Community for Environment and Climate Change

Pastoralist communities are steadily reshaping their way of life in response to climate change, blending tradition with innovation. While livestock keeping remains central, many are diversifying their livelihoods to reduce risk from prolonged droughts and unpredictable weather. Mobility patterns are becoming more strategic, and indigenous knowledge is now complemented with modern climate information to guide grazing and settlement decisions.

At the same time, smart agriculture is emerging as a practical solution in arid and semi-arid lands. Communities are embracing drought-resistant crops, short-season farming, and efficient irrigation methods, often supported by nearby rivers or harvested rainwater. This shift not only improves food security but also reduces overdependence on livestock, creating more stable and sustainable sources of income.

Equally important is the growing realization of community-owned resources in addressing water challenges. Local initiatives are focusing on rainwater harvesting, water storage systems, and landscape restoration to improve water retention. By mobilizing collective action and local leadership, communities are building resilience, ensuring that water access supports both livelihoods and long-term environmental sustainability.

Local governance and community-led approaches play a critical role in shaping how communities mobilize resources and sustain long-term impact. Strong, inclusive governance structures ensure that local priorities are identified, resources are managed effectively, and solutions are driven by the community itself. This foundation is essential for building resilience and promoting ownership of development initiatives.

During the GEL Project handover, emphasis was placed on strengthening existing community governance systems. The Community-Led Management Committees (CLMC) and women leaders in water management demonstrated the importance of inclusive leadership in decision-making processes. Their active involvement ensures that diverse voices are represented and that water resources are managed equitably and sustainably.

By reinforcing governance structures and empowering local leadership, the community is better positioned to sustain project outcomes beyond external support. Strengthened governance not only enhances accountability and transparency but also builds long-term resilience, enabling communities to adapt to challenges and continue driving their own development pathways.

Nature embassy World Water Day reminds us of the commitment and dedication demonstrated by community role models who work tirelessly to improve access to safe and reliable water. These individuals inspire collective action, showing that lasting change begins at the grassroots level. Their efforts highlight the importance of unity, responsibility, and shared vision in addressing water challenges that affect daily life, health, and livelihoods.

Through resource mobilization, communities can harness what they already have—knowledge, skills, and local networks—to create meaningful solutions. Identifying challenges such as water scarcity, poor infrastructure, or contamination allows communities to focus their energy where it matters most. With proper planning and collaboration, even limited resources can be transformed into impactful initiatives that promote sustainability and resilience.

Ultimately, communities do not lack solutions; they often need clear strategies and strong direction. When people come together with purpose, they can design and implement solutions that are practical and long-lasting. Empowering communities to take ownership ensures that progress is maintained, proving that the power to solve water challenges truly lies within the community itself.

GEL – Governance, Ecosystem & Livelihoods

we believe that lasting solutions to environmental and social challenges come from within the community. Our GEL Project— , , and —focuses on strengthening water security and improving livelihoods through community-led governance and women’s leadership. In regions where water scarcity threatens daily life, is building resilience by empowering local voices to take charge of their natural resources.

A key intervention under GEL is the restoration and protection of rock water catchment systems, also known as rock encroachment structures. These naturally available rock surfaces are transformed into effective water harvesting points. During rainy seasons, water is collected, preserved, and stored for household use, reducing long walking distances in search of water and easing the burden on women and children. By rehabilitating these structures, communities are reclaiming sustainable, low-cost solutions rooted in local knowledge.

Women play a central role in this transformation. Through inclusive governance structures, women are leading decision-making processes on water management, maintenance, and equitable distribution. This strengthens accountability while ensuring that water resources directly support household needs and small-scale livelihood activities such as kitchen gardening and livestock care.

The GEL Project demonstrates that communities can solve their own challenges using communally available resources. With shared responsibility, local leadership, and ecosystem restoration, water becomes not just a resource—but a foundation for dignity, resilience, and sustainable livelihoods.

Nature Embassy 2025 grounded our work in listening, learning, and acting with communities. We centered clean, accessible water as dignity, health, and resilience, not charity. Through dialogue and practice, we recognized water as the entry point for trust, cooperation, and long-term environmental stewardship across pastoral landscapes.

We advanced practical solutions by promoting water stationers, local maintenance skills, and shared governance. Communities mapped springs, harvested rain, and improved storage using materials already available. By valuing indigenous knowledge and collective labor, utilization of community resources became a pathway to ownership, reduced costs, and solutions that endure beyond projects.

As 2026 proceeds, our focus is clear: pastoralist-led climate and community development initiatives. We will strengthen leadership, data, and partnerships while protecting rangelands and livelihoods. Water remains our anchor, guiding adaptation, equity, and locally driven innovation that scales responsibly and honors culture through inclusive governance, youth mentorship, accountable financing, and measurable impact for pastoral communities worldwide.
