On the 23rd 5-Alive was pleased to collaborate with FAWS org during a community engagement in Gilgil.

Together, we held meaningful discussions on HIV treatment adherence, the link between HIV and tuberculosis, psychosocial support for parents and caregivers of children living with HIV, the importance of Social Health Authority (SHA) registration, and strengthening community support groups through regular monthly meetings.

We appreciate FAWS for the partnership and continued commitment to empowering communities with knowledge, support, and hope. Together, we are building healthier families and stronger communities.

We're winding down the week in our LDA 2025 cohort highlight series by sharing the story of Teddy Mwangi - the founder of 5 ALIVE Development CBO based in Nakuru, Kenya.

Teddy’s journey, marked by resilience and determination, began in 2010 when financial hardship compelled him to leave home in search of opportunity. Facing the harsh realities of Nairobi as a young man, he turned to s*x work—not by choice, but by circumstance—to finance his education. This period was fraught with danger, isolation, and a profound emotional toll.

In 2016, a pivotal moment changed Teddy’s life forever. After being publicly humiliated and denied STI treatment at a government hospital, he experienced firsthand the weaponization of healthcare against marginalized individuals. This moment of personal injustice, coupled with witnessing similar discrimination faced by friends and community members, ignited an unshakeable resolve within him.

Determined to ensure that others would not suffer in silence, he founded 5-Alive, establishing a safe space that offers access to care, community, and dignity. Today, Teddy leads a transformative movement that is changing lives, challenging systemic injustices, and affirming that no one should be denied health or humanity for simply being who they are.

Men Cry Too: A Father's Day Reflection 💙

As we celebrate Father's Day tomorrow, let us remember that fathers, brothers, sons, husbands, and men everywhere carry burdens that are often unseen.

For generations, society has told men to "be strong," "man up," and "never cry." But strength is not the absence of emotion. Strength is having the courage to acknowledge pain, seek support, and express feelings when life becomes overwhelming.

Men have emotions. Men experience stress, anxiety, grief, disappointment, and loneliness. Men cry too—and there is nothing weak about it.

This Father's Day, let us create spaces where men feel safe to speak, heal, and ask for help without fear of judgment. A healthy society is one where everyone, regardless of gender, can openly care for their mental well-being.

To every father and father figure: thank you for your sacrifices, love, and resilience. May you also find the freedom to rest, heal, and be heard.

💙 Check on the men in your life. 💙 Listen without judgment. 💙 Encourage conversations about mental health. 💙 Remind every man that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

💔 One act of discrimination sparked a movement.

While working in a hospital in Nakuru, Kenya, our Founder, Teddy Mwangi, witnessed and experienced the stigma LGBTQIA+ people face when seeking healthcare. Rather than stay silent, he took action.

In 2020, 5ALIVE Development Community Based Organization was born.

Today, 5ALIVE has supported over 472 LGBTQIA+ individuals facing stigma, discrimination, and barriers to healthcare through HIV support, psychosocial services, human rights advocacy, and community empowerment.

But many more people still need help.

From Stigma to Hope: The Story Behind 5ALIVE
What would you do if you were denied dignity while seeking healthcare?
For our Founder, Teddy Mwangi, that moment became the beginning of a movement.
While working in a hospital in Nakuru, Kenya, Teddy witnessed and personally experienced discrimination linked to his s*xual orientation. The stigma faced by LGBTQIA+ people seeking healthcare was not just a statistic—it was a daily reality. Instead of remaining silent, he decided to act.
In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, a small support group was formed to help marginalized people living with HIV access care and support. That initiative grew into 5ALIVE Development Community Based Organization, a grassroots, community-led organization dedicated to ensuring that LGBTQIA+ persons, young mothers, and other vulnerable communities can access healthcare, dignity, and opportunity without fear.
Today, 5ALIVE has supported 472 LGBTQIA+ individuals facing stigma, discrimination, exclusion, and barriers to healthcare. Through advocacy, psychosocial support, community outreach, HIV awareness, economic empowerment, and human rights programs, we continue to restore hope where it is needed most.
Every day, we meet young people who have been rejected by their families, denied services, or left behind by systems that should protect them. Yet every day, we also witness resilience, courage, and transformation.
But the need is greater than our resources.

5ALIVE Development Community Based Organization was founded with a simple but powerful vision: to ensure that vulnerable and marginalized communities have access to dignity, opportunity, and support.

What started as a community-driven effort has grown into an organization working to advance human rights, support women and marginalized populations affected by HIV, provide psychosocial support, strengthen community systems, and create pathways for sustainable development.
