Baboons🐒 will want to sn**ch bags for snacks. Elephants 🐘will be happy to traverse farmlands. Buffalos🐃 will love to gore. Koalas🐨just stare innocently- almost as if they are learning from their counterparts in the wild.

Communities living close to conservancies, near wildlife corridors, or in what has for ages been animal-wildlife interfaces face the threat of constant faceoffs with wildlife.

The risks of conflict and of transmission of zoonotic disease have seen experts such as Pro Prisca Mugabe of The University of Zimbabwe dedicate their lives to studying rangelands and co-creating, with communities, interventions to reduce animal-human friction, as she explains to Peter Theuri on the Africa Science Dialogue podcast.

Prof Mizeck Chagunda wears so many hats 🎩 it could take a whole podcast to count them all. Which is part of what we shall be doing here- on The Africa Science Dialogue- asking about his experiences as a university professor, institute director, esteemed scholar, and astute researcher.

But mostly, we shall talk about how Africa and its livestock benefits from biotechnology.

Prof Mizeck Chagunda is as respected in Africa- his birthplace- as he is in Europe, testament to his brilliant CV from both places. Yet he is extremely unassuming, and engages with the grace of a man who has seen very high ups and some low downs, those that refine humans and bring out their best selves.

Prof Chagunda, who is a quantitative animal geneticist by training, has extensive expertise in tropical livestock breeding and genetics. He is a full professor in Tropical Livestock Genetics at the University of Edinburgh. He is also the director of CTLGH.

Join us this 🗓️Thursday, May 8, 2025, starting 1930hrs EAT (7:30pm) on youtube.com/watch?v=4f8ArO… as we engage Prof Chagunda on The Africa Science Dialogue.

Nutritionists oftentimes bear the brunt of misinformation and disinformation, because they have to keep extinguishing fires caused by runaway pseuds. About biotech? Even worse. Nutritionists- and other scientists- speak about their experiences here https://ow.ly/zOLY50Vvu8j and it has, clearly, not been easy. Here, they were told how to deal with this misinformation and disinformation in this ISAAA-led workshop.

Africa's population is projected to hit a staggering 2.5 billion by 2050- just a quarter century away. (2050 might look quite far away, but it is not; 25 years ago was the turn of the 21st century, which looks like the other day).
Africa will need to feed this huge population amid damaging climate change and geopolitical tensions- and other conflicts- that hamper agricultural productivity.
Agricultural biotechnology brings in a lot of potential for the continent, with key innovations ensuring food security in the future.
However, misinformation and disinformation surrounding agricultural biotechnology- and generally biosciences- slows down the rate of adoption of some of these biotechnologies, much to the detriment of the masses.
Fortunately, Africa Science Dialogue, https://afriscidialogue.org/auth/sign-up, provides answers to some of the most asked questions, and any other questions that you may have, and in great detail.
