❔ Did You Know ❔

About Crop Protection Innovations...

✍️ Kenya πŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ has a ROBUST pesticide regulatory framework.

➑️ Pest control products in Kenya are regulated by the Pest Control Products Board (PCPB), a statutory organization established under the Pest Control Products Act, Cap 346.

➑️ PCPB is mandated with regulation of importation and exportation, manufacture, distribution and use of pesticides.

➑️ All pesticides registered for use in the country undergo a rigorous risk and safety assessment prior to approval by PCPB.

➑️ Further, Kenya is signatory to key international conventions on chemical safety and conforms to international standards and best practices on pesticide use and compliance. πŸ˜‰

There is a big rift between the global north and the south. Endowment with capacities to access key genetic resources, availability of rich databases, ability to manipulate decisions; all these are a preserve of a greatly privileged north.

Of course, these debates have been there for quite some time. Of course African countries have devised a way to ensure they are heard in tables where their opinions should be heard. Of course they have a strategy ahead of CBD COP17 in Yerevan, Armenia.

What is the strategy? What could be different this year? How prepared are they to make a point at the global stage? What are chances they will be heard?

When African countries go to negotiation tables on climate change and conservation, they hold hands and speak in one clear, loud voice, and this will be supremely important at the in Yerevan, Australia. United, they can lobby and achieve a result for Africa, and there is quite a few desires they have at this point.

To this effect, they have the African Group of Negotiators (AGN) on Climate Change, an alliance of the continent's member states that represent the Africa's interests in international climate change negotiations.

What, exactly, will they be hoping to achieve this year?

will crucially explore ways in which communities receive information about key innovations in science for ease of adoption (and to temper unfounded resistance).

Development of these technologies alone is not enough. Finding credible, foolproof communication ecosystems will go along way to ensure that messages land and have an impact in society.

So, what are these ecosystems? Who to drive this charge? Where to start?

seeks to answer some of these questions.

WHAT is the CBD? What will the discussions at COP17 at Yerevan, Armenia πŸ‡¦πŸ‡², look like? What are the key priorities?

The Africa Biennial Biosciences Communication Symposium (ABBC 2027) is just around the corner- precisely, 322 days from today. One blink of an eye and we are in Dakar, Senegal, for this premier gathering of stakeholders in science (and in science communication) acrosshttps://abbcsymposium.org/ the continent.

ABBC provides a platform for advancement of agenda supporting effective communication of biosciences across Africa, and brings together actors who play a key role in ensuring the continent's scientific community, and societies that are beneficiaries of research, have a common understanding, with an aim of reducing hesitance in uptake of key scientific innovations.

Here is what you might need to know about as you prepare to be part of this Symposium: https://abbcsymposium.org/

Mr Daniel Mukubi is confident that with current pace of technological advancement, and an injection of political goodwill, the opacity in access and traceability of genome sequences will be settled.

Africa IS the world's youngest continent. The median age is 19.3 years. In some countries, the median age is actually below 17 years.
In about 24 years,1 in every 4 people on the globe will be African.
However you look at it, Africa needs to aggressively create chances for her vast population of the youth, as she seeks to shield itself from food insecurity, crime, and other socioeconomic-inspired disasters. She needs to sit at tables where the most accomplished global powers discuss the future of the world, and to have her voice heard.

So what is in it for Africa's youth in biosciences? Ahead of the CBD COP17 meeting in Yerevan, Armenia, later in the year, what is in it for these huge swathes of young Africans and the continent's future biodiversity negotiators? See Dr Paul Chege's views here: https://africenter.isaaa.org/news/sbstta-29-what-is-in-it-for-the-youth-and-africas-future-biodiversity-negotiators

Mr Daniel Mukubi of The DRC πŸ‡¨πŸ‡© explains to Dr Godfrey M. Ngure, Ph.D. why, and how, Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) are supremely important in genetic resources and access and benefit sharing, and how his country is making sure their voices are heard loudly and clearly at the CBD COP17, which takes place in Yerevan, Armenia πŸ‡¦πŸ‡², later in the year.
