SOS Children's Villages in Kenya SOS Children's Villages in Kenya: Supporting Children, Families that are at risk.

SOS Children’s Villages Kenya is a child-focused Public Benefit Organization (PBO) established in 1973 to provide care and support to children who have lost or are at risk of losing the care of their biological family. Our vision is “No child should grow up alone” and our programs are driven by the mission of building families for children in need, helping them shape their own futures and to share

in the development of their communities. In this regard, we work to reduce poverty; increase access to quality education and decent work; reduce inequalities and build strong institutions as laid out in SDGs 1, 4, 8, 10 and 16. We do this through programs that are geared towards addressing the political, economic, health and social root causes that lead to high levels of child vulnerability and put families at risk of breaking down. Our programs respond to both the care needs of vulnerable children and the root causes of their situation. They are aligned to the best interests of the child, the needs of the local community, and national and international legal and policy frameworks related to the rights of children, youth and families that we serve. These include the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child; the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child; the UN Guidelines for the Alternative Family Care of Children; the Children’s Act; the Constitution of Kenya; and the National Care Reforms Strategy. Currently we implement programs in five of Kenya’s 47 counties, namely Nairobi, Mombasa, Uasin Gishu, Kisumu and Meru. In the past, we have implemented family strengthening programs in Marsabit, Busia, Homa Bay and Isiolo.

✨ From Rights on Paper to Rights in Action: Building a World Where Every Child Thrives ✨

Children are human beings with rights yet across homes, schools, and communities, these rights are violated daily. Millions of children face:
• Neglect and abuse in families meant to protect them
• Exclusion from education, leaving dreams unfulfilled
• Violence and harmful practices that rob them of safety
• Lack of participation, where their voices go unheard
This year, the World Children’s theme “My Day, My Rights” and “For Every Child, Every Right” reminds us that rights are not privileges. They are entitlements that must be upheld every single day.

At SOS Children’s Villages Kenya, our mission is clear: to build families for children in need, help them shape their own futures, and share in the development of their communities. Our vision is bold: Every child belongs to a family and grows with love, respect, and security.

This means going beyond basic needs. It means:
• Teaching life skills and values to prepare children for independence
• Creating safe spaces where they feel heard and protected
• Advocating for inclusive policies that prioritize child rights
• Empowering families and communities to prevent separation and neglect

💖 Beyond Celebration: Why This Day Matters
World Children’s Day is not just a date on the calendar. It is a global call to:
• Raise awareness about child rights and violations
• Amplify children’s voices in decisions that affect them
• Promote inclusion and equality for every child, everywhere
A Future Built on Rights
When we protect children’s rights, we build a society rooted in justice, compassion, and dignity. Every child who grows up in a loving, secure environment becomes a confident, responsible adult shaping a better world for all.

🤝 The Call to Action
We invite governments, communities, and individuals to join us in:
🌍 Promoting positive parenting and child protection in every home
🧠 Equipping families with knowledge and emotional support
💬 Creating safe spaces for dialogue, healing, and growth
This is more than advocacy — it’s a movement to ensure that every child enjoys every right, every day. Together, we can build a world where children thrive, families are strong, and communities are inclusive.

💙 Join the movement. Speak up. Act now. For every child, every right.

✨ From Rusty Classrooms to a Brighter Future: Kaongo Children Step into Safer Learning Spaces ✨
🚨 The Challenge: Learning in Unsafe Spaces
For years, the youngest learners at St. Peter and Paul Primary School in Kaongo faced daily struggles:

Classrooms made of rusty iron sheets with earthen floors full of insects.
Unsanitary latrines and no handwashing stations, exposing children to preventable diseases.
Limited access to digital skills, with just a handful of computers for the entire school.
Parents and teachers with limited knowledge of child safeguarding.
Education, safety, and wellbeing were all at risk.

🏗 The Transformation: A Holistic Approach
Thanks to the support of SOS Canada and the committed implementation by SOS Children’s Villages Meru, the school has undergone remarkable improvements:

🚰 Modern washrooms & handwashing stations to keep children healthy
💻 Three new computers opening doors to digital skills education
🪑 72 new desks and chairs creating welcoming classrooms and boosting attendance

Laying the Foundation for a New Chapter
Initially, the plan was to renovate the old classrooms. But the dilapidated structures wouldn’t last a few more years. Together, SOS CV Meru and the Board of Management (BOM) decided to build new, permanent classrooms. While the available funding allowed SOS CV to contribute by laying the foundation, the school has taken up the responsibility to complete the construction. This joint effort ensures sustainable, long-term learning spaces for generations of students.

💖 Beyond Infrastructure: Nurturing Safe and Inclusive Spaces
The project also focused on child safeguarding. Parents and teachers received training, creating environments where children feel safe and supported.

Teacher Catherine: “The children are now exposed to digital skills, and their self-confidence has really been boosted.”

Mercy, Department of Health: “The handwashing stations with clear instructions will reduce diseases like diarrhoea and amoeba.”

