January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month, a time to consider the ongoing issues faced by migrant workers today. At Domestic Workers Returnees of Kenya , we witness how forced labor continues to take advantage of vulnerable workers abroad. Many returnees deal with unpaid wages, abuse, and unsafe working conditions. This shows that trafficking isn’t just a problem from the past; it’s still changing and affecting lives. This month reminds us that protecting workers involves more than just rescue.

We need to provide support that centers on survivors, ensure safe reintegration, and strengthen systems to prevent exploitation before it starts. By listening to survivors, we can create solutions that genuinely make a difference.

Domestic workers play a vital role in homes across the world caring for children, supporting families, and making daily life possible. Yet their labor remains undervalued, under-protected, and often invisible.
On this International Domestic Workers Day, we stand with the countless domestic workers especially those from Kenya who have worked abroad as domestic workers, many under exploitative and unsafe conditions, and returned home with little to no support.
Their stories are a powerful reminder that dignity at work should not be negotiable.
It is time for Kenya to take decisive steps toward protecting these workers by ratifying ILO Convention 189, which promotes decent work for domestic workers, and Convention 190, which addresses violence and harassment in the workplace. These international standards are not symbolic they’re necessary.
Domestic work is real work. Domestic workers deserve recognition, protection, and access to safe reintegration. Let’s move beyond gratitude toward real action.

Representing Domestic Workers Returnees of Kenya with determined dedication and passion, our Executive Director is currently in Abuja, Nigeria, actively participating in the ongoing Annual Meeting of the African Trade Union Migration Network (ATUMNET), taking place from 21–23 May 2025.

At this vital gathering, Sophia stands alongside trade union leaders, partners, and migration advocates from across the continent to champion ethical recruitment, gender-responsive migration governance, and social justice for migrant workers especially women.

Her presence ensures that the voices and experiences of Kenya’s returnee domestic workers are not only heard, but actively shaping the future of labor migration policy across Africa.

From Kenya to Nigeria, our voices are rising for dignity, rights, and justice!

we remember that family is not just about blood. It’s about the people who welcome us back, who stand with us during reintegration, and who walk with us as we rebuild our lives. We are growing communities of returnees who are each other's chosen family lifting each other up, one story at a time.
