The annual Camp Toyoyo, USA - Kenya Tournament is just a week away. This year’s edition will take place over the Memorial Weekend instead of the traditional July 4th Independence celebrations.
One of the major highlights of the tournament will be a special curtain-raiser testimonial match held in honor of two iconic figures in Kenyan football and youth empowerment — MYSA founder the late Bob “Maina” Munro and the late Austin “Makamu” Oduor.
*1987*
Coincidentally, both men made history in the memorable year of 1987.
That was the year Gor Mahia became the first and only East African club to win a continental title — the African Cup Winners’ Cup, famously known as the Mandela Cup. Makamu, the legendary defender for both club and country, captained Gor Mahia to that historic triumph. He later represented Kenya at the 1988 AFCON and was part of the Harambee Stars generation that qualified for three consecutive AFCON tournaments. As part of the dorminant K'Ogalo side in the 1980s, Austin won 6 Kenyan Premier League titles with Gor Mahia and 3 CECAFA Club Championships.
Makamu sadly passed away on October 16, 2024, leaving behind unforgettable memories and a lasting footprint in Kenyan football. His legacy continues through many lives he inspired, including his son Arnold Origi-former Harambee Stars goalkeeper.
1987 was also the year Bob Munro founded MYSA (Mathare Youth Sports Association), an initiative that would not only give birth to Mathare United, Mathare Youth, and Mathare United Women, but also transform countless lives across Kenya’s informal settlements through sports and community development.
A Canadian by birth but Kenyan at heart, Bob dedicated his life to empowering young people through football, education, leadership, and social responsibility. Today, MYSA boasts over 140,000 alumni spread across Kenya and the world, many excelling in sectors far beyond football.
Sadly, Bob left us on January 19, 2025, but his legacy remains deeply alive among us.
This year’s tournament will therefore not only celebrate football, but also honor two men whose impact transcended the game and changed generations forever.
To celebrate the two gentlemen, we have organized former Gor Mahia players and die hard fans to play against MYSA alumni in the testimonial match. If you are in the USA, come join us in Dallas for this wonderful extravanganza.
