Today, on Labour Day, we reflect on the importance of “Ensuring a Healthy Psychosocial Working Environment.”

Action Network for the Disabled recognize that work is more than just productivity, it is about people, dignity, and well-being. A safe and supportive psychosocial environment empowers individuals, especially persons with disabilities, to thrive, contribute meaningfully, and feel valued.

Let us commit to building spaces where mental health is prioritized, inclusion is practiced, and every worker is respected and supported. Because a healthy workplace is not a privilege, it is a right.

Established in 2015, this inspiring Parent Support Group brings together 18 caregivers of children with disabilities who are turning challenges into opportunities. Through beadwork, tailoring, detergent making, table banking, savings, and lending, the group has built not just income, but unity, resilience, and hope.

Through the Future Bora Project, members have strengthened their entrepreneurship skills, improved how they package and market their products, and learned better ways to manage and grow their businesses. Leadership training has also helped the group strengthen their internal systems, ensuring fairness, accountability, and improved loan management.

Beyond business skills, psychosocial support sessions have restored hope among caregivers who previously faced isolation and stigma. Today, members speak of renewed strength, healing, and a strong support system within the group.

With a Ksh 30,000 grant in Year One, the group invested in a stall which is now rented out, generating steady monthly income. This income feeds into a revolving fund that supports member loans and repayments, building long-term financial sustainability.

Paulo’s Group continues to grow with gratitude to Action Network for the Disabled (ANDY), proving that with the right support, caregivers can build lasting economic empowerment and brighter futures for their families.

Action Network for the Disabled conducted a training session on Child Development and Inclusive Play for caregivers of children with disabilities. The session focused on key areas such as maternal nutrition, communication, and the importance of inclusive play in supporting children’s growth and development.

Caregivers were also provided with practical guidance on nurturing independence by teaching children essential daily skills like bathing, toileting, and personal care, reminding us all that it’s not about perfection, but participation.

The session created a safe and supportive space where caregivers openly shared their experiences, challenges, and journeys of resilience. Many highlighted how peer support has helped them find hope and strength along the way.

We also engaged in important conversations around inclusive cultural practices, including rites of passage such as circumcision and marriage.

Together, we continue to empower caregivers and promote inclusive environments where every child can thrive.

Many caregivers of children with disabili ties take on full-time caregiving roles out of love and concern often because they feel others may not fully understand or support their children’s needs. While this commitment is admirable, it can sometimes lead to isolation, stress, and burnout.

Through four recent sessions held in Dandora, Dagoretti, Kibera, and Kasarani, caregivers came together in safe, supportive spaces to share their lived experiences. These conversations revealed both the challenges and the strength within this community. With guidance from counsellors, caregivers explored practical ways to support their mental well-being, manage stress, and avoid burnout.

A key message that emerged is that raising a child with a disability should not be a journey taken alone. Caregivers were encouraged to involve their communities educating neighbors about their children’s needs, including aspects like diet (especially for children with autism), communication, and daily care. Building this understanding helps create a supportive environment where children are cared for collectively, even in the caregiver’s absence.

Another important discussion focused on growth and life transitions. Children with disabilities grow just like any other child from childhood to adolescence and adulthood. This raises important questions around rites of passage, such as circumcision for boys and marriage for both genders, and how families and communities can approach these milestones with dignity, inclusion, and cultural sensitivity.

Together, these sessions are a reminder: caregiving is stronger when communities are informed, inclusive, and supportive.

On 14th April, Action Network for the Disabled ANDY brought together 60 caregivers of children with disabilities from Kasarani for a powerful and honest conversation on mental well-being. đź’™

The session created a safe space where caregivers could openly share their lived realities, many spoke about isolation, having no time for friendships, limited work opportunities due to full-time caregiving, and even challenges in forming relationships because of stigma. These voices reminded us that caregiving, while rooted in love, can often come with silent struggles.

Key expectations from the session included:
• Learning how to access essential resources such as medication and support services
• Understanding how to support children transitioning into adulthood
• Managing mental health as caregivers
• Practicing self-acceptance
• Balancing caregiving responsibilities with personal life

We explored the importance of both physical and mental well-being, emphasizing that good mental health enables self-love and better decision-making.

Caregivers also identified common signs of stress:
• Forgetfulness
• Speaking loudly or irritability
• Overeating
• Withdrawal and isolation
• In some cases, harmful reactions like lashing out

The discussion highlighted critical challenges caregivers face, including neglect, stigma, and discrimination from society.

One powerful takeaway was the need to break isolation. Caregivers were encouraged to create awareness within their communities, starting with neighbors, about their children and their realities. Building understanding can foster acceptance and reduce stigma.

Mental well-being is not a luxury, it is a necessity. Supporting caregivers means strengthening families and building inclusive communities.

Caregiving for persons with disabilities presents significant challenges, particularly as an increasing number of children with disabilities are being raised by single parents—most often mothers. One caregiver shared her experience raising a 15-year-old child with both autism and hearing impairment. While the child progressed through primary education without major difficulties, significant barriers emerged at the secondary school level. Several schools where the child was enrolled lacked adequately trained teachers and appropriate support systems to meet her specific needs. As a result, the child is currently out of school and remains at home.

This situation raises critical concerns regarding inclusive education. What measures has the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Kenya Institute of Special Education, put in place to ensure that learners with diverse disabilities are supported effectively within secondary schools?
