๐ฟ๐ Happy International Day for Biological Diversity! ๐๐ฟ
22 May 2026
Theme: โHarmony with nature and sustainable developmentโ
Today we join the global community in celebrating the incredible diversity of life that sustains our planet โ from coastal ecosystems and coral reefs to mangroves, seagrasses, and open ocean biodiversity.
In the Western Indian Ocean, this diversity is at the heart of the work of the Nairobi Convention, which continues to support countries in protecting marine and coastal ecosystems through regional cooperation, science-based decision-making, and sustainable ocean governance.
This yearโs celebration comes as we also convene an important webinar under the Nairobi Convention, focusing on strengthening regional collaboration and advancing shared solutions for ocean sustainability. The discussion reinforces the urgency of translating global biodiversity commitments into practical action at national and regional levels.
As biodiversity faces increasing pressure from climate change, pollution, and unsustainable use, initiatives under the Nairobi Convention remain critical in supporting Marine Protected Areas, improving enforcement, and restoring degraded ecosystems across the region.
Letโs continue working together to protect the natural systems that sustain livelihoods, economies, and future generations.
