Youth Voices Shaping Conservation Policy

The voice of Lamu and Kenya's youth was represented at the National Conservancies Leaders Policy Conference 2026 in Nairobi through our Cabinet Member for Blue Economy, Environment and Climate Action, Hon. Mohamed Shali Mohamed, in his capacity as Chairperson of the National Conservancies Youth Forum and a member of the National Conservancies Council.

Together with youth representatives from conservancy landscapes across Kenya, he joined conservancy leaders, policymakers, government agencies, and development partners to discuss key issues shaping the future of conservation and natural resource governance. Discussions focused on the Wildlife Act Review, County Conservation Laws, the Integrated Ecosystem-Based Natural Resources Management Policy, human rights in conservancies, and sustainable financing through the Kenya Conservancies Fund.

The engagement underscored the importance of meaningful youth, women and community participation in policy development, governance, and decision-making, while strengthening collaboration between communities, conservancies, and other stakeholders to deliver lasting benefits for both people and nature.

Protecting Our Environment, Empowering Our Future!

Hon. Abdifatah Haji, Youth MP for Hindi Ward, and Hon. Aisha Said, CS for Tourism and Culture, joined the Lamu Universities and Colleges Students Association (LUCSA), in partnership with Mokowe Beach Management Unit (BMU) and ZAMAFA Investment, for a cleanup exercise at Mokowe Jetty—the main gateway for visitors and tourists travelling to Lamu by road.

The initiative demonstrated the power of youth leadership, community partnership, and environmental stewardship in preserving the beauty and cleanliness of our coastal environment. By keeping our entry points clean and welcoming, we not only protect marine ecosystems but also strengthen Lamu's image as a leading tourism destination.

Following the cleanup, participants toured the nearly completed Mokowe Fish Landing Site, a transformative project set to revolutionize the local fisheries sector. The facility will feature a modern fish processing plant, fish market, and cold storage units that will improve fish handling, reduce post-harvest losses, and expand market access for local fishermen across Kenya.

The project is expected to unlock numerous economic opportunities for the people of Lamu, particularly the youth, through employment in administration, operations, logistics, and value-addition activities. It represents a significant investment in sustainable livelihoods, food security, and the growth of the blue economy.

To crown the day, participants engaged in a mangrove planting exercise, reaffirming their commitment to climate action, coastal resilience, and the protection of Lamu's unique marine ecosystem. Mangroves play a critical role in protecting shorelines, supporting marine biodiversity, and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

Together, we are building a cleaner, greener, and more prosperous Lamu for present and future generations.

In commemoration of World Environment Day 2026, the leadership of the Lamu Youth Assembly, led by H.E. Nahida Kassim, Deputy President Fredrick Mwaganje, Cabinet Members, and Honorable MPs, joined leaders from the National and County Governments, Civil Society Organizations, and members of the community at Hindi Comprehensive School to champion environmental conservation through tree planting and a beach clean-up exercise at Kitangani.

The event was more than just planting trees—it was about planting hope, responsibility, and a vision for a greener future. Speaking during the event, H.E. Nahida Kassim underscored the critical role trees play in combating climate change, preserving biodiversity, and safeguarding the livelihoods of future generations.

She further encouraged the establishment of an Environmental Club at Hindi Comprehensive School, emphasizing that environmental stewardship begins with educating and empowering children from an early age. By nurturing young environmental champions today, we are building a generation that will protect and preserve our natural resources tomorrow.

The subsequent beach clean-up at Kitangani demonstrated the power of collective action in keeping our environment clean, healthy, and resilient. Every tree planted and every piece of waste collected symbolizes our shared commitment to a sustainable Lamu and a healthier planet.

Together, we are proving that environmental conservation is not a one-day event—it is a lifelong responsibility.

JUSTICE DELAYED IS JUSTICE DENIED.

Today, the Lamu Youth Assembly joined HAKI Africa, MUHURI, VOCAL Africa, and the people of Lamu in a peaceful demonstration to demand justice, accountability, and respect for the rule of law.

For over 12 years, the continued curfew in Lamu has had far-reaching social and economic consequences. While security remains important, court orders issued on the removal of the curfew must be respected and implemented. The prolonged restrictions have denied many young people opportunities for entrepreneurship, investment, employment, and participation in a vibrant 24-hour economy that could unlock Lamu's immense economic potential.

The voices raised today against reported police brutality, the Siyu incidents, and the continued disregard of judicial decisions reflect a collective call for justice, human dignity, and constitutionalism. No institution is above the law, and the foundation of any democratic society rests on respect for human rights and adherence to court rulings.

We commend the people of Lamu for exercising their constitutional rights peacefully and courageously. We stand in solidarity with every citizen advocating for justice, accountable governance, and sustainable economic opportunities for all.

The Lamu Youth Assembly proudly congratulates our Cabinet Member for Blue Economy, Environment and Climate Action, Hon. Mohamed Shali Mohamed, who also serves as the Chairperson of the National Conservancies Youth Forum, for championing youth voices in conservation through the presentation of the National Conservancies Youth Forum Report at the Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Association (KWCA) Annual General Meeting 2026.

His presentation highlighted the critical role of young people in conservation leadership, ecosystem restoration, climate resilience, and community-led conservation. These priorities strongly align with the Lamu Youth Assembly's commitment to promoting sustainable management of coastal and marine resources, environmental stewardship, and meaningful youth participation in decision-making.
