Over 30 lives lost in the Chesongoch, Elgeyo Marakwet landslide could have been saved if early warning systems were in place.
While heavy rains triggered the tragedy, the scale of destruction shows how climate change, deforestation, and unsafe settlement on fragile slopes turn natural hazards into human disasters.
This must be our national wake-up call. The government must treat climate change as a national emergency — investing more in prevention, preparedness, and protection to ensure such tragedies never happen again.
Kenya cannot afford to treat disasters like this as isolated events. They are warning signs demanding urgent, sustained climate action.
As the Kenya Red Cross, World Vision Kenya, and government agencies lead rescue and recovery efforts, we must act now to prevent the next tragedy:
✅ Enforce land-use and settlement policies — no more building or farming on unsafe slopes.
🌳 Restore our ecosystems — reforest degraded lands and protect vital water catchments.
📢 Strengthen early warning systems — every community must be informed, connected, and prepared.
🏠 Support safe relocation and permanent resettlement for families living in high-risk zones.
We stand in solidarity with the people of Chesongoch — with every family mourning, every child displaced, and every volunteer working tirelessly on the ground.
🇰🇪 It’s time for Kenya to rise — to rebuild not just homes, but hope, accountability, and climate resilience.
Let this not be another forgotten tragedy. Let this be Kenya’s turning point — toward a future where every life is protected, every warning is heard, and every disaster is met with preparedness and compassion.
