Led by our CEO, LCA paid a courtesy call to Chuka University following a request for partnership and collaboration on conservation, research, training, and environmental sustainability initiatives.
During the engagement, the LCA team shared insights on our membership network, the ecological value of the Laikipia landscape, and our collective landscape approach that brings members together to drive sustainable conservation and improve community livelihoods.
The discussions explored several potential areas of collaboration, including joint research, resource mobilization, student internships and attachments, training and capacity building, conferences and symposiums, joint publications, environmental restoration projects, exchange programmes, and tourism collaboration. The immediate action point is to develop a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will guide and formalize the collaboration between the two institutions.
We were honoured to be hosted by Prof. Gilbert Mbaka Nduru, PhD, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics, Research and Student Affairs), Dr. Jafford N. Rithaa, PhD, Dean, Faculty of Environmental Studies and Resources Development, alongside senior faculty staff.
Together, we look forward to strengthening partnerships that advance conservation, research, education, and sustainable community development.

Stakeholder Engagement Meeting | GEF-8 Global Wildlife Program
Today, LCA together with Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Association (KWCA), Conservation International (the GEF Agency), State Department for Wildlife, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), and the Wildlife Research and Training Institute (WRTI); consortium partners implementing the GEF-8 Global Wildlife Program in Kenya convened stakeholders for the project:
“Advancing Human-Wildlife Conflict Management Effectiveness in Kenya through an Integrated Approach” (Sept 2025 – Aug 2030).
The meeting focused on introducing the 5-year project to targeted conservancies and stakeholders, presenting planned interventions, and supporting the establishment of inclusive landscape-level multi-stakeholder coordination groups.
LCA is leading implementation of Components 1 and 3 in our community conservancies and the Meru landscape (Nchoroiboro, Kandebene, and Kiengu).
Key focus areas and interventions of this project include:
i. Strengthening institutional capacity for Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC) management through IMET, SAGE, governance, leadership, and conservancy management trainings
ii. Supporting community-led conservation, governance, and inclusive coordination structures across the landscapes
iii. Enhancing ecosystem restoration and landscape connectivity through rehabilitation of water catchment areas, and the Naibunga corridor fence
iv. Strengthening HWC mitigation through HEC toolkits, predator deterrent systems, predator-proof bomas, and community ranger bases in hotspot areas
v. Improving water access and climate resilience through water pans, boreholes, and water management committees
vi. Promoting inclusive wildlife economies and sustainable livelihoods through women and youth landscape forums and community-led enterprises.
vii. Strengthening conservation technology, monitoring, and coordination systems through EarthRanger and complementary systems

Beyond your experience as a tourist in Laikipia, you are playing a key role in driving and sustaining conservation – you are contributing to improving people’s livelihoods, ecosystem restoration and key conservancy operations.
Tourism in Laikipia conservancies continues to demonstrate that both people and nature benefit, when conservation and tourism work together. For this purpose, we continue to invest in training to understand the evolving market needs and how to better position products that serve this purpose.
In partnership with Steri Tours, we joined Shulmai Community Conservancy and Naibunga UPPER Community Conservancy in a training, focusing on understanding tourism product frameworks and packaging everyday community life (culture, conservation, lifestyle) as a tourism experience.
As we continue refining these experiences into market-ready products, we will strengthen tourism as a key resource tool for conservation, community empowerment, and long-term sustainability for the Laikipia landscape.

Efforts to manage Opuntia stricta across Mayianat, Shulmai, and Naibunga Upper Conservancies continue to scale through integrated control techniques, that combine biological control with manual removal.
In partnership with The Nature Conservancy in Africa, we are constructing two greenhouses (cochineal rearing chambers) in MAYIANAT COMMUNITY CONSERVANCY and Shulmai Community Conservancy , to expand local production of cochineal, a natural and highly effective biological control bug. At the same time, capacity is being enhanced in six existing greenhouses in Naibunga UPPER Community Conservancy through regular, field-based propagation activities across Morupusi, Munishoi, and Ilpolei community lands.
This coordinated efforts ensure a steady supply and distribution of cochineal, while reinforcing ongoing manual clearing efforts within the same landscape—creating a complementary, multi-pronged approach for more sustainable and long-term management of Opuntia stricta.
