🎓 Celebrating Youth Empowerment in Naivasha 🎓
Yesterday members of Nyota Angavu Community Based Organization were glad to attend the graduation ceremony at ACK church, Naivasha where youth from different parts of Naivasha and Gilgil graduated with various life skills.
This program is run by K-NOTE, an empowering program dedicated to equipping vulnerable youths from humble backgrounds with skills to transform their lives.
We're especially proud that some youths from Maai mahiu were among the graduates. Seeing them take this step forward reminds us why partnership matters.
At Nyota Angavu CBO, we continue to work with organizations like K-NOTE to uplift young people and women from low-income families in Maai mahiu. Together, we're creating pathways for skills, dignity and better livelihoods.
Congratulations to all the graduates! Your future is bright, and we're honored to walk this journey with you 💙

THE AGIKUYU: Keepers of the Mountain, people of peace and craft 🇰🇪

Meet the Agikuyu - Kenya's largest Community, named after the great fig tree Mugumo and children of Gikuyu and Mumbi. From the slopes of Mt. Kenya ( Kirinyaga), they built a culture of wisdom, hard work, and beauty.

Traditional Life:
🛖 Homesteads ( Mucii): Round huts of mud and thatch. The granary Ikumbi stood tall - food security was sacred.
👗 Attire: Women wore soft goat-skin skirts Muthuru with beaded necklaces, copper coils Nyori, and ear ornaments. Men in cloaks Nguo and Colobus monkey skin.
⚒️ Craft and Tools: Clay pots Nyonjo, three-legged stools Giti, gourds Kinya, and shields Ngo for warriors.
⚔️ Warriors ( Anake): Bravery earned through service, protecting land and cattle.
👑 Rulership: Led by a council of elders Kiama Kia Athuri - Justice through wisdom, not kings.
💍 Marriage: Began with Ruracio - dowry of goats, honey and traditional beer, sealing two families.
🧑‍🦳 Women's Journey: From girl Kairitu, to initiate, to wife Mutumia, to elder Cucu - honoured at every stage.

The Agikuyu spirit: Farming the rich highlands, worshipping Ngai on Mt. Kenya, and saying "ugi na thaayu" - peace be with you.

We are Nyota Angavu Community Based Organization from Maai mahiu - proud to share our heritage with the world.

Our culture is our strength. Our past is our foundation.

WHY SOME MAA SAY "SAMBURU ARE NOT REAL MAA"
1. language: samburu speak a dialect of maa, but with rendille, borana, turkana words inside. purko and loitai say "their tongue is heavy".
2. customs: samburu keep some cush*tic ways. they circumcise girls like rendille. they sing some songs like borana. their age sets sometimes run different years from kisonko.
3. blood: everyone knows samburu took in many rendille, turkana, laikipiak, even arabs from the coast. lorokushu have rendille. lmasula have ilaikipiak. so elders say "they are mixed".
4. pride: in the iloikop wars, samburu were beaten by ilaikipiak, then rose again. some purko never forgave them for surviving and taking grass in waso. so they call them "half brothers".

WHY SAMBURU SAY "WE ARE MAA, AND WE NEVER FELL"
1. language: samburu is maa. a purko and a samburu can sit and talk without a translator. the difference is like kisonko and loitai.
2. origin: samburu call themselves lokop or loikop. their own story says they came with maasai from the north. they are children of the same grandmother.
3. customs: they have ilmurran, emanyatta, enkang, age sets, cattle culture, enkai. the bones of the culture are maa.
4. war: samburu fought ilaikipiak, fought borana, fought turkana. they held ndoto and matthews when everyone else ran. if that is not maa courage, what is?
5. blood: yes, they mixed. but show kokoo one maa section that did not mix. purko have borana. keekonyokie have kikuyu. loitai have kalenjin. "pure maa" died with the first drought.

WHAT HISTORY SAYS
1. 1700s-1800s: all maa groups called themselves iloikop. samburu were called loikop le sampurr - the iloikop of the hide bag. they were the northern guard.
2. 1870s: ilaikipiak called samburu "our small brothers". when ilaikipiak fell, samburu took many refugees. that is why lmasula have ilaikipiak blood.
3. 1900s: british split "maasai" and "samburu" on maps to rule easier. before that, no line.
4. today: linguists, elder

Thomsons Falls, Nyahururu: Where the Ewaso Narok River Takes a 74 m leap

Discovered in 1883 by Scottish geologist Joseph Thomson, this stunning waterfall was the first landmark for European explorers entering Kenya from the north.
Today it's one of Kenya's most accessible falls. Stand at the viewpoint and feel the spray. Hike to the bottom and meet playful rock hyraxes. Shop for local carvings at the craft stalls.
At Nyota Angavu CBO, we plan to bring Maai mahiu youth here to learn, paint, and dream of becoming guides. Tourism starts with knowing Kenya.

we live under mount Longonot. Our youth are jobless. we're changing that.
Rift Valley Eco-guides now start at Nyota Angavu CBO.
What is it? A youth program connecting teens and kids to earn from tourism + conservation.
We've already taken our kids to Nairobi National Park, Lake Naivasha and Longonot. Now we're turning those trips into careers.
William, 20+ and David, 20 paint Longonot, wild animals, and our forests. They have few chances to sell - so we're building a new way.
Jemima studies tourism related courses. She'll help design our first training.
Geoffrey, 9 and Paul, 10 and Naomi, 6 and Jamie, 4 explore with us. They're next in line.
Art - Training - Income - Conservation.
Pilot phase. Our vision: Train William to guide on the land they paint.
Start with one sunset tour.
