Hugafo-K joined the Sengwer community in Embobut Forest to express solidarity as over 2,500 families face the threat of eviction from their ancestral land. Community members continue to report arrests, intimidation, and coercion into signing documents they did not understand raising serious concerns about free, prior and informed consent.
Forced evictions do not only take away homes; they disrupt livelihoods, children's education, culture, and the identity of Indigenous communities who have protected these forests for generations.
We stand with the Sengwer in calling for the immediate withdrawal of the eviction notice and for a rights-based approach that respects Indigenous Peoples' land rights, dignity, and voices.

Hunter Gatherer Forumโ€“Kenya (HUGAFO-K) stood with the Sengwer community in Embobut Forest as they face the threat of eviction from their ancestral land. Beyond the eviction notice, community members report frequent arrests and intimidation, including being pressured to sign documents they could not read or understand documents that were later found to state they had voluntarily agreed to leave their homes.
The Sengwer are calling for the immediate withdrawal of the eviction notice and for respect for their land and human rights. Indigenous Peoples deserve justice, dignity, and meaningful dialogue not forced evictions.

Hunter Gatherers Forum-Kenya (HUGAFO-K) has called on the Government to immediately halt the planned forced evictions of the Sengwer community from Embobut Forest, end arrests and intimidation, engage in genuine dialogue, and adopt rights-based, community-led conservation approaches that recognise Indigenous Peoples as partners in forest conservation.

Standing in Solidarity with the Sengwer Community of Embobut Forest

HUNTER GATHERERS FORUM KENYA (HUGAFO) joined the Sengwer community in Embobut Forest in a peaceful act of solidarity, reaffirming that conservation must never come at the expense of human rights.

The recently issued eviction notices have once again placed thousands of Sengwer families at risk of displacement, despite years of documented human rights concerns associated with forced evictions. Past evictions have resulted in the destruction of homes, loss of livelihoods, disruption of children's education, trauma, arrests and prolonged suffering for Indigenous families who have lived in and cared for these forests for generations.

As Indigenous Peoples, the Sengwer have repeatedly expressed their commitment to protecting the forest through community-led conservation. Lasting conservation cannot be achieved through fear, violence or displacement. It requires meaningful dialogue, respect for Indigenous land rights and recognition of Indigenous knowledge as an essential part of sustainable forest management.

HUGAFO calls upon the Government of Kenya, the Kenya Forest Service, the Ministry of Environment, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, Parliament, the National Land Commission, development partners and all relevant human rights institutions to:

Immediately halt any forced evictions in Embobut Forest.

Prioritise dialogue and rights-based conservation approaches.

Respect and protect the constitutional and internationally recognised rights of the Sengwer people.

Ensure that conservation policies do not continue to inflict suffering on Indigenous communities.

Protecting forests and protecting Indigenous Peoples are complementary goals not competing ones. Kenya can demonstrate that conservation and human rights can coexist through inclusive, just and community-led solutions.

Every child deserves hope, opportunity, and a brighter future.
This Day of the African Child, HUGAFO-K, OPDP, and the Rani Ramchandani Foundation were honored to celebrate with the learners of Kosabei Primary School in Nandi County. Through the distribution of food, school shoes, and learning materials, we shared smiles, hope, and reminded every child that they matter.
Together, we can continue creating opportunities for Indigenous children to learn, grow, and thrive.

We were honoured to host the President, Vice President, and Country Coordinator of AJWS for a field visit to Longoman Forest, where they witnessed firsthand the remarkable progress in forest restoration made possible through their partnership OPDP.
In 2016, AJWS invested in the rehabilitation of this forest. Today, that vision has grown into more than 50 hectares of restored indigenous forest, bringing back biodiversity, protecting vital medicinal tree species, and strengthening the role of Indigenous communities as custodians of nature.
This achievement has been made possible through the collective efforts of the Ogiek community, OPDP, HUGAFO, the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), the Community Forest Association (CFA), community scouts and rangers, and all partners committed to environmental conservation and Indigenous rights.
The visit was a powerful reminder that when Indigenous knowledge, community leadership, and long-term partnerships come together, forests thrive, livelihoods improve, and future generations benefit.
We sincerely thank AJWS for their support and for walking this journey with us. Together, we continue to restore forests, protect Indigenous heritage, and build a more sustainable future.
