students are now being challenged to think about what makes a good research question. They are conducting small-team research projects on topics such as pollination and territorial behaviour in dik-diks. For many this is the first time they have designed their own project, building confidence and inspiration for their future careers.

Good field science starts with a stimulating question and the right measurements. With expert guidance from savanna ecologist Dr Duncan Kimuyu, students have been investigating how acacia dwelling ants react to fire – a common and important process in savanna ecosystems. These practical exercises are a great way to strengthen analytical judgement.

An exciting beginning
Twenty-four early-career ecologists from 13 African countries have arrived Research Centre. Over the next two weeks they’ll be living and learning in the Kenyan savanna, gaining hands-on experience in field project design. The skills, confidence and networks developed here will launch their future work in ecology and conservation.

Final Excursion – Lake Mburo
We wrapped up the course with an unforgettable visit to Lake Mburo National Park: savannah landscapes, boat rides, and some very charismatic wildlife. After a month in the forest, it was a chance to reflect, relax, and celebrate all that’s been learned and shared. Thank you to our 2025 participants, teachers, and partners for making this such an enriching experience.

Project Presentations – A celebration of impactful field learning:
As our 2025 draws to a close, students are stepping up to present the results of their independent research projects — sharing findings, reflecting on challenges, and learning to communicate science clearly.

It’s truly inspiring to witness the diversity of questions explored, the creativity in approaches, and the remarkable growth in confidence over just a few weeks.

With passionate young scientists like these, the future of conservation is in safe, capable hands
