HIAS Kenya

HIAS Kenya This is the OFFICIAL HIAS Kenya page. Every action we take reaffirms our commitment to keep the pathways to hope and refuge open for those in need.

HIAS Kenya is the Kenyan branch of HIAS, the international Jewish humanitarian organization that stands for a world in which displaced people find welcome, safety, and opportunity. In a time when far too many doors are closed to refugees and forcibly displaced people, HIAS stands as a steadfast beacon of hope. Founded more than 120 years ago, we champion the values of welcome, justice, empathy, pa

rtnership, courage, and resilience. We are a Jewish humanitarian organization that works in the United States and across the globe, providing vital services to refugees and asylum seekers of all backgrounds so they can rebuild their lives. With the strength of Jewish communities beside us, we not only deliver legal support, economic empowerment, and social services, we also advocate for the rights of forcibly displaced people around the world. Join us in building a future of safety, dignity, and opportunity for all.

As March comes to a close, we are reminded that the commitment to supporting women and girls, especially those in displacement, must extend far beyond Women’s Month.

At HIAS Kenya, we continue to witness how funding cuts to humanitarian aid are disproportionately impacting women and girls. Reduced access to education, healthcare, protection services, and basic needs is not just a policy issue, it is a daily reality that increases vulnerability and risks reversing hard-won progress.

Linah’s story reflects both the challenges and the resilience of women navigating displacement. It is a powerful reminder of why sustained investment in mental health, protection, and economic empowerment remains critical. We are grateful to EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid for supporting the Self Help Plus (SH+) program in Kenya, through which Linah was able to access structured psychosocial support.

As we mark the end of Women’s Month, we reaffirm our commitment to standing with women and girls, ensuring they are supported, protected, and empowered every day of the year.

Today we celebrate the strength and resilience of refugee women and girls.

On this International Women’s Day, we recognize the courage of women who continue to rebuild their lives despite displacement, uncertainty, and adversity.
Refugee women are caregivers, leaders, and changemakers within their families and communities. Their resilience reminds us of the importance of dignity, safety, and protection for all women and girls.

At HIAS Kenya, we remain committed to standing alongside refugee women and girls by supporting access to protection and safe spaces where healing and hope can begin.

Today, and every day, we celebrate their courage and amplify their voices. 🌍💜

As we mark the final day of the hashtag , we reflect on this year’s powerful theme: Ending Digital Violence Against Women and Girls.

HIAS was honored to take part in several major commemorations in Dagoretti, Westlands, Kasarani, Makadara, and Kamukunji, alongside partners, community members, and duty bearers united by a shared message: We all have a role to play in ending violence against women and girls.

Throughout the celebrations, speakers emphasized key actions that must guide us beyond these 16 days:
1️⃣ Strengthening community engagement to build awareness and protection.
2️⃣ Encouraging timely reporting, which remains the first step toward justice and safety.
3️⃣ Ensuring intentional, thorough investigations for every case.
4️⃣ Ending the normalization of GBV, both online and offline.

Additionally, several speakers sensitized attendees on safe online practices, reminding us that protection must extend into digital spaces where many forms of harm begin in the world we live in today.

These events were led by the Nairobi City County Government in collaboration with the State Department for Gender and Affirmative Action, bringing together diverse actors committed to building safer spaces for women and girls, especially in digital environments.
Today may be the last day of the campaign, but the message remains alive in our communities, our platforms, and our collective responsibility.

Refugees and migrants enrich our communities through their skills, cultures, and resilience. Yet, across the world and even here at home, xenophobia continues to show up in subtle and overt ways.

It starts with harmful stereotypes and misinformation, but it can end in exclusion, discrimination, and violence.

We all have a role to play in creating welcoming, inclusive spaces. Here are 4 ways to combat xenophobia in our workplaces, schools, and communities.

Last week, we launched our first Self-Help+ (SH⁺) group session under the MHPSS program. Participants engaged with curiosity as they learned a grounding exercise using their five senses, a simple way to return to the present when thoughts and feelings become overwhelming 🕊️.

As part of the activity, soda was used to engage the sense of taste 👅, helping participants focus on the fizz, flavor, and texture. Such practices build resilience, reduce distress, and support mental well-being.

With World Mental Health Day next week, HIAS Kenya, with valued support from EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid, remains committed to promoting refugee mental health and resilience through safe and supportive spaces.

✨ As we begin a new week, we take a moment to reflect on and stand in solidarity with refugees and asylum seekers.

In a time when humanitarian needs are growing and resources are shrinking, our colleagues at HIAS Kenya remain committed to one mission: ensuring refugees and asylum seekers find safety, dignity, and hope.

We asked our team one simple but powerful question: “Why do you do this work?” 💭

Their answers remind us that, no matter the challenges, we will continue to walk alongside the communities we serve, because everyone deserves welcome and protection.
