We Are Done Sketching. It’s Time to Build!

In 2018, Big Picture Learning Kenya didn’t start in a boardroom. It began with a simple, hand-drawn sketch of the Kenyan map—a vision of vibrant greens and the resilient spirit of the communities we serve.

For nearly a decade, that sketch has been our home. It carried us through our very first classrooms and the launch of the Kuna Nuru Leadership Academy (KNLA). But as we grow to meet the needs of more students across Nairobi’s informal settlements, our identity is evolving to match our impact.

We are thrilled to announce that this Friday, May 15th, we are officially unveiling the new face of BPL Kenya.

What’s New?

A Complete Rebrand: A visual identity that honors our history while designing our future.

New Website Launch: A refreshed digital space to better share our stories and scale our mission.

Heartfelt Gratitude

This milestone was made possible by those who believed in us from the start. A special thank you to Ian Robinson (UK) and Joe Wickert (BPL Australia). Your unwavering belief in "Kibera Brilliance" helped us transition from the classroom into the world. You didn’t just watch us grow; you helped us weave the threads of this transformation.

Week 2 of Advisory meetings took us into Kawangware, Kangemi, and Kibera. Walking this path alongside young adults in their own communities has been a masterclass in purpose.

The generosity of these young leaders is humbling. By opening their homes, they’ve turned local streets into laboratories for leadership. It’s one thing to talk about change; it’s another to see it ignited on the ground where it’s needed most.

Something special happens when your " Advisory Space " is your own neighborhood.

This week at Kuna Nuru Leadership Academy, we’ve been holding our advisory meet-ups in Kawangware, Kangemi, and Kibera. There is a different kind of fire in a student's eyes when they talk about social impact while standing on the very ground they want to transform.

Walking this path with fellow young adults from the same neighborhood makes the journey feel less like a course and more like a movement. We’re so proud of how our Kenyan communities have embraced the advisory model—making every street corner a place for leadership and growth.

Last week, the world got smaller and a lot more creative! Our BPL Kenya students joined their first online meetup with our sister school, Port of Los Angeles High School (POLAHS), launching our Photography & Storytelling Exchange.
Despite the 10,000 miles between us, being Sister Schools means we share a common DNA of curiosity. What started with 40 strangers quickly became a masterclass in connection, proving that photography is a universal language.

Creative Swaps: Students capture their daily lives specifically for their Pen Pal to see.
Global Dialogue: Real conversations that turn "over there" into "right here."

Mutual Artistry: Celebrating the unique beauty of both San Pedro and Nairobi through each other's eyes.

This isn't just a project; it’s a global family growing together through art. We are so proud of the talent emerging from this sisterhood!

There’s a special kind of magic that happens when a leader stops asking "What should be done?" and starts asking "What can I do with what I love?"

This week, we are officially diving into Level 3 of the Kuna Nuru Leadership journey! This stage is all about moving from awareness to action. Our young adults are stepping into the "Design Phase" of their leadership, where they learn to bridge the gap between community needs and their own unique passions.

By the end of this level, our Fellows will: Identify the Pulse: Describe social issues in their community and the real-human impact those issues have on neighbours. Own the Solution: Articulate exactly how their unique skills can contribute to solving those issues. Design with Passion: Master the "Passion-Based Projects" framework—where interest meets impact. Map the Mission: Outline the concrete steps to take a project from an idea to a reality. Ignite the Spark: Begin brainstorming the specific project that will leave a mark on the community.
