Three years ago, Kilifi County took an important step towards strengthening emergency medical care, and we are proud to have been part of that journey from the beginning. 🚑

Before the establishment of the county dispatch centre, ambulance coordination was fragmented, making it harder to efficiently coordinate and track emergency response.

Through our partnership with Kilifi Department of Health and Sanitation Services and Kilifi County Government, with support from Malteser International, we supported the establishment of a central emergency dispatch system through Ambulensi, bringing ambulance coordination into one place and strengthening the capacity of dispatchers and ambulance teams.

Three years on, Kilifi County EMS has helped save and evacuate more than 10,000 people, connecting communities to emergency medical care when it matters most.

🚑 A coordinated emergency response system saves time when every second counts.

Since its launch in January, the Ambulance Dispatch Centre has continued to strengthen emergency response through a 24/7 coordinated dispatch service, connecting the public to ambulance services through the toll-free number.

A functional dispatch centre is more than a place that receives calls. It brings coordination and accountability to ambulance response, helping ensure emergency calls translate into timely action.

Through Ambulensi, Emergency Medicine Kenya Foundation platform, we are working with counties to build stronger, connected public ambulance systems that meet local needs while strengthening emergency medical services across Kenya.

We commend the Mombasa County Government for providing this vital public service to it's people.

🚑 Proud to see the impact of Ambulensi in Migori County highlighted in this article.

Emergency medical care is time-sensitive. For too long, ambulance referrals have depended on fragmented phone calls, limited visibility of available ambulances, and weak coordination between facilities and responders. In an emergency, every delay matters.

Through our partnership with the Migori County Government, the Emergency Medicine Kenya Foundation has supported the establishment of a centralised emergency dispatch centre powered by Ambulensi, our digital ambulance dispatch and fleet management platform.

Today, the system is helping Migori County dispatch ambulances faster, coordinate referrals, track fleet performance, support pre-arrival care, and improve emergency response through real-time data. Most importantly, the county team reports that referral delays are reducing.

Technology alone will not solve every challenge facing emergency care. Ambulance availability, maintenance, staffing, road infrastructure, and community awareness remain critical. But when technology is embedded within a coordinated emergency healthcare system, it can help make every available resource work better.

This is what Ambulensi was built to do: help governments coordinate emergency medical services more efficiently so patients can access the right care, at the right place, at the right time.

We are grateful to the Migori County Government, the emergency care teams operating the system every day, and all our partners working with us to strengthen emergency healthcare systems across Kenya.

From a distant dream to 922.

In 2015, a single national number connecting people in Kenya to coordinated emergency medical care felt almost impossible.

On 5 August 2026 , that vision took a major step forward with the launch of the SHA 922 Lifeline and National Ambulance Dispatch Centre .

For Emergency Medicine Kenya Foundation, this milestone represents more than a phone number. It reflects more than a decade of systems change—shaping national and county policy, strengthening emergency care centres, building coordinated public ambulance services through Ambulensi, supporting emergency care financing, and helping connect the different parts of the emergency healthcare system.

But 922 is the national front door—not the whole system. Our next phase is about making that entire system work— for every patient, in every county.

Building an effective public ambulance service requires much more than ambulances. It requires strong policies, good governance, skilled EMS providers, efficient coordination, quality improvement and data-driven decision-making.

Ambulensi, developed by the Emergency Medicine Kenya Foundation (EMKF), is a holistic Emergency Medical Services (EMS) strengthening solution that empowers governments to build and sustainably manage high-quality public ambulance services.

It is exciting to see The County Government of Bomet learning from the County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet's experience in establishing and operationalizing its Emergency Dispatch Center.

County-to-county learning is essential to strengthening Emergency Medical Services across Kenya. Counties should not have to develop emergency dispatch and ambulance coordination systems in isolation. By sharing practical experience, implementation lessons, and tested approaches, they can build stronger systems faster, reduce duplication, and make better use of limited resources.

It is equally important that these systems are interoperable. Dispatch centres, ambulances, public emergency departments, and national agencies must be able to communicate and coordinate seamlessly, particularly when emergencies and patient referrals cross county boundaries.

This is why we designed Ambulensi as a shared, scalable, and interoperable platform that can support all 47 counties while allowing each county to tailor its emergency medical services to its local needs, priorities, and existing systems.

We commend County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet for sharing its experience and look forward to supporting The County Government of Bomet as it strengthens its emergency response system.

🚑 Marsabit County has taken an important step toward strengthening and sustaining its emergency healthcare services.

The launch of the County Emergency Medical Services and Emergency Medical Care policy documents, together with the Emergency Dispatch Centre, provides a stronger foundation for coordinated emergency response across the county.

These policy documents are critical because they help embed emergency healthcare services within county systems — supporting planning, governance, ambulance coordination, referral pathways, facility readiness, and long-term sustainability.

Developed through collaboration between the County Government of Marsabit, Malteser International, and Emergency Medicine Kenya Foundation, this milestone reflects what is possible when counties and partners work together to build stronger emergency healthcare systems to save lives.

🚑 Stronger coordination means more lives saved.

Before the launch of the County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet Emergency Dispatch Center, emergency response in the county faced significant delays. Calls were not centrally coordinated, ambulances were inconsistently deployed, and health facilities were not always prepared to receive patients.

Three months after the launch, early progress is clear.

By connecting emergency calls, dispatch teams, ambulances, and health facilities into one coordinated system, response times are improving and care is becoming more reliable when it matters most.

This is what Emergency Medical Services should look like: coordinated, efficient, and patient-centered.

Through Ambulensi, Emergency Medicine Kenya Foundation is working with county governments to strengthen public ambulance services across Kenya to save lives.

Since we started our Digitised county Ambulance Dispatch centre we have reduced our average response time from 7.3 hrs in April, 2.7 Hours in may to 2 hours in June and Cases handled increased from 93 in April,140 in May to 200 in June reflecting increased efficiency in our Ambulance response.
