Earlier this week, WSPAK held its National Executive Council elections, marking the beginning of a new leadership term for the Association.

On 28th May 2026, 16 girls went to school and never came home.

We are deeply saddened and troubled by this devastating tragedy at Utumishi Girls Academy. As safety professionals, we carry a particular weight in moments like this — because we know, with absolute certainty, that this did not have to happen.

These were not just students. They were daughters, sisters, and friends — young lives full of dreams and promise, taken far too soon. To their families, their teachers, and their school community, WSPAK extends its most sincere and heartfelt condolences. We grieve with you.

But grief, without action, is not enough. It has never been enough.

WSPAK has released an official statement calling on the Government, school boards, and all relevant stakeholders to take immediate and decisive action on fire safety across Kenya's learning institutions. The legislation exists. The guidelines exist. What has been missing is the will to enforce them — and that has to change.

We owe it to these 16 girls. We owe it to every child still sitting in a classroom across this country.
