Transforming MEN’talities for a more equal future.
At Daraja Letu Foundation, we are proud to have attended a convening by UNESCO in amplify initiatives that challenge harmful gender norms and promote positive, inclusive masculinities. The *Transforming MEN’talities* initiative is reshaping how society understands masculinity, encouraging men and boys to embrace vulnerability, care, and equality.
In Kenya, deeply rooted expectations around dominance, emotional suppression, and economic provision continue to impact both men and women—often leading to mental health challenges, violence, and limited opportunities. These pressures are even more intense in urban informal settlements, where unemployment and marginalization shape how young men express identity.
Through research, community engagement, and youth-driven conversations, this initiative is:
✔️ Promoting mental health and psychosocial support
✔️ Advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR)
✔️ Expanding economic opportunities
✔️ Preventing gender-based violence
With rising cases of GBV and femicide, especially in urban centers like Nairobi, the urgency to act has never been greater. Engaging men and boys as allies is key to building safer, more equitable communities.
Together, we can redefine masculinity, break harmful cycles, and create a future where everyone thrives.
