Mama Kitchen Garden Rollout — Samburu County

Yesterday, Mama Doing Good joined the State Department for Environment and Climate Change, led by PS Dr. Eng. Festus K. Ng’eno, for discussions on the Mau Forest Complex Integrated Conservation and Livelihood Improvement Programme (MFC-ICLIP).

Through this partnership, 22 hectares of the Mau Forest Complex have been adopted, fenced, and are already undergoing restoration — a significant contribution to the broader rehabilitation of the Mau Forest Complex. In addition, 10 schools have been identified for the Mama Kitchen Garden and Mama Fruit Garden projects to strengthen food security and nutrition for school-going children. The programme is also supporting schools to transition to clean energy through biogas, while approximately 500 women’s table banking groups are being trained and equipped with skills to establish and sustain kitchen gardens that improve household nutrition and livelihoods.

We thank the State Department for their leadership in driving this transformative 10-year programme that connects conservation, clean energy, food security, and women’s empowerment.

Mama Doing Good has successfully concluded a transformative four-day Kitchen Garden Training in Samburu County, where women champions blended knowledge with hands-on practice to establish thriving gardens that will nourish families and strengthen livelihoods.

This training lays the groundwork for the county-wide kitchen garden roll-out on October 2nd. We are grateful for the unwavering support of the Ministry of Agriculture and the County Government of Samburu in making this milestone possible and for walking with us toward the goals of the National MaMa Kitchen Garden Initiative—a healthier, greener, and more food-secure Kenya.

Today, we signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding with Romania’s Contemporary Cultural Identity Association to establish a Kenyan Cultural Centre in Bucharest — the first permanent Kenyan hub in Eastern Europe.

The centre will showcase Kenya’s art, heritage, and craftsmanship, providing opportunities for women artisans and small businesses. It will serve as a space for exhibitions, performances, language and cultural education, and collaborative projects in art, music, and literature. In doing so, it strengthens cultural diplomacy, fosters mutual understanding, and creates bridges in academia, tourism, and business.

At MaMa Doing Good, this partnership reflects our commitment to celebrating Kenyan culture globally while transforming women’s economic opportunities back home. We are grateful to Romania’s Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Gentiana Serbu, for her invaluable support.

Clean cooking is about dignity and safety in the daily lives of every Kenyan family. It means a mother no longer forced to cook in a smoky kitchen that harms her health; a child able to study in the evening without inhaling dangerous fumes; and families saving time and resources, freeing women and youth to pursue education and entrepreneurial opportunities.

Today in Kilifi County, we joined partners to commemorate the Clean Cooking Week 2025 to reflect on milestones achieved and to accelerate our shared ambition of achieving universal access to clean cooking by 2028.

We value the role of the private sector and our development partners in driving innovation and expanding access to clean cooking technologies, while the government continues to create an enabling environment for sustainable progress.
