We are now officially a member of ** **, the global pro bono legal network of the ** **.

This partnership marks a significant step in strengthening our institutional capacity and long-term sustainability. With ** ’s** access to pro bono legal support from ** **, we are strengthening our governance, including our HR policies, strategic planning, and organizational systems.

For us, this is more than just legal support — it is about building a stronger, more accountable, and funder-ready organization. It enhances our ability to operate with transparency, credibility, and compliance as we grow.

Importantly, this also strengthens how we serve our communities. As we continue working with youth, women, and LGBTQIA+ communities affected by HIV, and responding to critical issues such as gender-based violence — including r**e, defilement, and other forms of abuse — access to legal expertise ensures we are better equipped to respond ethically, safely, and effectively.

This milestone positions ** ** to deepen impact while building stronger partnerships with like-minded organizations and supporters.

For many grassroots organizations, the journey from being findable to becoming fundable is not easy. Often the communities doing the most important work are the least visible and the least resourced.

At 5ALIVE Development Community Based Organization, we continue to show up every day for the communities we serve—advancing LGBTQIA+ rights, supporting women and marginalized communities affected by HIV, and strengthening community-led systems so that no one is left behind.

We know that impact does not always come with visibility or funding, but our commitment to dignity, inclusion, and community remains stronger than the challenges we face.

EVERY SUCCESS HAS A STORY

We're winding down the week in our LDA 2025 cohort highlight series by sharing the story of Teddy Mwangi - the founder of 5 ALIVE Development CBO based in Nakuru, Kenya.

Teddy’s journey, marked by resilience and determination, began in 2010 when financial hardship compelled him to leave home in search of opportunity. Facing the harsh realities of Nairobi as a young man, he turned to s*x work—not by choice, but by circumstance—to finance his education. This period was fraught with danger, isolation, and a profound emotional toll.

In 2016, a pivotal moment changed Teddy’s life forever. After being publicly humiliated and denied STI treatment at a government hospital, he experienced firsthand the weaponization of healthcare against marginalized individuals. This moment of personal injustice, coupled with witnessing similar discrimination faced by friends and community members, ignited an unshakeable resolve within him.

Determined to ensure that others would not suffer in silence, he founded 5-Alive, establishing a safe space that offers access to care, community, and dignity. Today, Teddy leads a transformative movement that is changing lives, challenging systemic injustices, and affirming that no one should be denied health or humanity for simply being who they are.
