When children first arrive at Shelter Yetu from the streets, they often carry fear, grief, and experiences that are difficult to put into words. Sometimes, sitting face-to-face and answering questions can feel overwhelming.

But every child enjoys playing with LEGOs.

As children build, create, and play, they begin to feel safe, and open up naturally with counselors and teachers. The bricks can help create space for trust, connection, creativity, and healing at a pace the child can handle.

SIX CHILDREN OFF THE STREEETS

For the last one week, our street outreach officer has been on the streets, building relationships. These six boys have bravely decided to come to Shelter Yetu and begin their journey home. Please pray for them as they make their way to Shelter Yetu today. And please begin pray for their families, and for our staff who will walk beside them.

If you'd like to help support their journey home financially, please reach out.

Our 2025 Impact Report is finally ready!
💕We shook it up a bit in 2025, and the impact is PERSONALIZED care for each child and family.
🤝We aren't adding bunks in our Shelter, but our reach is BIGGER. How? We're working with Send Relief and local government to train more churches, outreach groups, and orphanages in BEST PRACTICES to reunite families here, and around the world!

Boda boda! That's a taxi in Kenya ... This young man's motorcycle taxi business is going well, thanks to your support of our Family Empowerment program! When Shelter Yetu rescued his little brother from the streets, he agreed to help support the family's reunification by using seed money to launch a microbusiness. He got his license and is delivering pupils to/from school, and is on his way to securing a full-time job. He is paying his little brother's school fees so he can be in class every day--instead of on the streets! THANK YOU for rescuing this family!

Halfway through his Family Empowerment program, this guy's 👠👡👞shoe shop is going well! 👢👠👟His profit is paying rent for his business, and for the home he shares with his mother and little brother, who was at imminent risk of living on the streets. He is also supporting school fees for his brother, now enrolled in grade 7. 👏THANK YOU for supporting Shelter Yetu's Family Empowerment program, which is giving these families a chance to escape poverty and stay TOGETHER. 👏

This guy is back home and his mom is working hard in the grocery kiosk she started. She worked so hard on her business plan with her coach and spent her seed money strategically! She is:
🌟bringing in a small profit each day
🌟feeding her children more times per day
🌟making small improvements to her living quarters
🌟preparing to pay school fees
We are so proud of her hard work, and thankful for YOU for rescuing this boy and empowering his family to THRIVE.

Recently, 11 Shelter Yetu boys attended the YMCA children's art event! They had fun with educational games AND learned ways to express their talents through dancing, painting, and reciting memory verses. These enrichment experiences are so valuable... AND Shelter Yetu staff got to visit with other children's advocacy groups interested in Shelter's family-based model.

Warning: difficult content

In our communications, we focus a lot on the victories. Children who choose a new life, who leave the streets.
Families restored.
Relationships healed.
Mothers and and fathers empowered to care for their children.

But there is another side to the story. Every night in Kenya, tens of thousands of children are sleeping in the alleyways and gutters. They are taking refuge under highway underpasses, and in front of supermarkets after closing time.

Recently we received a call from a community member here in Naivasha. A security guard for a local company had beaten a number of street children he suspected of stealing a cell phone. One of the children was treated at the local hospital for a broken arm.

Our street officer immediately went to the site to conduct an emergency rescue. Unfortunately, most of the children had already fled. Others were afraid to leave the streets. This morning we were able to rescue one of the boys.

Tonight, M* will sleep in a warm bed. He will have a hot meal, a shower. Safe adults who will care for him. His journey home is still long, and difficult. He has many scars that will take years to heal. But he has taken the first step, and he is safe.

But other children are still on the streets. They are not safe.

This work is difficult. And we need more monthly partners to sustain it. Please reach out if you’re willing to join us.

Let's peek into a Social Worker's notebook👀: "On 6th January, I visited (this former Shelter Yetu resident). The boy was enrolled in Grade One in the final term of last year's education calendar. He registered a ✨sterling performance ✨ as he topped in his class. This year, he was promoted to the Second Grade. His class teacher complemented the boy's 👍good behavior, 👍school attendance, 👍punctuality and 👍outstanding performance as he is meeting the academic expectations, we agreed ... he can be promoted to the 3rd Grade so as to catch up academically with his peers." (Photo released with permission, emojis added for fun 🙂.) THANK YOU for saving this young man from street life!
