Queenex.

By opting to play on the half of the field, our boys showed they are responsible for their collective and individual growth. On our part, we are using their love for football to create a passion for reading books and improving their reading and writing skills.

If you are an author or publisher who has a book you would like us to read, kindly DM us for collection or drop your books at our office in Ngong.

One of the questions that we hear most often is this:

"Why boys? Don't women and girls need more help?"

They do. And that is exactly why we work with boys.

For fourteen years, Lifesong Kenya has walked alongside the most vulnerable boys in Kenva--bovs who have been abandoned by their fathers, failed by systems and written off as trouble and problems.

We do not focus on boys instead of supporting women and girls. We do it so that women and girls will not need rescue tomorrow.

At Lifesong Kenya, we know that a boy who is healed today does not become a man who harms tomorrow. DM us to be part of our mission or learn more on our website.

Do you remember asking for a new pair of underwear from your parent, guardian or older sibling? Was it easy or hard?

Saying 'my underwear is worn out and I need a new one' takes more courage than you'd think. For boys in our School Sponsorship Program, getting a new pair of underwear is not just about shopping—it's about learning to name what they need, speaking up and choosing with confidence.

Every walk to Ngong Open Air Market is a lesson in clarity, courage, self-respect and taking initiative and responsibility. And somewhere between price tags and fabric quality, we get to truly know the exceptional young man beside us.

Nurturing Dreams

Our Halfway House kitchen garden is a playground where every leaf tells a story of responsibility, resilience and enduring hope.

We are not just growing vegetables for local consumption and saving money and time spent from buying from the market, we are equipping our boys with lifelong valuable hands-on skills they will use create jobs with, generate income and sustain their own families and communities.

By using available resources and manure from our chicken coop, our boys are learning that sustainability starts from using your own two hands. They are also learning that using a small patch of land is the beginning of a greater story in the future.

We are dreaming of more land — not for bigger harvests alone, but to amplify our impact and transformation. We're dreaming of equipping more boys with work ethic, providing more meals and firing the engine of independence.

Our shamba where we are growing onions, vegetables and tomatoes at our Halfway House is thriving. But, the space is limited.

Imagine what we can do with a big piece of land!
