Since its inception in the year 2010, Mazingira Challenge is aimed at creating awareness and promoting active participation in environmental issues through a more entertaining and innovative approach. It targets the youth in mainly in institutions of higher learning. The campaign has been possible through her ambassador former Kenya Miss Universities Africa Ms Njari Maina. The competition targets over 200,000 students from over 20 universities and 10 constituent colleges. To the larger youth fraternity, Mazingira Challenge also raises awareness on current and emerging environmental issues.
-Mazingira Challenge is composed of a number of activities that include:
Quiz challenge: This is a question and answer competition testing the knowledge of students in issues of Forestry, Wetlands, Wildlife and Climate Change.
-Mazingira Innovation: This is where students come to exhibit their environmental innovations by showcasing technological solutions to the environment
-Mazingira Save-the-Forests: Universities adopt an area of forest where the winner of the quiz challenge gets to plant trees.
-Mazingira Awards: This will be an award given to the best, active and most green institution of higher learning with exemplary contribution to environment.
