Third-term assessments are done📚!

Last Friday, 18 September, our team was back in the field for our third-term assessments.

These visits give us a chance to check in on the children we work with, see how their trees are progressing and understand how they are doing in school.

During the visits, we assessed the progress of the trees under each child’s care and used the accumulated tree-care points to guide the education support provided to them.
We were encouraged to see the progress being made, both in the trees and in the young stewards caring for them.

It is a simple idea at the heart of our work: Care for the environment. Stay committed to learning. Grow together. And every term gives us another opportunity to see that idea taking shape in real homes and communities.

A forest can disappear from a map in one colour change, butlt what is lost is much harder to measure.
Habitats. Species. Carbon. Soil. Water systems. Livelihoods.

The latest FAO assessment estimates that 10.9 million hectares of forest were deforested each year between 2015 and 2025. The rate has slowed, which is encouraging, but the scale of continued loss remains significant.

Understanding what forests give us is the first step.
Understanding what we stand to lose is the next.

Let's understand the different types of forest loss.

-Sometimes the forest disappears: Deforestation
-Sometimes it becomes weaker: Degradation
-Sometimes it becomes disconnected: Fragmentation

All three can affect biodiversity, carbon storage, water, soil and the people who depend on forests.

A forest can look like a collection of trees.
But underneath that canopy is an entire system at work.
Forests help regulate water and climate, support biodiversity, provide food and livelihoods, protect soils and strengthen the ecosystems around them.
Their value is therefore much bigger than the land they occupy.
This is what makes forests worth protecting.

Forests are often measured in hectares but an hectare of forest is also habitat.
It can hold countless relationships between plants, animals, insects, fungi and microorganisms, many of which are still poorly understood.

More than 80% of land-based species of animals, plants and insects are found in forests.

So when we talk about protecting forests, we're also talking about protecting the living systems within them.
A forest is not simply where trees grow. It is where life interacts.

Forests cover 31.8% of the world's land.

Yet they continue to face pressure from deforestation, land conversion, degradation and climate-related threats. Global forest area has declined by about 203 million hectares since 1990.

And forests are doing far more than occupying land.

They regulate water cycles, store carbon, support biodiversity, protect soils and provide food and livelihoods for millions of people.

We are therefore turning our attention to forests and biodiversity. Not only to what is being lost, but to what can still be protected, restored and cared for.
