World Food Programme

World Food Programme 2020 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. WFP is the world’s largest humanitarian agency working towards .

We help crisis-affected people access nutritious food while empowering communities to grow and access food amidst a changing climate. WFP has traditionally provided life-saving relief food to assist vulnerable populations in the ASALs and refugees. However, with the rising frequency and severity of climate shocks, this approach is no longer sustainable. To build long-term resilience, WFP in Kenya

is actively implementing its "changing lives" agenda through diversified and innovative approaches to solutions in close collaboration with the national and county governments and partners. WFP Kenya seeks to provide lifesaving, hunger-reducing and nutrition-sensitive support, integrating the treatment of acute malnutrition with prevention for refugees and in the Arid and Semi-arid lands (ASALs) who are most at risk before, during and in the aftermath of shocks. WFP Kenya has embraced capacity strengthening of national and county systems as the central strategic driver for supporting shock-responsive social protection, safety nets and disaster and climate risk management. WFP in Kenya is in the process of rolling out the differentiated assistance approach to refugee assistance in collaboration with UNHCR and the Department of Refugee Services. This means transitioning from assisting all registered refugee households the same way to one that assists based on needs/vulnerabilities. This shift will ensure beneficiaries receive support tailored to their specific vulnerabilities and needs, ensuring equity, effectiveness, maximizing impact with limited resources, and empowerment. WFP is committed to applying proven approaches that make food systems more climate-resilient, productive, inclusive, equitable, environmentally sustainable, and better able to provide safe, healthy and nutritious diets for all people and communities.

🏄‍♂️In Mombasa when the sun sets over the Indian Ocean and the port quiets, the real work begins.

Under floodlights, forklifts move in rhythm. Trucks roll in and out. Shift after shift, the mission never pauses. 🫷

For WFP Mombasa’s Supply Chain team, the first quarter of the year was a test of endurance-24‑hour operations, overlapping workflows, and relentless pressure to keep food moving where it was needed most. 💙

From sorghum flowing to Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps, to wheat milled into flour for Djibouti, every step mattered. Warehouses ran at full capacity. Port loading never stopped. Standards held firm even at peak pressure.

What made it work was people: warehouse teams, bulk stream operators, millers, port handlers, transporters, and logisticians working across shifts with one shared purpose to keep the humanitarian pipeline moving. 💪

By the numbers:
✅ 860 MT of wheat milled into flour for Djibouti
✅17,000 MT of sorghum dispatched and repositioned
✅ 5,900 MT loaded onto MV Ocean Benefit

This is what it takes to deliver when it matters most.

“Kupika Drive” brought refugees and host communities together, kupitia food, culture na connection. tulikuwa hapo pia, supporting local initiatives and being part of the moment.

Watch how it all went down - teamwork, culture na kicheko mob 😄
Na usikose kuona Head of Office Claudia Ah Poe akikoroga sembe na madigaga! 🍲✨

With support from MOFA-Korea, the World Food Programme is working with the Samburu County Government to rehabilitate the Nontoto Earth Dam spillway. The dam, initially constructed had a damaged spillway, reducing its ability to safely hold enough water for households, livestock, and small-scale irrigation.

Rehabilitation works have commenced, and once completed, the dam is expected to support 15,000 people, sustain 100,000 livestock, and help irrigate 100 acres of land strengthening water security and livelihoods in this region.

The County Government also plans to redesign the dam to increase its capacity to cushion communities to better withstand climate shocks and long dry spells.