Franklin Kithinji, Department of Education (Quality Assurance): “The project aligns with the new CBE curriculum, promoting both digital skills and hygiene as core competencies.”

Beatrice, BOM Chairperson, reflected: “We initially planned minor renovations, but SOS CV challenged us to dream bigger. Laying the foundation for new classrooms is a huge step toward permanent, modern facilities. Thank you for helping us dream big!”

🌟 The Impact: Empowering Children to Dream Big
This milestone proves that transforming learning spaces is more than construction—it’s about creating safe, inclusive environments where children can thrive, grow, and reach their full potential.

🤝 Be Part of the Change
SOS Children’s Villages is committed to bringing safe, child-friendly, digitally inclusive schools to more communities across Kenya. Your support can help make this vision a reality!

Raising Stronger Families, One Home at a Time 🌱
In Nyali, Mombasa where families are the heart of community a new chapter in child protection and family strengthening has begun. Twenty passionate trainers have completed an intensive Positive Parenting Training held at SOS Children’s Village Nyali, conducted under the supervision of the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection (State Department for Social Protection and Senior Citizen Affairs), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health – Mombasa County, and in partnership with SOS Children’s Villages Kenya.

The 20 participants,10 from SOS and 10 from the community were paired in twos and assigned to the six sub-counties of Mombasa: Likoni, Mvita, Nyali, Kisauni, Changamwe, and Jomvu to ensure the message of “Malezi bora, si bora malezi” reaches every corner of the county. Each trainer was expected to reach at least 20 participants, meaning each pair would engage 40 parents or caregivers with the potential to reach even more, depending on their capacity.

💡 Why This Training Matters
The trainers noted that through positive parenting, they aim to address critical challenges such as:
Young Care Leavers (YCL)
Family breakdown
Gender-Based Violence (GBV)
Harmful parenting practices

They expressed that this is just the beginning of a journey toward stronger families, safer homes, and brighter futures for children in their communities.

🤝 The Call to Action
We invite community leaders, caregivers, and partners to stand with us in championing the power of positive parenting. Now more than ever, our communities need safe, nurturing environments where children can thrive, and families can grow stronger together.

Let us work hand in hand to:
🌍 Promote positive parenting practices in every home — by encouraging love, empathy, and non-violent discipline, we can break cycles of harm and build homes where children feel safe, valued, and heard.

🧠 Equip families with knowledge and emotional support by sharing tools, resources, and training, we empower parents and caregivers to confidently navigate the challenges of raising children in today’s world.

💬 Create safe spaces for dialogue, healing, and growth by fostering open conversations within families and communities, we can address deep-rooted issues such as trauma, gender-based violence, and harmful parenting norms.

This is more than a program it’s a movement to transform how we raise the next generation. Every child deserves a loving home. Every parent deserves support. And every community has a role to play.

Together, we can build a more compassionate and supportive society one family at a time. 💛

🌊 Waves of Change: Youth Steering Kenya’s Blue Economy into the Future ⚓
In Mombasa, where the ocean meets opportunity, a new tide of ambition is rising. Last week, the Vijana Na Blue Economy Forum (2nd Edition) concluded with a wave of inspiration Kenya’s young people are clearly ready to take the helm.
With thought-provoking panels, success stories, and bold ideas, the forum ended on a powerful note of collaboration and shared purpose. At the heart of the conversations was a bold call to bridge education and industry ensuring that TVETs and universities align their programs with real maritime and ocean economy needs.

We were honoured to have Principal Secretary Fikirini Jacobs from the Department for Youth Affairs and the Creative Economy, Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, officially close the summit.
In his remarks, PS Jacobs shared the government’s commitment to youth employability:
“We want to enhance the employability of the youth in Kenya. Through the NYOTA Project, we are targeting over 100,000 youth for business support, 90,000 for on-the-job experience, and we will also recognize prior learning giving young people with skills and knowledge the certification they deserve. These efforts will ensure that all youth have access to jobs and are employable. They will also be trained on digital skills.”

Walter Odhiambo, National Director, SOS Children’s Villages Kenya, emphasized the value of partnerships that create real opportunities for youth:
“We are proud to be part of this forum. Through such partnerships, young people are given the opportunity to compete equally in their communities and in the job market. We look forward to continued collaboration for the good of our youth.”

From the private sector, Oliver Bunting, CFO Eastern Africa at A.P. Moller Maersk, reinforced this commitment to building bridges between education and industry:
“At Maersk, we believe in creating pathways for young people to thrive within the maritime and logistics sectors. The Blue Economy holds immense potential and when we invest in youth skills, we invest in Kenya’s future.”

This collective effort builds on the existing MoU between SOS Children’s Villages Kenya and the Ministry of Youth Affairs, underscoring a shared vision to equip young people with the skills, confidence, and networks needed to navigate and lead within the blue economy.

🌍 Why This Forum Matters
The blue economy isn’t just an industry it’s a pathway to inclusive growth, dignified work, and sustainable livelihoods. When young people are equipped with the right knowledge, skills, and networks, Kenya’s potential becomes limitless.

