Healthcare is about more than just survival; it is about dignity, quality of life, and ensuring that no patient feels forgotten in the shadows of a diagnosis.

Recently, the Kenya Ostomy Association had the distinct privilege and honor of being invited to the official launch of Care Hub Cancer Health. It was a milestone event celebrating advancement in Kenya’s healthcare ecosystem. But for us, this day became so much more than an invitation to sit in the audience. We were given a vital, dedicated platform to do what we do best: step up, reach out, and directly serve our community.

Too often, the unique challenges of living with a stoma are left out of mainstream health conversations. In Kenya, navigating life as an ostomate comes with immense hurdles from the heavy stigma surrounding bowel and urinary diversions to the staggering, often prohibitive cost of daily medical appliances.

We didn’t just show up to document a launch. We brought a fully functional support clinic right into the heart of the event.

🌟 The Impact in Numbers & Stories
During the launch, our dedicated team was able to:

Conduct 22 Personalized Consultations: We sat down face-to-face with 22 individuals, listening to their stories, answering their questions, and offering the specialized clinical counseling and emotional support that is so deeply needed but rarely accessible.

Distribute Critical Ostomy Supplies: Access to standard appliances is a daily struggle for local ostomates. Thanks to this platform, we were able to distribute essential ostomy bags directly into the hands of those who need them most providing immediate relief and a restored sense of security.

🤝 Why This Partnership Matters
This collaboration marks a massive, strategic shift in how we approach oncology and post-surgical care. By integrating specialized stoma care directly into mainstream cancer health services, we are finally breaking down the walls of isolation. We are showing the medical community and the public alike that comprehensive cancer care must include robust, long-term support for ostomates.

We extend our deepest, most sincere gratitude to the leadership and visionary team at Care Hub Cancer Health. Thank you for opening your doors, giving us a voice, and creating a space where health advocacy met real, tangible community impact.

To our incredible team, our partners, and the resilient ostomates who spent the day with us thank you for your trust, your strength, and your unwavering support. This is just the beginning of a beautiful journey toward accessible, inclusive, and dignified healthcare for all Kenyans.

“Until every ostomate can live a life of dignity, our work continues.” 🕊️

see moments of connection, consultation, and community from this incredible day.

New users are what keep the cycle going, often without even realizing it.

Right now, 2.5% of adolescents in Kenya are using to***co and ni****ne products, raising serious concerns about how young people are being targeted.

We need to speak up and push for stronger protections for our youth. Their health and future must come first.

Behind every bright smile and every step forward for a stoma warrior, there is a dedicated team working to make life manageable, comfortable, and dignified.

Our Director, Madam Sally Kwenda, was out in the community doing what she does best: distributing life-changing ostomy supplies, providing essential stoma care education, and ensuring our members have the tools they need to live without fear.

To many, these may look like simple medical items. But to a person living with a stoma, proper ostomy bags, skin barriers, and closures mean everything. They mean the freedom to go to work, attend school, and move through life with confidence. From teaching the precision of stoma measurement to providing hands-on clinical guidance, KOA remains committed to breaking the stigma and lifting the burden of isolation.

We are incredibly grateful to our partners and donors who make these community outreaches possible. Together, we are restoring dignity, one patient at a time. đź’™

The Stoma Haven of the Kenya Ostomy Association was filled with joy as survivors and caregivers gathered to celebrate the Director of the KOA. The highlight of the day was a beautiful exchange of gifts, each representing the deep respect and unity within our community.

To honor the Director’s dedicated leadership, the visiting teams presented tokens of appreciation that spoke louder than words:

Magdaline Muaye and the team presented vibrant African Ankara fabrics, celebrating our shared heritage through color and culture.

Josephine Leshao of showcased the intricate beauty of Maasai Artistry, a testament to the strength of our traditions.

The Self-Care Team crowned the celebration with a deeply personal "Sally Kwenda Portrait"; a tribute to the resilience and grace the Director embodies every day.

