We aim to accord every orphan and vulnerable child a healthy and safe childhood with an overall goal of breaking the cycle of poverty and building brighter futures. The school is currently educating children between the ages of 4 and 17 in primary school classes ranging from baby class to standard (grade) 8. Weekdays at the Agape are occupied by school activities, as the children arrive at school
at 7 in the morning and leave around 4:30 in the afternoon. Once the boarders return to the orphanage, they complete their homework assignments, assist with chores, and unwind by playing games (especially football) and socializing with their brothers and sisters. Every night, the children sit together to eat dinner around a fire and discuss their day, tell jokes, and sing. Weekends at the orphanage are used principally for recreation and special programs. Occasionally, volunteers come from other organizations to lead activities such as group games and face painting and to cook for the children. The Slum Drummers of Waithaka will soon begin a program teaching the children to express themselves through music. On Saturday night, the children assemble inside the dormitory to play drums, sing, tell stories, and pray together. On Sundays, the children take part in a church service led by Oliver and Maggie (and sometimes visitors). These interactive services involve sharing of testimonies, learning and recitation of Bible verses, creating and introducing new songs to the group and prayer. While the staff do all they can to provide for these children, the vision of Agape Hope Centre is only feasible with the support of sponsors who understand that children, including those who are most vulnerable, are the future leaders of their communities and require a positive environment to develop into responsible and principled adults. As much expense is incurred in the provision of shelter, security, food, clothing, education, and medical care, the needs of the centre are great. Agape also hopes to initiate some income-generating activities to meet its operational expenses. One proposed initiative is a poshomill service, whereby the centre can mill corn into flour to sell in the community. The Centre also hopes to construct a greenhouse for the growth of produce for consumption and sale. In addition to welcoming monetary and supply donations, Agape Hope Centre welcomes volunteers, from both the local and international communities. If you are interested in supporting the work of Agape Hope Centre, Oliver and Maggie would be happy to provide more information or references and make arrangements to implement your proposed contribution.
