At Back To Basics Kenya , bamboo is transformed into beautiful, useful bags. Discarded plastics become artwork. Old yarns are reimagined into climate-action bags. What may seem like waste becomes a product, a skill, an opportunity—and a source of livelihood.

Through creativity and the circular economy, women and youth are not only creating products; they are creating opportunities to earn, learn, build confidence,improve mindset and see their potential differently.

A cleaner community starts with how we choose to manage what we call waste.

At Back to Basics (BTB), our Circular Economy Solutions pillar explores how materials can be given a second life through reuse, recycling, upcycling, and creative transformation.

Because what we throw away doesn't always have to be waste. It can become a resource, a useful product, or an opportunity for skills, livelihoods, and innovation.

This World Cleanup Day, we are calling on communities to move beyond simply cleaning up — and to rethink what happens to what we collect.

Reduce what you can. Reuse what is still useful. Separate what can be recovered. Recycle what can be recycled. And support solutions that keep materials in use for longer.

She carries more than what is in her hands.

She carries a livelihood. A family’s needs. A cleaner community. And the determination to build something better.

She is one of the waste pickers supported by Back to Basics, turning what others discard into value and opportunity.

Through BTB’s Circular Economy Solutions, women waste pickers are gaining skills, strengthening their livelihoods and finding new possibilities in materials that are often overlooked.

Because waste is not always the end of something.
Sometimes, it is the beginning of something new.

She isn’t just carrying waste.
