CASILEP Kenya Congratulates Sr. Mary Lembo on her new appointment as a Consultors of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.

On 6 August 2026, Pope Leo XIV appointed Sr. Mary (Makamatine) Lembo as one among new Consultors of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life for the five-year term 2026–2031.

Sr. Lembo is a Togolese religious sister, Vicar General of the Sisters of St. Catherine, Virgin and Martyr, and a psychologist and psychotherapist with extensive experience in human formation and safeguarding.

We are looking for new panelists for the 2026-27 edition of The Life, starting in November. If you are interested in writing and reflecting on your experiences in religious life, we would love to hear from you.

As a panelist, you will be invited to respond to three or four questions throughout the year, with each response being about 450 words. We offer a onetime honorarium, but the true reward is the opportunity to connect with sisters from all over the world and share insights that can inspire and encourage others.

How it works:
Each month, Global Sisters Report poses a question on a topic related to religious life — spirituality, ministry, formation, leadership and more. You get to choose which questions to answer and when, making it a flexible and enriching experience.

We welcome both new voices and those who have contributed to GSR before as columnists, but if you have been a panelist, we ask that you let someone else have the experience. If you feel called to share your perspective, please consider applying.

"The instrument to make safeguarding a culture in religious life is formation," said Sr. Dr. Mary Lembo, one of the conference presenters with extensive experience in religious formation. "That's why the guidelines, the policies and the code of conduct must start with the candidate and continue throughout their religious life."

What began as a WhatsApp group has evolved into a movement connecting sisters trained in canon and civil law to support safeguarding, governance and accountability across Africa.

At the African Conference for Catholic Sisters Canon and Civil Lawyers, the first panel discussion explored “The Role of the Church and Consecrated Persons in Upholding Human Dignity through Effective Safeguarding Measures.”

The session was moderated by Sr. Mūmbi Kīgūtha, CPPS, and brought together Sr. Dr. Mary Lembo, Sr. Edith Koech, LSOSF, and Rev. Dr. Thomas Mushi, IMC, alongside Bishop Luis Manuel Ali Herrera, Dr. Francesco Pappalardo and Dr. Claudia Giampietro from the Pontifical Comission for the Protection of Minors.

The discussion provided an opportunity to reflect on the Church’s responsibility to uphold human dignity and strengthen safeguarding practices within religious communities, ministries, and the wider Church.

We were honored to have Dr. Francesco Pappalardo from the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors as one of the presenters at the African Conference for Catholic Sisters Canon and Civil Lawyers, held in Nairobi, Kenya.

In his presentation, “The Role of the Church and Consecrated Persons in Upholding Human Dignity through Effective Safeguarding Measures,” Pappalardo reflected on the Church’s ongoing responsibility to protect and uphold human dignity.

He noted:

“Safeguarding has not given the Church a new mission. It has transformed the way the Church understands the responsibility of carrying out the mission she has always received from Christ.”

A powerful reminder that safeguarding is not separate from the Church’s mission, but an essential expression of it.

The pre-conference dinner of the African Conference for Catholic Sisters Canon and Civil Lawyers was enriched by inspiring remarks from Rev. Msgr. Luciano Labanca, Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of the Apostolic Nunciature, Sr. Grace Komugisha, President of ACWECA, and Sr. Jane Wakahiu, LSOSF, Ph.D., Associate Vice President, Catholic Sisters Initiative at the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation.

Speaking to more than 50 Catholic Sisters lawyers from across Africa, they celebrated this historic conference as the first of its kind on the continent and encouraged the Sisters to continue being prophetic witnesses through their ministry in canon and civil law for the common good of the Church.
