TUNGA FILM DROP! 🎬From Southern Africa to East Africa, we’re transforming classrooms with African stories made for African learners.

This week, we’re proud to announce the acquisition of the powerful film "The Imam and I," also known as "The Killing of the Imam," by Shamis.

In 1969, Imam Abdullah Haron was arrested and killed in detention under South Africa’s Terrorism Act. A leading voice against injustice during Apartheid, Imam Haron’s activism and global solidarity work placed him under the watch of the apartheid security police, ultimately costing him his life.

Blending animation, documentary, and archival footage, the film retraces the final years of his life. The story is tenderly told by his grandson, unfolding through a child’s imagination as memories are shared by those who knew, loved, and were inspired by the Imam.
A moving reflection on faith, resistance, memory, and legacy, now available for African classrooms. 👉 Discover more African films for African schools on the Tunga Afrika Platform.

TUNGA FILM DROP!🎬
We’re excited to unveil our newest acquisition from Docubox as we keep transforming learning into an exciting, interactive, and imaginative experience for schools across Africa.

New Moon by Philippa Ndisi Herrmann is a stunning meditation on spirituality, identity, and womanhood. Through textured imagery and Quranic evocations, Philippa captures the tension and beauty of embracing Islam while navigating the complexities of faith.

Lamu unfolds in poetic fragments: a man scaling fish, children splashing by the dock, a baptism, and a woman quietly questioning her path. It’s visual poetry that lingers, provokes, and invites conversation.

With this powerful addition, we’re not just expanding our library; we’re shaping minds, sparking dialogue, and bringing meaningful African stories into classrooms across Kenya.

We’re proud to mark our second year of collaborating with the Kenya National Drama & Film Festival as we continue strengthening film literacy and creative education across Kenya.

For decades, KNDFF has stood as the country’s largest national celebration of young talent, a vibrant space where culture, storytelling and education intersect. It remains one of the most important engines for discovering new voices, shaping identity, and nurturing the next generation of Kenyan creators. Being part of this national ecosystem for a second year affirms our shared commitment to building a stronger creative future.

This year, Tunga Media Afrika is expanding its contribution by training teachers in practical filmmaking skills, from story development and scripting to production, editing and film appreciation. Our goal is simple: equip teachers so they can confidently teach film, unlock student creativity and embed filmmaking meaningfully within the CBC curriculum.

We are grateful to the partners who are making this possible:
🎥

— providing full filming gear so teachers get real, hands-on production experience with professional equipment.
🎬 Film COMMISSION — for their consistent support in strengthening film education and industry linkages.
🌍 NAAM Festival — for championing cultural exchange and visibility for young filmmakers.
📘 Ministry of Education Kenya (MOE) — for embedding film within the CBC framework and empowering educators to lead this work in their schools.

Together, we are building pathways for students to see themselves as storytellers, in their classrooms, in their communities, and eventually, on national and global stages.

Celebrating Our Teachers! 🎉
Behind every powerful story we share is an educator who brings it to life in the classroom, and today, we’re shining a spotlight on one of them.

At St. Peter's Mumias Boys' High School, we’ve had the honour of partnering with the incredible Shadrack A. Mutebe, a dedicated Kiswahili and History teacher, a QASO History lead, chairperson of the school’s Teaching & Non-Teaching Welfare Association, and a seasoned Kiswahili PP2 examiner for over a decade.

Beyond the classroom, Shadrack is a true multitalented: a national-level table tennis guru, and an active contributor to music and drama festivals in modern dance and elocution.

At Tunga, we’re proud to work with educators like Shadrack who are boldly reimagining education for Africa, by Africa, using African Films as powerful learning tools in our schools.

Shukran za dhati 🙏🏾 to Shadrack and to all teachers who turn stories into transformative learning experiences. Your impact is immeasurable. 💛📚🎬

What an incredible wrap to the 2025 NBO Film Festival! 🎬 We officially launched the Tunga Media Afrika Tertiary Rollout in partnership with Filmmakers Hangout, and onboarded 56 passionate Tunga Student Ambassadors from diverse tertiary institutions across Kenya.

This vibrant community of young changemakers is helping bring African films into campuses, sparking conversations on social impact, storytelling, and identity.

The interactive session at Shalom House was a beautiful mix of learning, laughter, and inspiration, from exploring how film can drive social change, to unpacking film acquisition and impact strategies, and of course, enjoying some powerful African stories together.

We’re beyond excited to see these emerging storytellers take flight, and to keep building partnerships, stories, and creative exchanges that reshape narratives across the continent.

Huge thanks to Filmmakers Hangout for making this milestone possible. 🙌 Here’s to nurturing the next generation of storytellers and using film as a force for change! 🎥

TUNGA FILM DROP! 🎬 From Southern Africa to East Africa, we’re elevating learning experiences using African films for African learners! This week, we’re thrilled to announce our renewed acquisition of two powerful films from Rushlake Media:

🎥 SUPA MODO by Likarion Wainaina (Kenya): Meet Jo, a witty 9-year-old girl, loves films and superheroes. Battling a terminal illness, she dreams of being a superhero, and inspires other kids in the children's hospital to play out scenes from action films. One day, her mother Kathryn takes Jo back to her rural village to spend the rest of her short life with her family. Against all odds and battling the time left her, the whole village takes it upon themselves to make Jo's last wish a reality: to make a film and star in it.

🎞️ Liyana the Movie by Aaron & Amanda Kopp (Eswatini): A beautifully animated story of a brave Swazi girl embarks on a dangerous quest to rescue her young twin brothers. This animated African tale is born in the imaginations of five orphaned children in Swaziland who collaborate to tell a story of perseverance drawn from their darkest memories and brightest dreams. Their fictional character's journey is interwoven with poetic and observational documentary scenes to create a genre-defying celebration of collective storytelling

At Tunga Afrika, we use film as a mirror and a map, helping learners see themselves in stories that shape Africa’s present and future. These films are now freely accessible on Tunga Afrika for junior and senior educators, and coming soon to tertiary learners and lecturers this November!

Shorts, Shorts & Shots! 🎬 From rocking our shorts 👖, to watching bold and beautiful short films 🎥, and wrapping up the night with a few shots 🥂 — this was pure magic!

Tunga Media Afrika had an incredible time at Shorts, Shorts & Shots, part of the NBO Film Festival, in collaboration with Docubox - The East African Documentary Film Fund.

The screen came alive with unforgettable African films — Story za Njamba by David, Home by Adelle, The Incredible Sensational Fiancée of Seyi Ajayi by Abbesi, and Irabura: The Odyssey by Kambua & Isaiah Evans — each film stirring emotion, laughter, and deep reflection.

The evening also featured an inspiring Q&A session, where filmmakers shared their creative insights and audiences reflected on how each story made them feel and resonate. It was heartfelt, thought-provoking, and a true celebration of cinema and community.

Between snapping photos, sharing interviews, and laughing with friends old and new, it was a night filled with art, warmth, and connection — the very essence of why we love storytelling. 🌍❤
