The BtS Uganda convened a Country Advisory Group meeting to advance conversations on addressing gender-based inequities in the creative sector.

Supported by the Mastercard Foundation and implemented by alongside partners across Africa, the Behind the Scenes project continues to generate evidence, strengthen research capacity, and drive policy and workplace action for young female creatives in sub-Saharan Africa.

The meeting brought together key stakeholders to share project updates, discuss emerging findings, and co-create dissemination strategies. From validating key messages to mapping priority audiences and identifying effective engagement channels, the discussions were both insightful and action-oriented.

Grateful for the collective expertise and commitment in the room as we continue pushing research into meaningful impact.

From research to real influence ✨

Behind the scenes facilitated a two day training on Gender-Responsive Evidence and Policy Engagement under the Behind the Scenes project held in both Uganda and Kenya.

This experience brought together youth researchers committed to transforming evidence into compelling narratives that drive policy change, especially for young women in Africa’s creative sector.

We didn’t just learn how to present data we learned how to move it:
•Turning research into clear, persuasive policy messages
•Leveraging AI for impactful communication
• Engaging stakeholders with intention and strategy

As we push for systems that work for women, especially in underrepresented sectors, one thing is clear: evidence alone is not enough how we communicate it is everything.

And this is just the beginning.

💡How does Binti Shupavu build agency? The midline report highlights two critical processes: the "Acquisition to Application to Integration" loop and the interaction with Environmental Resistance. Girls don't just learn a theory; they practice it in safe spaces and eventually integrate those skills into actions in their broader communities.

Kenya spends less than 0.2% of GDP on early childhood services. The math is the message.

Nearly half of surveyed households earn under KES 5,000 per month yet are expected to self-finance their children’s care entirely. The globally recommended benchmark is 1% of GDP. Kenya’s gap is not marginal. It is structural, and it has consequences

Across ICRW Africa research, one aspiration emerged consistently: women want programs that help them build skills, assets, and opportunities to become self-sufficient. This aligns with a growing evidence base on “graduation programs.”

The question for policymakers is not whether this approach works it does. The question is how quickly it can be scaled.
