For Lenah, it did.

What started as a passion for candle making became an opportunity to build a livelihood through the support of Back to Basics (BTB)’s Livelihoods & Enterprise Development Program.

Through training, mentorship, and enterprise development support, Lenah strengthened her skills, built her confidence, and took important steps toward turning her craft into a source of income.

The journey was not without challenges. Like many entrepreneurs, she faced setbacks, uncertainty, and moments that tested her determination. But through continuous learning, persistence, and support, she kept moving forward.

With additional livelihood support, Lenah was able to improve her production, explore new product designs, and expand her customer reach.

Today, her enterprise is helping her create income, strengthen her resilience, and build a more sustainable future for herself and her family.

Her story is a reminder that when communities are equipped with the right skills, opportunities, and support, small beginnings can grow into lasting change.

What if wellness, comfort, and dignity could be brought directly to someone's doorstep? For Kendi, this question became the inspiration behind DIGNICARE Home Support & Wellness, an initiative launched through the support and empowerment of Back to Basics (BTB).

Driven by a passion for serving others, Kendi transformed her vision into a personalized home support and wellness service that brings care, companionship, and comfort to individuals in the familiar surroundings of their own homes. Through DIGNICARE, clients receive services such as manicure and pedicure wellness visits, companionship and emotional support, reflexology sessions, relaxation massage, foot baths, and foot care. More than just a service, DIGNICARE offers a holistic approach that nurtures both physical wellness and emotional well-being, ensuring that every client is treated with dignity, respect, and compassion.

At the heart of DIGNICARE is the belief that health, environment, and quality of life are deeply connected. Through BTB’s empowerment framework, Kendi embraced the understanding that wellness goes beyond physical care—it is also influenced by the environment in which people live and the support they receive. By integrating these values into her work, she creates safe, nurturing spaces where individuals feel valued, supported, and empowered to live healthier and more fulfilling lives.

To help bring this vision to life, BTB provided Kendi with essential equipment to establish her home support and wellness services. This practical support enabled her to take the first steps toward building a sustainable livelihood while addressing important wellness needs within her community.

Today, DIGNICARE Home Support & Wellness stands as a powerful example of how empowerment can create lasting impact. Kendi’s journey demonstrates that when individuals are equipped with the right skills, resources, and opportunities, they can transform not only their own lives but also the lives of those around them. Through her work, she continues to bring care, comfort, confidence, and dignity to every home she serves.

Economic empowerment begins with access to skills, opportunities, and the resources needed to turn ideas into sustainable sources of income.

Through the Back To Basics Empowerment Program, women are supported to develop practical, hands-on skills that enhance their livelihoods while building confidence, creativity, and financial independence.

Recently, women participating in the program received crocheting materials through our revolving fund, enabling them to learn, practice, and create quality handmade products that can generate income. More than just a craft, crocheting is a valuable but often forgotten skill that offers both economic and personal benefits.

As women develop their crocheting skills, they gain opportunities to earn an income while also enjoying the therapeutic benefits of the craft. Crocheting can help reduce stress, improve focus and concentration, encourage mindfulness, and promote overall mental well-being. Learning and creating together also strengthens social connections and fosters a supportive community environment.

This initiative is part of our HEAL (Health, Environment and Livelihoods) Program, which is built on the understanding that health, environmental sustainability, and economic well-being cannot be addressed in isolation. Strong livelihoods contribute to better health outcomes, healthy communities are more productive, and sustainable environmental practices support long-term economic resilience. These three pillars are deeply interconnected and essential for thriving communities.

Through practical skills development, access to resources, and sustainable support mechanisms such as our revolving fund, we continue to empower women to unlock their potential, strengthen their resilience, and create lasting positive change for themselves, their families, and their communities.

At Back To Basics, our Eco-Basics Tours offer an authentic opportunity to connect with local culture, nature, and sustainable rural living. Through immersive experiences, participants explore environmental conservation, biodiversity, indigenous foods, and community-led sustainability practices while contributing to local development.
By participating in our homestay tours, you support community conservation efforts and environmental restoration initiatives, gain a deeper understanding of rural life and indigenous knowledge, and engage in meaningful hands-on activities that benefit both nature and local communities.

World Environment Day 2026 | Back To Basics - Global Call for climate action

Today, Back To Basics joined the global community in commemorating World Environment Day 2026 by bringing women together for a day of shared learning, practical farming activities, and meaningful conversations on sustainable farming practices that strengthen both livelihoods and environmental stewardship.

As women living and working in urban communities, participants explored the vital connection between climate resilience, food security, environmental conservation, and sustainable livelihoods. Through discussions on urban farming, agroforestry, tree growing, and climate-smart practices, they demonstrated that meaningful environmental stewardship is not limited to rural areas. From transforming small spaces into productive gardens to planting trees and adopting sustainable practices, these women are helping build greener, healthier, and more resilient urban communities.

A special highlight of the day was the tree planting to mark World Environment Day. This simple yet powerful act symbolizes hope, resilience, and our shared commitment to a greener future. Every tree planted contributes to healthier ecosystems, cleaner air, and stronger communities capable of adapting to climate challenges.

The day also showcased how sustainable farming can support household nutrition, generate income, and promote environmental sustainability. By learning from one another and sharing experiences, participants strengthened their knowledge of climate-smart practices while building stronger community connections.

At Back To Basics, we believe that meaningful climate action begins with empowered communities taking practical steps where they live and work. Today, we celebrated not only the environment, but also the power of women, collaboration, and community-led solutions in creating lasting change.

Tomorrow is the Day!

As the world commemorates World Environment Day 2026, KEPRO in partnership with the Nairobi City County Government, is proud to bring together communities, businesses, institutions, faith-based organisations, waste workers, and environmental champions for the Sustainable Waste Management Walk & Recycling Collection Station Launch under the theme:

"Climate Action Through Sustainable Waste Management."

This initiative seeks to raise awareness on responsible waste disposal, waste segregation at source, recycling, and the critical role that communities, government, industry, and waste workers play in protecting the environment and advancing Kenya's circular economy.

We invite all KEPRO members, partners, sponsors, stakeholders, media, and the public to join us for this important event.
