SeedballsKenya We are pioneering a wonderful method of low cost afforestation in Africa using SeedBalls! Kenya.

Seedballs Kenya has pioneered a method of mass producing seedballs for low cost and efficient reintroduction of trees and grass species into degraded areas in Africa. Indigenous tree seeds in a protective capsule of charcoal dust + nutritious binders. We like the idea of scattering them from aircraft, but getting them out there by car, bike or by hand will do just fine & they'll patiently wait for

the next rainy season before sprouting. Species include nine types of acacia seeds, three types of native dryland grasses and a selection of more than 6 other types of indigenous Kenyan trees. Brought to a deforested area near you by Cookswell Jikos and Chardust Ltd.

Amazing to see the regeneration on these Sesbana livestock forage demo rows planted with seedballs at the UoN Vetlabs KATIC Center.

These were pruned in March and this is the re-growth to date.

Note that the row on the far left side was planted with 5kgs of biochar and the first harvest yield was appx 15% increase wood and leaf matter compared to the control.

This tree is a wonderful indigenous Kenyan replacement to Luceana or Calliandra often seen in NGO agroforestry systems, read more about its multiple uses in this Daily Nation article https://nation.africa/kenya/business/seeds-of-gold/grow-sesbania-for-good-soil-fertility-fodder-and-medicine-309928

Acacia elatior is a drought-adapted East African savanna tree commonly associated with dry river systems and rangelands. Like many members of the Fabaceae, it forms symbiotic associations with nitrogen-fixing bacteria, allowing it to persist and establish in relatively nutrient-poor soils.

The species is also notable for its role in dryland browsing systems. Its foliage and pods are utilized by both wildlife and livestock, particularly during dry periods when herbaceous forage declines. Despite this, its defensive thorn structure reduces overbrowsing pressure and likely contributes to its persistence in heavily grazed landscapes.

In many semi-arid systems, species like V. elatior function less as โ€œforest treesโ€ and more as long-term stabilizers of ecological function under chronic disturbance and water limitation.
