Mt. Kenya Wildlife Conservancy

Mt. Kenya Wildlife Conservancy MKWC is a non-profit trust dedicated to preserving Mount Kenya's wildlife.

From breeding and rewilding the Mountain Bongo to caring for animal orphans, we work hard to conserve and educate on conservation, to protect nature's future in our foothills. The Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy works to prevent extinction of
the unique wildlife of Mount Kenya and beyond. We continue to save and rescue endless numbers of wild creatures and breed endangered species for survival and rehabilitation back to their ancestral homes.

Wildlife conservation doesn’t clock out.

Night check-ups, morning treatments, and everything in between, our team always shows up with the animals' wellbeing at heart, ensuring the animals in our care are safe, well-fed, and living in clean, healthy environments that support their recovery and wellbeing.

There are busy days and unexpected challenges, but there's also a lot of joy in what we do. Watching the animals in our care grow stronger and knowing we're making a difference in their lives is what makes it all so rewarding.

Climate change is no longer a distant conversation; it is already shaping the world around us. That is why restoring and protecting nature matters now more than ever.

Together with partners like I&M Foundation, Prague Zoo, and local communities, we continue to restore degraded forest areas around Mount Kenya by planting indigenous trees and nurturing them as they grow. These restored habitats are critical for the survival of the endangered mountain bongo and many other wildlife species.

This World Environment Day, let us all play a part in protecting the future of our planet.

Sometimes, a single moment can change the course of a life.

For Mohammed Katambo one of our team members, it was the heartbreak of witnessing the devastating impact of elephant poaching. Seeing Africa’s iconic wildlife under threat sparked a passion that would grow into a lifelong commitment to conservation.

Today, that journey has led him to Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy, where he is helping protect one of the world’s rarest animals: the Mountain Bongo.

Behind every conservation success story are dedicated people who choose to turn concern into action. We are proud to have passionate individuals like Mohammed working to secure a future for the Mountain Bongo and and Kenya’s natural heritage.

Happy World Bongo Day!

More than a day on the calendar, this is a moment to reflect on the progress made over the years to save this species, and how committed we remain to its recovery and future in the wild.

This journey would not have been possible without the support of our partners, and the incredible work of our team members.

Join us today and tomorrow at the Hub Karen, where our team will be engaging the public to educate, share, and help people learn more about our shared responsibility to protect the mountain bongo, our Kenya’s heritage.

See you there.

Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy, The Hub Karen, Chapa Copy, and TonyWild Foundation are proud to present a special photo exhibition celebrating these incredible animals.

Settling into a new environment takes time and patience, and our team has been there every step of the way.

Christine and Kibet continue to play an important role in helping the new mountain bongos adjust to their new home, from carefully preparing their food to closely monitoring their feeding and daily routines.

It’s the small, consistent moments of care that help the bongos feel safe, comfortable, and slowly more familiar with their surroundings.

And so far, they’re settling in well; something we’re incredibly happy to see.

You might be surprised to see how much Amin Selen Reggie has grown.

Just a short time ago, he was small enough to fit in our arms. Today, Amin has grown into a healthy lion cub and has now been moved into a larger enclosure in the Big Cats section.

Watching Amin grow has been deeply emotional for all of us. This progress is only possible because of your unwavering support and donations.

Plan your visit and donate to support Amin’s ongoing care.

Protected today. Wild tomorrow.

Endangered Species Day is not just a date on the calendar, but a meaningful moment for us to reflect on what it truly takes to protect and save a critically endangered species.

Over the years, this journey has been filled with early mornings, long days, challenges, and the small victories that keep us going. Recently, welcoming the four new male bongos into our conservancy was not only emotional, but also a renewed sense of hope and an important step toward accelerating the incredible work already underway through our breeding and rewilding programme.

Today, we celebrate the people, partners, and conservation teams who continue to show up every single day to give the mountain bongo a fighting chance.
