It's International Women's Day, and we are celebrating the courage and hard work of the SHE College Fund students who are changing the story of women and girls throughout Narok County. Call it "The S.H.E. Effect"! Young women who said no to FGM and/or early forced childhood marriage and/or the denial of their right to education -- are going to college, getting jobs, coming back to the village and building their mother a house or buying their family some cows or teaching the daughters of the community about their rights!

Get this:

100% of S.H.E. students have graduated since 2015 (as compared to 60% nationwide and 2% among Maasai women). That's 119 students and graduates!

97% of graduates have found work (as compared to 30% to 40% nationwide)

The twenty incoming S.H.E.students are off to their first day of college‼️ Imagine being the first female in your family to go beyond primary school. Imagine then getting a full scholarship to college. Imagine traveling to a big city for the first time, gathering your books, new clothes and supplies, trying to find your school, your hostel, your classes. Now imagine doing all this when your parents or elders, though they may be proud of you, have no idea how to help you because they never went to school.

The first S.H.E.student, Meteur Jacinta did this completely alone. Then she personally took the next generation of S.H.E. students to school. Today, because of her, the S.H.E. Fund has become not just a scholarship program, but a family. This week, staff and older students took all the new students shopping, bought them soap, bedsheets, toothbrushes, books; traveled with them to school, sometimes for 8 - 12 hours in a bus; helped them to settle in their hostels, register for classes, buy their books... As Peninah says in the video below, "S.H.E. is the family I never had."

Glimpse in these photos the first college moments of a few of the students. Send your blessings to them all as they not only negotiate the challenges of the first days of a totally new life, but deeply transform the legacy of oppression women in their culture have carried for generations.

Some of the most heroic people I know are the directors of the safe houses in Narok, Kenya. We now work with NINE of them!! And one of my favorite S.H.E. initiatives is our commitment to creating networking opportunities for the directors and the S.H.E. Team. It is a win-win! Not only do we share a meal together, but we have a feast of networking, communication, support and inspiration! We all have the same goal: to give each student the support, mentorship, spiritual guidance, and academic opportunity to become the changemaker she longs to be!

Front line, from left ; Jacinta (Director of Students and co-founder of S.H.E.College Fund) , Josephine - Social Worker, Maasai Development and Education Project; Linda Sewe- head teacher/manager, Soila Girls Rescue Centre; Nailois (S.H.E.Team);
Back from right; Emmah Ketter (Director of Programs, S.H.E.College Fund); Stanley Koisaba - Manager, Siyiapei Children's Home, John - Deputy Director, House of Love; Reverend Peter Sinti - Director, House of Love; and Bishop Patrick Ngigi - Director, Mission with a Vision safe house.

Some of these heroic people travel up to 6 hours over rough roads to join the gatherings. We are so grateful!

Special thanks to Patrick Ngigi and House of Hope for hosting us!

We are also proud to partner with Olmalaika Trust, Kisarru Nkerra Initiative and Osotua Rescue Center.