🌊 The Call to Action
We invite partners, investors, and change makers to join us in:
🌊 Building youth capacity in maritime and ocean-based careers
💡 Investing in innovation and sustainable blue enterprises
🤝 Strengthening partnerships for inclusive and resilient growth

🌊 Waves of Change: Youth Steering Kenya’s Blue Economy into the Future ⚓

In Mombasa, where the ocean meets opportunity, a new tide of ambition is rising. Day 1 of the Vijana Na Blue Economy Forum (2nd Edition) set a powerful tone under the theme “Unlocking Blue Economy Opportunities.”

At the heart of the conversations was a bold call to bridge education and industry ensuring that TVETs and universities align their programs with real maritime and ocean economy needs. This focus on skills and employability placed young people at the centre of Kenya’s blue growth agenda, marking a significant shift from untapped potential to strategic action.

The forum brought together youth, leaders, and sector experts united by a shared vision: to build a sustainable blue economy driven by innovation, inclusion, and impact. For too long, Kenya’s ocean and coastal wealth has remained underutilized even as its waves hold solutions for unemployment, innovation, and climate resilience. But today, that tide is turning.

Leaders emphasized that youth are not just passengers in this journey—they are the future captains of Kenya’s blue economy. From fisheries and aquaculture to maritime transport and marine conservation, discussions echoed one resounding truth: when education meets opportunity, transformation follows.

Why This Forum Matters
The blue economy isn’t just an industry it’s a pathway to inclusive growth, dignified work, and sustainable livelihoods. When young people are equipped with the right knowledge, skills, and networks, Kenya’s potential becomes limitless.

The Call to Action 🌍
This is the moment to invest in youth, in innovation, and in Kenya’s ocean economy. We invite partners, investors, and changemakers to join us in:

🌊 Building youth capacity in maritime and ocean-based careers
💡 Investing in innovation and sustainable blue enterprises
🤝 Strengthening partnerships for inclusive and resilient growth

The tides are changing, and Kenya’s youth are boldly steering the nation toward a sustainable, prosperous blue future. 🌊✨

Breaking the Silence on Mental Health in Kenya

Behind every statistic is a story—a young person battling anxiety, a parent weighed down by depression, a family grieving in silence. Stigma keeps too many from seeking help, and the treatment gap remains wide.

But change is here. The Nairobi County Mental Health Strategic Action Plan 2025–2030 is a promise to bring care closer to families, schools, and communities.

As SOS Children’s Villages Kenya, we are proud to stand with county leaders and partners to build stronger systems of care.

✨ But here’s the truth: no plan can succeed without all of us.
This is a call for action—for organizations, businesses, and community leaders to come together to make dignified, accessible mental health care a reality.

💌 Partner with us. Let’s break stigma, close the treatment gap, and bring hope to Kenya.

Day 2 – Mind & Motion: A Celebration of Youth, Wellness & Connection ⚽✨
The 2nd Child & Adolescent Mental Health Summit closed in Mombasa after two days of powerful dialogue and action. Centred on the theme “Investing in Young Minds for Accessible, Youth-Led Solutions,” the summit united government leaders, civil society, health experts, and young innovators to place mental health at the core of Kenya’s development agenda. From bold policy commitments to heartfelt youth testimonies, it affirmed that mental wellness is essential for quality education, gender equity, and sustainable growth.

Day 2 unfolded in true Mind & Motion spirit at SOS Children's Villages Kenya, Mombasa. Morning music and laughter set the stage for a day where sport met wellness.

Walter S. Odhiambo, National Director of SOS Children's Villages Kenya, opened with a rallying call to keep mental health central to every partnership and policy.

Then the pitch came alive:

Match 1: KESCA vs Stawisha FC
Match 2: MindSKILLZ Coaches (Male) vs one2one
Ladies Match: MindSKILLZ Coaches (Female) vs one2one

Finals and 3rd-place playoff followed, every goal cheered as a win for resilience and connection.

Alongside the games, Youth Day & Self-care Activities invited participants into team-building games, wellness exercises, and networking circles, proving that community is a vital ingredient in mental wellness.

After a tea break, the MindSKILLZ Showcase demonstrated live how sports-based activities can strengthen mental health skills.

The day ended with an Awards & Closing Ceremony led by Dr. Lilian Otiso, Executive Director of LVCT HEALTH, Dr. Tommy Clark, CEO of Grassroot Soccer, and Walter Odhiambo National Director SOS Children's Villages Kenya, honouring not just match winners but every young person championing mental health.

🏆 Tournament Champions
• Male Champions – Kenya Society of Care Leavers (KESCA), Mombasa Chapter: Stormed through the tournament, defeating Stawisha Pwani in the semis and sealing a 3–0 victory over one2one in the final. When mind and motion meet, stigma falls, and youth thrive. This summit showed that Kenya’s mental health future is brightest when we listen to young voices and act together.
