Are Kenyan startups and SMEs ready for Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)?
This was one of the key issues discussed last week when our Coordinator joined a panel on Circular Economy at the 4th Edition of the Nairobi Startup Summit & Awards.
Speaking during the session, Mr. Andrew Sila shed light on the Polluter Pays Principle and what it means for startups and SMEs that manufacture, import, or place products on the Kenyan market. Although EPR regulations are still relatively new, many businesses remain unaware of the compliance requirements, including registration with Nema Kenya and membership in the appropriate Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO).
For importers, compliance is particularly important, as products may face challenges at the point of entry without the required certification.
Mr. Sila further explained that while EPR models draw from global best practices, Kenya's PROs are adapting these approaches to suit local needs and realities.
The conversation highlighted the importance of creating awareness and supporting businesses on their journey towards compliance and sustainability.
