💚 Matebeleland 💚 🎥 We had the absolute honor of watching at the ongoing NBO Film Festival which among many themes lies the story of Chris, a man navigating grief since he was 22 years old & now in his 60's.

🌍The story is an ode to African storytelling, and is deeply relatable in many ways. One thing that stood out for us, is the unseen societal loads and the weight of responsibility that men carry. Conversations our fathers rarely have the space and opportunity to have and be understood.

🇿🇼 This is marks Zimbabwean debut feature film which features beautiful African scenery and cinematography which she's brilliantly executes working alongside Kenyan 🇰🇪filmmakers, Producer and Editor Jordan Inaan marking his debut feature editing role.

📺 The film is heading to other audiences and film festivals worldwide courtesy of Bigger Motion

💚 We would love to bring this film to our community & give voice and visibility to men's mental health.

🟢 Another film on our watchlist is The People Shall Directed by and Mark Maina.

🎬 NBO film Festival runs from 16-26 October at .nairobi and Kaloleni Social Hall.

💚🇰🇪💚 Our land needs healing 💔. In all honesty we cannot ignore that Kenya has shifted within the last year.

🚨Political tension, uncertainty, abductions, and senseless killings.

😣The youth unemployment rate is currently at 67% and GenZ are at the frontlines in advocating for change. This has morphed into a revolution for and by the people. Inevitably causing our collective mental wellness to be at risk.

🟢We have a Mental Health Toolkit for you which we have available online on whatseatingmyminddotcom which we created in collaboration with LBx Africa.

A resource to seek services during such times, when tension and anxiety come knocking. It offers access to toll free numbers and affordable resources.

🗣Additionally doing any of these or all of our suggestions could help.

↖️Taking a day at a time.

📴Limiting hours scrolling online.
🌿Spending time in nature-walking really helps.

🤝🏾Catch up with family or old friends for a good laugh.

🧠Therapy is an option. If you can't afford it, try talk therapy with trusted loved ones or a support group.

We'd love to hear from you. How are you taking care of your mental wellbeing?

💚Lived Experience💚 The silent battles and people navigating mental health.

🧠The dynamics of mental health are experienced through people.

🫂Today we'd like to appreciate the role that caregivers play within family setups.

🆘️They offer more that support. Sometimes they are left helpless when we experience relapses, navigating antipsychotic medication and fighting silent battles well after hospitalization while the world is busy moving on.

🤝🏽We see you and celebrate you when you nurse us back to experience life through school or work.

💬 With that said, we leave you with a reflective note from one of our caregivers as shared on Eye. "I think the problem with our systems is finding a place where someone is genuinely ready to assist you." Luke Nzangi

💚 Mobile Phone Storytelling Workshops 💚 At MVA, we believe that your voice matters!

📃 Sometimes we struggle to find words to describe how to express our mental health journey's.

🌍 In Africa, mental health is often tied African traditional norms with derogatory words like  "Chizi"Kiswahili for madman used as common practice among many other stereotypes.

📍In our day to day lives, it seems like everywhere you turn, someone has snarky remarks about mental health.

👥 After having deep conversations in our support groups we called members to help them voice their challenges through 1 minute videos. The brief was simple

Who am I?
What happened?
What did I need?
What change am I asking for now ?

💚 Conversations saves lives 💚 Our journey of community screenings continues...from dry riverbeds in Samburu to engaging young people in Laikipia.

🧠It's incredibly difficult to navigate mental health in isolation.

🫂If you or your loved one has ever experienced a mental health crisis, then you know sometimes, how helpless it may feel.

🤝🏾Together with and the incredible youth in their network the film's Impact Producer Chloe of alongside the Impact Lead Noella shared some of their thoughts on Mental health as portrayed in the film What's Eating My Mind.
