Why have out-of-school numbers suddenly increased?

272 million children and youth were out of school in 2023. That's 21 million more than previously estimated.

Data from the UNESCO Institute for Statistics and the GEM Report Unesco shows two main drivers for this increase:

1️⃣ Insufficient progress to enroll children in school
2️⃣ Updated global population estimates