These gifts were more than just items; they were symbols of the collective bond shared by these organizations. It was a day of profound appreciation, leaving everyone inspired by the spirit of generosity and the power of coming together to honor those who lead us.

Self-care takes on a whole new meaning when we do it together. On April 2nd, a truly special event unfolded as survivors and caregivers from various organizations and groups across the country journeyed to the Kenya Ostomy Association Center in Kisamis, Kajiado County.

Meeting at this serene center was more than just a gathering; it was a powerful act of unity. By bringing together different organizations under one roof, we reminded each other that we are part of one large, resilient family. In the cancer community, self-care is the bridge that moves us from merely surviving to truly thriving and that bridge is strongest when we build it together.

Surrounded by the peaceful hills of Kajiado, we set aside our roles to simply be ourselves. We shared stories that required no explanation, found healing in collective laughter, and bonded in a way that only those on this journey truly understand.

The heart of the day was a beautiful celebration for the Director of the Kenya Ostomy Association. It was incredibly moving to see survivors and caregivers from every represented group join together to appreciate the leadership and vision that makes our mission possible. Taking a moment to honor the hands that guide us was the perfect way to celebrate the strength of our community.

We left the Kisamis Center with renewed spirits, reminded that while our individual paths may differ, we never walk them in isolation. When we unite, we find the strength to keep moving forward together. 💙💪

During a recent home visitation, the Kenya Ostomy Association (KOA) had the privilege of meeting Adhiambo Awendo . Her story is a profound reminder of the immense strength found within our community and the steep challenges many survivors face daily.

The Battle Against Cancer
Awendo’s life took an unexpected turn in 2019 when she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She faced the diagnosis head-on, undergoing intensive treatment that included radiotherapy and six cycles of chemotherapy at the HCG Cancer Care Centre.

While the treatment was life-saving, it came with lasting physical complications. Awendo developed a fistula as a result of the radiotherapy, which led to her current need for a colostomy and a nephrostomy tube to drain urine from the kidneys.

The Weight of Caregiving and Sacrifice
Awendo’s resilience is not just personal it is for her entire family. She is the mother of seven children and the primary caregiver for her husband, who is blind. Despite her own health struggles, she remains the pillar of her household.

The financial toll of her journey has been staggering. To afford her medical care at MP Shah Hospital, the family had to make the difficult decision to sell their land for 2 million KES. Today, without a job and with significant family responsibilities, the daily cost of living remains a heavy burden.

Before joining the KOA family, Adhiambo was trapped in a cycle of high costs and low-quality care. She was forced to spend 1,200 KES for every 20 colostomy bags. These supplies were not only expensive for a woman with no steady income, but they were also poor-quality, leading to leaks, skin irritation, and constant discomfort.

Today, she no longer has to struggle with substandard supplies that fail her. She now receives high-quality, medical-grade ostomy bags directly from the Kenya Ostomy Association. This shift has restored her dignity and provided the security she needs to focus on what matters most, her family.

Survival does not mark the end of the struggle, it merely changes its shape.

At the Kenya Ostomy Association, we see the truth in these words every day. We are proud to see our very own Salome Agallo collaborating on the CARE-CRC study with Strathmore University. This research is vital because it looks beyond the clinical data to the real-life challenges survivors face from the financial burden to the daily reality of life after treatment.

Together, we are working to ensure that no survivor has to navigate this journey without dignity and support.

The heart of every policy is a human story.

During the recent CARE-CRC dissemination workshop in Nairobi, the Kenya Ostomy Association (KOA) stood alongside survivors, caregivers, and partners to ensure that lived experiences drive the future of cancer care.

These portraits capture the focus and dedication of our community as we reviewed the draft Kenya Colorectal Cancer Survivorship Guide. We aren't just identifying gaps; we are shaping a practical, context-responsive tool that reflects the reality of survivorship in Kenya.

Together, we are moving from evidence to action.
