UNODC Eastern Africa Join us to find out how we do it.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has been helping make the world safer from drugs, organized crime, corruption and terrorism in Eastern Africa and around the world.

UNODC is pleased to participate in the 8th Annual General Assembly of the Association of African Anti-Corruption Authorities (AAACA) in Nairobi, held under the theme, “Strengthening cooperation and institutional innovation for an effective fight against corruption in Africa.”

The Assembly brings together anti-corruption leaders from across the continent at a critical moment for strengthening collaboration, sharing experience and advancing practical responses to corruption. At this important forum, UNODC will also showcase its partnership with Kenya's Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) through the European Union in Kenya-funded PLEAD II programme, which is helping to strengthen institutional capacity, inter-agency cooperation and accountability.

We are proud to stand with national and regional partners working to build stronger, more transparent and more resilient institutions in Kenya and across Africa.

Justice Transformed: A Partnership for Kenya's Future

What does meaningful justice reform look like? Our new PLEAD II Impact video has the answer.

In just a few minutes, this short documentary captures the real difference being made across Kenya - from tracing billions in illicitly acquired assets and strengthening institutions, to powering prisons with solar energy and giving thousands of people a genuine second chance at justice.

Behind every statistic is a human story: mothers reunited with their children, young people offered a fresh start, and vulnerable witnesses given the protection they deserve.

This is what partnership delivers. This is what the European Union in Kenya, UNODC Eastern Africa , UNDP Kenya and the Government of Kenya are achieving together.

Today, Kenya marks the National Launch of the Day of the African Child 2026 in Marsabit County - a renewed call to uphold the protection, dignity and rights of every child under the theme: “Ensuring universal access to water, sanitation and hygiene for every child in Africa.”

For children in Probation Hostels, access to safe and adequate sanitation remains critical. Inadequate WASH conditions can undermine health, dignity and rehabilitation.

Through Funded by European Union in Kenya, UNODC Eastern Africa , EU and the Probation KE are exploring biogas solutions as a potential option to help improve sanitation and living conditions in Probation Hostels. This process is intended to assess whether such an approach could contribute to:

✓ Safer and more hygienic sanitation facilities
✓ Improved health and living conditions
✓ Reduced pressure on inadequate sanitation infrastructure
✓ More dignified spaces that support rehabilitation

Exploring sustainable sanitation options is part of a broader commitment to advancing child rights and promoting more humane, rehabilitative justice responses. Any future intervention will be guided by the outcome of the feasibility assessment.

As we commemorate the Day of the African Child come June 16th 2026, we reaffirm the importance of practical, rights-based approaches to advancing WASH for children deprived of liberty.

Rehabilitative justice starts with dignified living conditions.
