THE EMERALD WHISPER: WHITE-EARED BARBET

In the misty highlands, the White-eared Barbet (Stactolaema leucotis) greets the morning with rhythmic knocking sounds, carving nest holes into old trunks. Its olive plumage hides it among leaves, but its persistence reveals its presence. Barbets are forest engineers, creating cavities later used by owls, squirrels, and smaller birds. Sadly, selective logging removes the mature trees they depend on. Protecting forest giants and old-growth trees ensures not just the barbet’s survival, but the chorus of life that relies on its craftsmanship.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Crowned lapwings build a shallow ground scrape lined with dry grass for nesting, where the female lays two to three eggs. They choose open areas with good visibility for spotting predators, often near trees for shade. The male and female both defend the nest, and the chicks are precocial, able to run and feed themselves soon after hatching.

THE EMBER OF THE HIGHLANDS: ABYSSINIAN CRIMSONWING ( *Cryptospiza salvadorii* )

This delicate finch glows like a spark amid the cool mists of Kenya’s montane forests. The Abyssinian Crimsonwing is shy, often glimpsed briefly as it darts through dense undergrowth, feeding on seeds and tiny insects. Its presence tells of a healthy, undisturbed forest floor. But as deforestation and climate shifts fragment its habitat, the crimsonwing retreats higher into dwindling patches of green. Protecting montane forests in the Aberdares and Mount Kenya is vital, not only for this glowing bird but for the countless species that depend on the same fragile balance.

KENYA’S ENDEMIC SONGBIRD: HINDE’S BABBLER (ENDANGERED)

Unique to Kenya, Hinde’s Babbler is a cooperative breeder that lives in family groups, singing together in chorus. It is endangered due to habitat destruction in central Kenya. Protecting its grassland and thicket habitats is vital to keep this rare Kenyan song alive.

During the breeding season, male Jackson’s Widowbirds perform dramatic displays, leaping into the air with long trailing tails. These dances are a spectacular sight in Kenya’s grasslands. But overgrazing and land conversion threaten their breeding grounds. Conserving grasslands ensures the survival of this dancer of the plains.

THE ENIGMATIC GIANT: SHOEBILL STORK

Rare and mysterious, the Shoebill Stork stands like a statue in wetlands, waiting patiently for fish. Its enormous, shoe-shaped bill gives it a prehistoric look, making it one of Africa’s most unique birds. It can occasionally be sighted in the marshy edges of Lake Victoria, with Ruma National Park noted as a specific, though infrequent, location for them.

Early mornings (6.00-10.00am) are the best time for sightings. Though rare in Kenya, the shoebill stork symbolizes the richness of wetlands. Protecting swamps and marshes is crucial for the shoebill and countless other species.

THE SILENT CLEANER: WHITE-BACKED VULTURE (ENDANGERED)

Circling high in the skies, the White-backed Vulture is one of nature’s most important cleaners. It feeds on carcasses, preventing the spread of disease and keeping ecosystems healthy.

But poisoning, habitat loss, and declining food sources have made vultures critically endangered in Kenya. Protecting them requires strict action against poisoning and stronger conservation programs. Losing vultures would mean losing nature’s sanitation service.
