It is very unfortunate that in Rangwe a teacher has been engaging girls in transactional s*x. Nyanjaja Mixed Secondary School in Homa-bay County was visited by the Ministry of Education and Department of Children after a post went up on social media allegedly from a parent/student that read, " Welcome to Nyanjaja school where s*x is the order of the day, where a teacher buys a female student yoghurt and cakes, buys fish in exchange for s*x....where you survive there you see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil, where a teacher is found sleeping with a female student, the colleagues team up to support their 'own'.
There's is currently a rise in transactional s*x in most learning institutions. The painful truth is at the end of the day it is the poor girls and boys who suffer the brunt as the adults trading goods for s*x exploit them s*xually, destroy them emotionally and move on to other unsuspecting lot. Again HIV new infections among the youth is at a high prevalence in Homa-bay since 2018 and it is sad that situations like this contribute to spread of HIV among teenagers 13 to 17 and also transactional s*x is a root cause of teenage pregnancy among girls who come from poor households and go to distance day schools in pursuit of education.
The Homa-bay County and Ministry of Education and key stakeholders with interests in matters of Education and Prevention of Gender Based Violence should come out to conduct an investigative study in other day schools in the area and sensitive students on Sexual Offences Act and Children's Act and referral pathways. County should establish an official, safe reporting mechanism. Head teachers and Principals should be trained on how to handle such cases and how to whistle. The TSC should have a child safeguarding policies as they deal directly with children and teachers should commit to such by submitting a signed copy of declaration of commitment every year. There is need to include child safeguarding as part of the training for teachers.
We hope that this case is going to open ways for better programming around Prevention of Sexual Offences in learning institutions .

International Day of the Girl Child: October 11th

Don't forget to tell your daughters about Serena Williams.

Don't forget to tell your sons about accepting a woman's strength.

Tell your sons to let her fly.

Tell your sons to learn how to cook, so then there's no point turning a Serena into a maker of soups, a salt-on-plantain heroine... when all she wants to do is kick ass.

Tell your daughters not to be afraid of the power within.

Tell them to lead wars. Tell them to walk on water.

Cuts from broken glasses will heal. If they want to find out how pain feels, let them.

The experience is more important than the cuts.

Don't forget to tell your daughters about dreams.

Let them know they are equal to men.

Get them bicycles to ride. Teach them how to swim. Enrol them in a French class. Buy them books. Let them read. Tell them the story of Deborah. Earn a black belt. Fight.

Let them ride a horse. Kill a rat. Crush a roach under a foot at 5.

Tell them they are enough.

Tell them they are whole. And amazing. Beautiful. Brilliant.

Allow them to be odd. Different. Crazy.

Tell them about naysayers. And their place beneath a pile of p**p.

Talk about bills. And financial freedom.

Talk about Anger. Talk Determination. Talk Peace. Talk Greatness.

Talk about Nina. And Shonda. And Oprah. And Mo. And Morrison. And Maya.

But most importantly...

Don't forget to tell your daughters about Serena Williams.

The greatest.

Have you ever wondered the curious questions your teenager may have? We had a secret-ballot questioning session with the girls in Ndhiwa, Homabay. The girls were asked to write any questions they want to ask on s*xual reproductive health that is bothering them but they don't feel safe to ask the teacher. Some questions were deep, and some funny myths while most indicated that parents and society don't discuss s*x and s*xuality with their teenagers. These are some of the questions:
1. Why are some girls in class 7 and 8, even 6 using family planning. Is it right? Is it healthy for our bodies?
2. Is it wrong( indecent act) for a male teacher to pinch girls waist?
3. What is the right age to have a boyfriend?
4. Some girls are really smelling bad how can they be helped?
5. Can you provide free sanitary towel to a girl who is at home( we usually support needy girls in school with pads).
6. Is it true that if you wash your va**na with lemon after s*x you can't get pregnant?
8. My period lasts 7days and it comes after every 16 or 18 or 7days, is it normal?
9. Is it okay for a guardian to force a girl to do abortion because the girl said her husband got her pregnant (this case was followed up and girl rescued and defiler punished by law).
10. If one has s*x with a young boy is it possible to get pregnant?

These questions and many more have been asked. Nyarongi Women Network has trained women mentors, girls and boys patrons who facilitate forums with youths and answer questions and provide relevant information. We organize speakers like nurses, doctors, and SRHR (Sexual Reproductive Health Rights)experts to dimystify the myths and give information necessary for change.
