OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY-GENERAL

CONGRATULATIONS, AMBASSADOR MARTIN KIMANI

It is with great pride and profound appreciation that I extend my congratulations to Ambassador Martin Kimani on his appointment as Assistant Deputy Secretary General, UN Africa.

This appointment marks an important moment not only in the distinguished career of an accomplished African diplomat, but also in the continuing journey towards a stronger, more confident and more consequential African voice within the multilateral system.

Ambassador Kimani’s diplomatic service has reflected the importance of principled engagement, strategic diplomacy and an unwavering commitment to advancing Africa’s interests and aspirations. His new responsibility therefore comes at a time when the continent’s voice, agency and leadership are increasingly central to shaping the global conversation.

OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

STATEMENT ON THE APPOINTMENT OF AMB. MARTIN KIMANI AS ASSISTANT DEPUTY SECRETARY-GENERAL, UNITED NATIONS – AFRICA

The East Africa Youth Parliament (EAYP) joins the Government and people of Kenya, the East African Community, and the wider African family in conveying its warmest congratulations to Ambassador Martin Kimani on his appointment as Assistant Deputy Secretary-General, United Nations – Africa.

This distinguished appointment is a recognition of the value of African diplomatic leadership and of the important contribution that East Africa continues to make to the multilateral system.

For EAYP, this moment carries particular significance. Africa's place in the international system must be strengthened not only through representation, but through purposeful leadership that advances the continent's interests, amplifies its voice and contributes meaningfully to the search for solutions to the challenges confronting humanity.

We therefore welcome Amb. Kimani's appointment in the spirit of African leadership, multilateral cooperation and shared responsibility. His new responsibility comes at a time when Africa is pursuing deeper regional integration, inclusive economic transformation, sustainable development, peace and security, and greater opportunities for its rapidly growing youthful population.

EAYP believes that the effective participation of young Africans in these processes is indispensable. The continent's demographic reality presents both a profound responsibility and an extraordinary opportunity to ensure that Africa's young people are not merely beneficiaries of development, but active participants in shaping the policies, institutions and partnerships that will define our common future.

As an institution dedicated to youth leadership, democratic participation, ethical governance and East African integration, we recognise the importance of strong African representation within the United Nations and other multilateral institutions.

We are confident that Amb. Kimani will bring to this responsibility the diplomatic experience, regional perspective and commitment to multilateral engagement required to advance constructive dialogue between Africa and the international community.

EAYP further looks forward to continued engagement with African leaders and institutions in advancing the aspirations of Agenda 2063, strengthening regional integration and ensuring that the voice and interests of Africa's young generation remain firmly represented in continental and global affairs.

On behalf of the East Africa Youth Parliament, its leadership, Members and Secretariat, we extend our profound congratulations to Ambassador Martin Kimani and wish him wisdom, strength and success as he undertakes this important responsibility in service to Africa and the international community.

May this appointment mark another meaningful chapter in Africa's continued journey towards a more integrated, peaceful, prosperous and globally influential continent.

Congratulations, Your Excellency.

Burundi is the poorest country in the world!

We must help Burundians, purely from a humanitarian point of view.

The country is really doing badly. You don’t expect a Burundian to come to Kenya to set up a sugar-processing mill or a factory. With what money? The easiest business they could do is tea and mandazi.

The country is dead broke. It is one of the poorest nations in the world. These people are here because they see some hope in Kenya, and they are able to take care of their families while here.

They are here for help! Not for fun.

Burundians should be viewed through a humanitarian lens, not simply as economic competitors or a burden.

Just like we seek help from America and China, Burundi needs help. The West has abandoned it, and Africa wants to abandon them as well.

These are our brothers. Today they might be poor; tomorrow, only God knows. It only takes one discovery of gold or oil, then boom, a country rises.

Of all the East African countries, Kenya has been like a shield to Burundi and should continue on same spirit

My proposal is that even if we are going to stop other foreigners from hawking, please let's allow Burundis only, due to their current condition.

We will create a very bad karma as a country if we chase away those who've come to us for help.
